I strongly believe that people who didn't like 2 and 3 just didn't understand them. There's an awesome fan page that explains everything they omitted that makes the 2 sequels coherent. 4 however is a total cash grab, as the Wachowskis said themselves
2 and 3 are not exactly complicated.
They're just no where near the original.
4 was almost offensively bad (even if you take it as the meta joke they meant it to be).
1 was great.
2 was good, but needed to be cut down and more tightly edited.
3 was garbage.
And 4 was the stinking turd that sat on top that garbage.
1st one was a masterpiece. I remember the feeling I had walking out of the movie theatre to this date. Me and my friends were completely blown away. The prequel animations they did were also awesome. I think it should have ended on the second movie, somehow…
But there were only 3 movies
