The way these companies do their gas charges are some of the most opaque things. I can’t actually tell who is cheaper and what standard charges are etc. the whole thing feels like it’s just BS to confuse us.

What I do is take my latest bill and calculate what each company will charge me according to their rates and discounts. Then I don't have to flip flop around comparing the cents between pages. AGL has come up the cheapest all these years, their discount covers the supply charge as well

    • All the gas retailers only discount usage, and the usage rates are set by the wholesaler, so the percentage comparisons are relevant.

The account fee is different per retailer, but that only makes a few cents per day difference, so not a deal breaker except in very odd cases.

      • AGL discounts does include the supply charge, did 2 years on 56% off and recently it's 41% this year but does still include the supply charge

Just two years. Ok. The savings are not off WA's lowest standard gas usage charge but off the standard residential gas price that Alinta charges which I'm sure is not WA's lowest gas usage charge.

  • Comparing them to my current deal with Kleenheat, which apparently is a 38% discount with no end date…

Daily supply charge is 0.6 cents cheaper than Kleenheat.
Daily account charge is 7 cents cheaper than Kleenheat.

Cost per unit is 10.94 cents for the first 12 units and then 9.87 cents for the subsequent units.
Kleenheat is 10.70 cents per unit.

According to the numbers, I'd have saved $3 with Alinta, but gotten the $50 obviously as well.

But after the 2 years, bit unclear what the cost per unit would be.

Way too much hassle for $3'ish.

  • I was with Alinta for my first home occupation for the first 3 years or so (started 2014) since I was living with parents before and they were also blindly getting charged full price by them, before little did I realise they had been charging me standard tariff, no discount nothing meanwhile opposition Kleenheat has been promoting in shopping centre’s middle corridor kioks which I’ve been ignoring it (therefore partly my fault for being lazy).
So i went to Kleenheat (45% off back then) and said 凸(¬‿¬)凸 you Alinta.
As much as I’d love to support local, unfortunately too hard to pass up AGL’s 56% disc including cheaper supply and admin fee etc plus bonus $100-$150 in Mastercard GiftCard and also a year worth of free Prime membership, that was Feb 2022 so been with them 2 years and still going strong now.

Not long after I jumped to Kleenheat, Alinta enticed me back with a discount offer (which iirc was on par or worse than what I had going on with Kleenheat back then) so regardless, still said 凸(¬‿¬)凸 you Alinta forever.

    • AGL is down to 41% discount now, at the end of your offer period it will revert.

      • I cant remember what the guarantee is (1 or 2 years) but I’ve just hit 2 years with the last bill so we’ll see. Either way even if it drops to 41% that’s still better than Kleenheat/Alinta’s 35%

      • My 56% discount automatically changed to 41% when my (longer than) 2 year period was over. They don't just put you on the full price plan after the period is over
