Need a New Medium SUV under $100k

Help me find a medium suv. Medium suv is 5-seater family car and 4.6-4.7m length max.

My criteria is:
Has to retain its value somewhat.
Has to be economic of fuel, I don’t want too many trips to station. I can’t see the value in phev, extra $20k would never break even, so thats a no.
I am thinking of lexus nx or rx,
Or mercedes benz glc, but this is not hybrid.
Or bmw x3.

Keen to try ev, but fearful of the price plummet to nothing in just a few years.
I don’t have solar panel.

I don’t mind used cars 1-2 yo.

Preferably not Chinese made cars.

            • @811b11e8: NGL this got a chuckle from me.

Taking failing upwards to new levels.

          • @Frankensnore:

Tesla for example is said to lose 50% in one year.

Whoever told you this nonsense, it would be wise to take whatever else they say with a grain of salt. You can fact check this yourself on carsales.com.au. Will take you 5 mins tops.

            • @vorsprung: Carsales shows seller's advertised/aspirational prices but not actuals. Or is there some data/reporting function I'm not aware of? Here's a link to the full year 2023 Automotive Insights Report (AIR), an industry report which is released per calendar month

    • I don't get the appeal of these. Are they just for people who hate Elon Musk?

Telsa seems better: it has a far better ecosystem, a far better charger network, far better aftermarket support, a better warranty, and similar money.

Polestar also felt cramped on the inside. It's like Volvo/Polestar forgot they didn't have a transmission and driveshaft when designing the interior.

      • Yes I drove a Polestar on a rental weekend and the leg well felt cramped AF. Why is it so small!

        • It’s not a pure EV platform - at least some of them. Think ICE body with batteries.

      • I hired a Polestar 2 for a weekend and was amazed how they managed to make the car so small on the inside. The center console is ridiculous and makes the car feel so cramped. The bonnet is enormous, like they're hiding a full size ICE in there.

Polestar sales are woeful. Just 53,000 sold, worldwide. During that time the Tesla 3/Y sold 1.7 million. Polestar is a dying brand.

  • I have a GLC and the leg room at the back is not great, especially if you have kids. It's about the legroom of those economy flights, bit of a PITA to put them in their front facing seats (no chance if you want rear facing lol), my husband is 190cm and always has to move his seat front to put my son in his seat.

Our Kluger is very roomy in comparison, excellent leg room. Maybe due to its cheaper price compared to your options, it makes up for the fuel economy. I've had no issues with the car for the past 5 years. I really like the look of the new Klugers too.

In terms of family and comfort, Alphard and Kia Carnival. I saw an Alphard for sale and the seats look like those recliners at the movies

    • I like alphard but i think insurance will be expensive…

    bmw x3 - either the 20d or 30d.

    • or a XD3

      • that wont be under $100k

A 2014 camry and $90,000 in gold bullion

Just to be different, Ford Ranger Wildtrack or Platinum. Good on retaining value if you keep it well kept, good on fuel, ticks most of your boxes, 5 or 7 seater, can tow and doesn't have the I am a fancy prick written all over it like a Lexus or BMW does.

    • Everest?

      • -1

Missus thinks it’s too dam big and thirsty

        • +2

And a Mercedes Benz GLC isn't big?

        • +21

it’s too dam big and thirsty

Then buy her a $25,000 fuel card with the change you get from your $100,000.

I dont get how people can buy a $100,000 car and then complain how it's "thirsty". You are going to put $2~$3,000 worth of fuel through it in a year, but are going to lose $20,000 in depreciation in that same time… But yeah… "fuel prices…" amirite??"

      • +1

Yes, sorry, miss edit. I meant Everest.

    • But the stipulation was that it had to have the street cred. After all, it’s important what other people think of us by looking at our car…

Bmw ix3 on 3yr novated lease.

It will hold its value well over the 3 years and assuming you on on the highest tax bracket will came out well ahead of owning an ice car.

    • -1

      Is ix3 ev?

      Will look into it

  • +1

compare the options on toyota.com and pick your favourite one.

  • I'm in the same boat and looking at NX350h, probably 1-2yrs old. Although they're almost the same price as new due to the wait times.

I don't really like the road noise from the run flats but there's no perfect car.

    Jaguar E-PACE P250 R-Dynamic HSE

What are you doing on OzBargain? You obviously don't want a bargain.

  • +4

Lol. If you really cared about your family, you would spend 200k. And get an EV so you dont have to stand around at the servo with the plebs . I would go the Porsche Taycan for the significant anchor-with- a- capital -"W" factor.

    • -1

      Would love that

      • Then step up. You did say you have money and are old and only live once etc.

  • A XD3 would be one which is fun , economic with a reasonable depreciation curve

Of course it is. No one is this stupid in real life.

      … wait a minute

  • A demo or used 2023/4 RX350H. Should be just under 100K. Kluger or a RAV4 would be the sensible choice…

    • -2

Kluger is quite nice but too big.

      • +1

You know what definitely isn't too big?

  • Why do you feel you need to spend $100k on a car to have luxury?

    • +2

      Self flagellation.

  • +2

You can get the top of the line of any "normal" medium SUV for $100k, instead of paying a premium for Merc/BMW/Audi badging and only minor improvements. I'd say get a Skoda, because the styling is less bland than most medium SUVs. I drove the Kodiaq for a while recently. Lots of neat little luxury features, but still a sensible car and good on fuel.

You can spend the money left over to spec out even better tyres and custom finishes, and pre-pay for detailing every week for a couple years. Having a car that's showroom clean every week? That's real luxury.

    • +1 for the Kodiaq.

  • Be aware that technology and economics in the next few years will disrupt personal transport. If you want to retain value - don’t buy an expensive car of any kind unless you are pretty sure it’s going to become a collectors item.
ICE cars are going to be dropping in popularity as EVs become the key market (except for special purpose vehicles - tow vehicles etc)
EVs are likely to lose value as tech will change pretty fast and batteries keep getting cheaper.
The suburban second family car is likely to become less common - flooding the secondhand ICE market.

FWIW I’d just buy something I really liked or stick with cheap and cheerful. Spend what you’re happy to p@ss against the wall…👍

  • +4

    It's 2024.
Just get a Model Y (best selling car globally 2023, proven, tested, ultimate family car, drive for free if you have solar on your roof), or a Kia EV9, or Polestar 4…
There are several other good Chinese options.

You can rent most of those for weekend on https://www.evee.com.au/

    • +6

They are very decent. But for the love of cars GIVE ME SOME BUTTONS. Making everything touch screen only is such a horrid experience.

      • Yep, a car without buttons for regular functions is a deal-breaker.

      • -2

They will soon replace the steering "wheel" with a press screen button type. Like you use on your Nintendo gameboys, PC driving game keyboard physical left/right buttons replaced by touch screen.
        Enjoy!

But once the big screen fails, you have a paperweight waiting to be thrown to the EV graveyard dumpster. Why? Everything is integrated into the big screen you have in the middle. Yup you can replace it but manufacturer will charge you an arm & a leg for it. Expect it to be $$$$$. They want you to buy a newer EV & toss the current one away.
This is so "environmentally conscious" isn't it??
How nice of them to develop a EV & market it like it's a clean solution to the ICE automobiles. NOT.

EVs are "environmentally friendly" choice?? No CO2 emissions? True but what about CO2 & other harmful contaminates that was released during the manufacturing of the EVs??

Next series coming up from big T….
"We've replaced the brake & accelerator pedal with a all on screen touch function. Now all your steering & brake/accelerator is on the big middle screen"
        Fantastic. NOT.

Wow OP got negged into oblivion

  • +2

You want a 100k car but want it to hold its value? You are asking for the impossible.
I would get an EV that's eligible for fbt exemption under novated lease. That will be a better defense against depreciation than hoping that one of the 100k cars will hold its value.

  • +4

    Volvo XC60, fantastic vehicle.

    • He said no Chinese car preferably…

      • How about an Indian car like a Jaguar or Land Rover?
Maybe a German car like a used Bentley?

  • Does it have to be around $100,000 why not look at around $50,000 range? Is this about bragging rights?

  • Need or want?

  • criteria is:
Has to retain its value somewhat.

    mercedes benz glc
    bmw x3.

Lol - these cars will indeed retain their value "somewhat".

  • If you care so much about depreciation of the car maybe you should just spend a bit less?

  • Own a Lexus NX350H for about a year now and absolutely love it. Mostly used for daily commutes, weekend outings, and the occasional short road trip.

We also got an older Kluger but I can say the NX is the perfect size for an SUV for a small family.

If you got 100K to burn id say the Lexus NX Fsport offers that balance between an SUV premium badge combined with the solid reliability and drive you'd expect from a Toyota given their synergies.

    • Do you find it noisy because of the run flat tyres?

      • Haven't really noticed on normal roads. Can sound abit rough where the roads are not smooth but nothing that bothers me.

  • -1

Save the planet. Use public transport or ride a bike.

Australians need to stop buying mini APCs just to drop one kid off at school or a sporting match. There's a 50%+ sin tax on alcohol; lets put a sin tax on Middle Class Status Symbols like SUVs. Middle Class people can afford it; they are rich. Interest rates kept going up, but housing prices kept going up at the same time. The middle class has far too much money. That's why we have excessive inflation; TOO MUCH MONEY chasing too few goods.

    • +2

SUV's are the best when serving their purpose. I work in agtech. I spend half my time on farms or driving unpaved roads in regional areas. They are the (profanity) best at this. I also take mine camping too. Bees knees. They have scratches and dents, I don't give a shit about that.

But yep, mums buying them to drop off little Jimmy at school and then go to Pilates class is just rediculous.

      • Well you wouldn't have a SUV? Wouldn't you just buy a Landcruiser or at worst a Prado shudder

  • You're buying a car and you want to hold its value? Lol especially if it's going to be thrashed as a family vehicle.

  • No brainer get a lickarse (Lexus).

  • Buy a Cherry SUV & then buy some Merc badges of eBay and put them on the car. 90% of people wouldn’t spit the difference

    "Need"

  • Nissan X-Trail ePower

  • -2

Just buy Lexus and be done with. Mod please close the thread.

    • -1

I agree but 2 others neg ya. Reckon they drive cars from the Bullsh1t Motors Works

  • +1

Does a secondhand BMW iX fit the bill? They'd have lost they're nice to drive, will give you that 'I spend money' aesthetic, and if you want them to they can go like the clappers. But they're full EV so you need to deal with that. The only way you'll have any retention of value after purchase of a 'luxury' SUV is if you buy it after it has already taken the biggest hit. They're not collectibles, they're not rare, they're just expensive, they don't retain value.

The gap between 'luxury' and 'regular' isn't as far apart as it used to be. Dad always buys Mercedes, the fit, finish, 'door noise', everything, used to be leaps and bounds ahead. Now… even a cheap and cheerful yaris comes with radar cruise control, lane keeping, etc.

Lexus are nice to drive, but I hate the interior styling, it's like I'm inside a Robo-Mecha-Gundam… and then I have a cheap looking round analog clock added for some reason.

I'm really happy with my Nissan X-Trail ePower, I've driven the Range Rovers, the Mercs, BMWs, all of them… the major difference is price and how polished the showroom experience is. Even if you set aside any fuel savings, the driving exprience is actually nicer in electric power unless you're buying a firebreathing sportscar for the engine sound.

  • +1

Nissan X trail epower 2024 - bang for your buck

    • Better off with a full Hybrid, there is negligible difference in fuel economy compared to its petrol only variants.

    • I think the battery may not last that long, charge and release all the time, it probably dies in 5 years.

It’s a very gimmick technology, imo.

      • ‘E-Power’ is not that great, have to agree.

      • it probably dies in 5 years.

No one knows. But the old EV batteries from the early Tesla's are still going strong by and large and they are reaching 6 years now.

  • Ah, he wants a ‘Toorak tractor’!Should I say ‘snob value’? Euro’s depreciation is nothing short of insane. You don’t need to spend around 100k on a SUV.Anything Japanese or Korean is fine, very reliable, reasonable service costs.

    • They want the improbable, if not impossible when you consider:

      • Around 100K — the Commonwealth government thanks you for your generous Luxury Car Tax bonus!
      • Good on fuel, but not PHEV and forget EV. So it's a regular hybrid or diesel.

Seems like they decided on a Lexus and worked their way back. A better question would have been: What are the Lexus RX/NX equivalents for around 100K? Because — whisper it — their platforms are shared with cheaper Toyota offerings.

My suggestion is possibly a bad one, but I'd research the hell out of the Alfa Tonale Veloce. Sure, it's a bit shy of 4.6m (at 4.53m) and it's tens of thousands under budget, but they look great inside and out and well under the LCT threshold.

      • Umm, it’s Euro again, & Italian @ that, you would not touch one.Why put yourself through the pain of owning one?

        • -1

Well, yeah but no, as it's Stallantis, Michigan HQ. They're all sorts of things now (Jeep / Alfa / Opel etc).
But yeah, that's another hurdle if you consider it Euro. So it's Lexus, or Lexus.

          • @Speckled Jim: They can be a ownership nightmare.Better off staying away.

  • -1

Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Life is short, enjoy it.

    • +1

Owning an Alfa Romeo and Enjoying life would be an oxymoron imho.

      • 5 years on my Giulia QV and still going strong. A redline a day keeps the mechanic away

  • You want an SUV that maintains it's value and then you look at the likes of Lexus, Mercedes etc. Have a look at the price of second hand Mercedes, it's not good. Compare to the price of something like a Hilux, second hand ones with a bunch of Ks and they are still $40k

  • What is Phev?

    • +1

      Plug in Electric vehicle.

    • +1

      plug-in hybrid

so it has an engine that can charge it up like a regular hybrid, and it also has a bigger battery (than regular hybrid) that can be charged up like an EV, and driven on a short range purely as an EV. I think some get up to 80km range on their battery, so for short runs to the shops its like having a pure EV, and for longer trips you have the range of a hybrid/ICE.

      • +1

        range of a hybrid/ICE.

Your car is also 2 tonnes in weight :)

  • +2

not sure about value retention but check out the genesis GV70. a lot of car for those dollars and they include a lot of great feature for the price

    • +1

Got ours late last year and loving it.

2.5T RWD goes really hard, and the interior has way more than any Euro costing 50% more.

We have people come up and compliment us on the car's appearance, and one of those people ordered one the next day :-)
