Best Mid-Range Smartphone ($300$500) in 2024

Moderators at OzBargain are now running yearly polls to decide the best products in popular categories that get asked repeatedly in the forum. Our aim is to have a central thread where users can vote on the items, suggest options and also change their vote throughout the year. For more information on how these polls work, or if you want to suggest a new poll that isn't covered already, please refer to our announcement thread here.

Question

What is your favourite Mid-range Smart Phone for the year 2024?

Mid-range: Phones with market prices between $300 AUD to $500 AUD. Good phones don't always have to be expensive, and there lots to choose from in this category.

The Winner of last year's poll was the Google Pixel 6a, followed by the Motorola Moto g82 and the Poco F3.

Remember: You can change your votes at anytime, and suggest more than 1 product over the course of the poll.

How do I suggest products to What Should I Buy polls?

If you have a product that you would like to suggest for the poll (that is currently not in the Poll Options), you'll need to make a top-level comment (i.e. not replying someone else's comment) and fill up "Suggestions" text box just above your comment:

Suggestion box

Do try to make a sensible suggestion (e.g make sure the phone is still available to purchase) and include a brief argument as to why you would recommend the product. You can only suggest 1 product at a time.

  • Suggested Google Pixel 7a

6a replacement, more capable as it has more memory

    • May-be owners should provide CANDID-reason why you-re UN-likely to use your-Pixel-7a as a MAIN-phone in your 3rd-yr-of-ownership: 2yrs + ?d

For those who're carrying a power-bank, how long will you endure ?
      May-be NotebookCheck wasn't candid with their reviews-> https://www.notebookcheck.net/Google-Pixel-7a-review-The-nea…

    Suggested Samsung Galaxy A35

    Great Price at Launch!

    • +1

Bonus additions that competion lacks like the pixel 7a

sd card slot, 120htz, big battery life

      • Id just think about the call screening/spam filters as my #1 now. (I dont have a 7a though have a 7 pro 512GB as not having a sdcard means i have to get an expensive phone to store what I need)

        • You can download google phone and mesages for any android phone for filters now, so not too relevant for pixels. And yeah gotta get the bigger storage day one for phones with no sd card. Depends on the end user if they know how much they use/ going to use

    • A35: may be it should be in the LOW-end phone, haha-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15813030/redir

    Suggested Motorola Moto G84

Definitely the most popular phone in the 300-400 range

I was looking for a smartphone, I found those 2 with identical specs:

    *Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 pro 5G ($490)
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/parkaustralia-xiaomi-redmi-note…
*Xiaomi POCO X6 5G (none pro - for only $439 at Kogan)
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/xiaomi-poco-x6-5g-8gb-256gb-blu…

Both use the same\- processor (Snapdragon 7s gen 2, 4nm), ram (8GB), battery size (5100mAh), Charger (67Watt fast charger which come in the box with the phone OMG!!!), operating system (android13 and will receive the Harmony OS later this year), Dual SIM (nano SIM + nano SIM or nano SIM + eSIM), stereo speakers, 3.5mm headphone jack, and storge (256GB), antenna (5G), plastic body, screen size and quality (2712 x 1220 Full HD+, 6.67” CrystalRes AMOLED), screen protection (Corning Gorilla Glass Victus).

The real difference is camera quality is a bite less on the pocco (please look for the reviews from GSM Arena) and the outer looks (especially for the camera bump).

Please keep in mind that both of them are new, so after some time you can find some good discounts on them.

I never seen then in person, but based on the photos I lean towards the looks of the Note 13 pro, but for the price I lean towards the X6 (in both cases my wallet lean towards slapping my face to remind me that my LG G6+ is still good and only need to change battery 😂)

I hope I helped 😊 or at least made you simle 🤪

    • Parallel-import-version: impact from Telstra/Optus 3G shutdown?

  • Any of those AWESOME Motorola Edge 30 or G84 deals

  • Google Pixel 7a is doing well in this poll & the Best High End Smartphone ($500 ⇆ $800) in 2024

It must be an awesome phone!

    • Might also be confused as to which price category it falls into.

  • Non-event of a thread lol .
    Look up last year's.

  • Whats the best iphone at this price range?

    • There aren't any new iPhones in this price range, you'd be looking at used / refurbished unit, or older stock (circa 2021~2022). Of course you'd want to buy the newest generation possible.

iPhone SE's tend to be the cheapest but also the most basic series of iPhone (only a single camera, small display, battery life is unspectacular, the bezels are chunky and the resolution is only 720p). iPhone SE 3rd Gen $559 @ School Locker (no longer in stock)

      • Yeah i was referring to used/refurbs at that price point.
I'll keep an eye out on gumtree ebay etc

Wish i saw that se deal the other day 😕

  • Suggested Motorola Razr 40

Motorola RAZR 40 will be priced at $499 at all retailers. I believe this might be the cheapest folding screen phone that you can buy for $500.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/843652

    https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/motorola-razr-40-review-makes-t…

    Operating System Android 13
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Mobile Platform
    4200mAh Battery
30W TurboPower charging support (33W charger included)
    5W wireless charging support
    IP52 Water-repellent design
    SW updates until 2027

    2 Displays

    Main display: 6.9-inch pOLED 2640 x 1080, up to 144Hz

    External display: 1.5-inch OLED 194 x 368, up to 60Hz

    3 Cameras

    Main: 64MP (f/1.7, 1/2″, 0.7 or 1.4μm@16MP Quad Pixel) | AF | OIS | Laser Autofocus + Ambient Light Sensor
    Wide: 13MP (f/2.2, 1/3″, 1.12μm) | AF | Ultra wide | FOV 120°32MP selfie camera
    Selfie: 32MP (f/2.4, 0.7 μm) | 8MP (f/2.4, 1.4um) Quad Pixel

The SOC is not very fast though and it falls behind many other folding screen phones, such as the Samsung Galazy Z Flip4 by a considerable margin.

Not a phone I would personally use, but it's cool that folding phones have dropped to mid-range tier pricing.

    5000 mAh battery

  • Suggested Nothing Phone (2a)

    https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=12760&idPhone…

    Nothing phone 2a 128gb $529 ebay for $479

  • G84 is very gd except camera
    Got for $240

    • GCam seems to fix that.

  • Do all the top phones listed here support VoLTE (4G 700 MHz (B28))?

  • Suggested Motorola Moto G54

    Suggestion: Motorola Moto 54G 5G

Selling for around $250 (RRP$300) but has varied from $200 to $300 in the last couple of months.
Best price is from Amaysim at $209 at time of posting

This phone has oustanding user ratings !!!

    • Big FHD 6.5" screen
    • Android 13
    • Octacore processor
    • 4G and 5G compatible so future proof
    • very capable 50MP camera system with OIS
    • Massive 5000mAh battery, and speedy charging
    • 128gb of built-in storage plus memory card expansion up to 1TB
    • 8GB memory
    • water repellent design
    • Unlike other phones includes charger, cable and protective cover in box

    Find me better for $250!

From a quality and features point of view its definitely Mid-Range !

    • +1

I would not be buying the G54 for any price beginning with a 2.

It won't receive any feature updates beyond the first one.

After that, it's just an additional 2 years of security updates, that's it.

There are leaks for the G55, which is expected to release at some point between now and the end of the year.

The best midrange (200-500) phone is the google pixel 7a (a 750 dollar phone). good job ozbargain…

    • There were sub-$500 deals when this poll was first posted. I got mine for $499:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/832442

I don't agree that it's the best phone in this price range, though. It's a regression from Pixel 5.
