[QLD] Anko 7-Cup Rice Cooker $10 (in-Store only) @ Kmart Sunnybank

410

Maybe an older model than this one. On clearance, Kmart app barcode scanner does not work with barcode, but scans for $10 in store.

Could be on clearance in other stores?

Love rice.

I wouldn't recommend this unit. I've had one of these have the electronics inside blow up on me (I was able to take it back). Getting a rice cooker is worth it regardless because in general it's a simple and elegant design. But, getting a good rice cooker (Cuckoo / Tiger) is worth it too as it can last you 30+ years and that's a saving over time.

    • +2

Wouldn't recommend this either but there's others that are good if the upfront price demanded by Cuckoo and Tiger is a bit high for some people.

The Rice Box is one such example at $119 or others around this calibre - has 13.2% cashback at SB with Westpac/St George card today too.

Second getting a good rice cooker. I've been using the instant pot to cook rice recently, but it's no where close to rice from a proper rice cooker. Waiting for the new Zojirushi induction rice cooker to come out.

      • +3

We brought a 220-230V zojirushi home as carry on luggage from our trip to Japan and oh man, the cook4me pressure cooker and decor microwave cooker just dont compare at all. Its so good I keep trying to find new recipies with rice as an excuse to keep using it!

Cost me $180 or so from BIC camera, same model is $370 to buy here. Best purchase ever. Its not the fanciest model but ill be damned if it still doesnt make the most perfect rice.

    • How do the better rice cookers go with starchy rice. I bought a10 kg bag that my cheap rice cooker can't cook, it's so starchy that it starts layering with the water at the top, so the bottom of the rice cooker heats up and turns off halfway through the process.

Rice pudding was my favourite as a kid. I didn't understand it was poverty food, I just liked to eat it.

Are you washing your rice at least 3 times before cooking it?

        • Yep, washed the rice for at least a minute, I think I just bought a bad batch of rice, never had trouble previously with jasmine rice.

          • @Fudgie the whale: Wash rice with hands till water run clear
I recommend pushing a 1 cup rice to 1-1.2 cup water ratio.
A better rice cooker significantly helps in getting rice that doesnt clump together bc you can use less water.

Another trick is to let the rice soak in the 1:1 water ratio for 20mins before cooking.

      • Just wash your rice first until the water runs clear

In NSW also - I got one last night, along with some clearance milk and made rice pudding in it this morning. Paid for itself at this point.

    • Lol nice

    • Damn son

    • I have one of these and its shoite. Swollen mass half baked after 15mins, then a period of warming into glued discus for 10mins.
Hadn't tried making rice pud tho, will give it a go before I frisbee the cooker.

We grabbed one of these at the start of the year. Have used it 3 times and it won't work on the forth attempt. Cooks for a random time of about 5-10mins then stops cooking (goes to Warm mode) i think it just gets too hot. Try turn it back on and it last 30 seconds before going back to Warm. Saw them in my local Kmart Helensvale just now and they were also on clearance for $10. There is a $65 from Anko that I was thinking of grabbing, will check the reviews out.

No one in Sunnybank has a rice cooker that small

    • +2

Haha came here for comments on Sunnybank ;) More like no one in Sunnybank wants rice cookers that doesn’t sing Kelly Clarkson.

      • you need a paten on a Kelly Clarkson karaoke rice cooker

  • +4

I'm shocked at all the comments from people saying these units aren't worth it.
Myself and a few friends have used one of these cheapies hundreds of times without issue and afaik the electronics in these and anything below about $200 is extremely simple.. Has the quality really got that bad on such a simple item? :(

    • -1

      hundreds of times

yet we still use our electric high pressure cooker from 15+ years ago. We never had to buy 100+ times.

    • I mean I'm sure you could use something a hundred times fine but it only takes once of not fine for that to be what you remember, especially if its left unattended.

Had a Kogan rice cooker that was fine up until it started melting. I don't trust cheap electronics now.

    • Mine's been rock solid too, cooked plenty of rice and other meals in it without issue for years. It's hard to justify spending $100+ on a rice cooker when something this cheap does the job (esp cooking for 1).

Sold out in 20min well done Sunnybank

I wonder if someone in the warehouse said, we've got a couple of pallets of last year's model rice cookers, where should we send them?…. looks up sales records = Sunnybank… gone

  • +1

I saw 2 people returning these at Kmart earlier today.

  • I am Asian myself. I much prefer cook rice using high pressure cookers, taste better.

  • +1

this is the most garbage rice cooker I've ever used, always burns the rice on the bottom if you let it sit on warm.

  • In Greensborough Vic also

  • +1

Nobody in Sunnybank needs another rice cooker….

  • Fire sale

My experience with this rice cooker has been great. It makes basmati rice well, and I also use it for curries and soups. Going strong 2 years on

  • +3

For the price, its a decent unit. I have one from 2 years ago. Still using it to this day. Probably use it 3-4 times a week.

  • +1

Bought one of these many years ago, broke after 1 use.

    • +1

Only use to cook rice not throw at someone, didn’t you read instructions this not a weapon….

  • +6

ive been using this one for 11+ years, no issues so far. although the bottom can get burnt and stuck on but hey it's $10

  • -2

dang it, i just overpaid for a cuckoo rice cooker. i could have gotten this for so much cheaper.

  • +2

Anko is Japanese for "kerbside collection"

  • I cant image it cooks rice 250% better than other digital rice cookers.

  • I had this one but it exploded one day, heard a loud pop and saw black marks on the inside. Probably only used it maybe 20 times too. Bought a Panasonic 5 cup rice cooker off amazon for $109 to replace it, highly recommend.
