Is There a Tablet Specifically for Drawing/Art?

Gday,

My arty niece turns 13 and wish to get her a tablet with capabilities of drawing on the tablet with different colours, and saving them for use.
Suggestions of arty-type software compatible with tablet appreciated.

Thank you

Budget - otherwise I recommending iPad Pro.

    • … or for slightly less outlay, Apple Pencil 2 works with iPad Mini (6th) and iPad Air (4th and later). Suggest starting with Sketchbook®, free in iPad OS

Had a Samsung tablet with an S pen that was decent for drawing (at least my kid thought so). Think it was a S6 or 7

iPad is probably best bet. Or a cheap graphics tablet (that is the drawing tablet with no screen, just a rectangle of plastic, can be bought very cheaply) that you plug into a computer, kind of standard kit for Adobe use, especially Photoshop. If you don't want to pirate or subscribe to Photoshop, then Affinity might be a good choice. They were just bought by Canva and they promised to support lifetime licenses even after they introduce a subscription. Canva is unstoppable, Adobe really should have bought Canva when they were valued at just a few billion…

It's interesting looking at all of these missed opportunities. Myspace (king in 2007) decline to purchase Facebook. Yahoo decline to purchase Google. I just mention these because I was reading about the history of the internet several months ago on Wikipedia.

Canva displacing Adobe as the default pro design tools would be huge. Canva instantly went from dinky templates to (which apparently already made it worth billions) to potential Adobe competitor. Not bad for a small business started in Perth.

    1) Wacom Cintiq https://www.wacom.com/en-au/products/pen-displays/wacom-cint…
    2) Lenovo ThinkPad X201T, or X230T (the versions with multiple finger touch and pen touch): These are convertible old tablet models but perfect for drawing. You can find/buy a cheap one off ebay.

    • 1) Wowser. I can just hear the words of my old best friend, "That cost more than my Falcon!"

Thanks for suggestions, prob go with ipad and pencil

    • If you can get her a drawing glove and a screen protector that is textured like paper.

    Panadol maybe ?

Surely something like LSD would have been a funnier answer?

I was going to post another tablet, but didn't want to get put in the penalty box.

        • +2

MDMA would probably be even funnier. LSD isn't often in pill form, but both are known to be used to enhance creativity by artists, some of them anyway.

Soon AI will put artists out of business. I was just browsing Etsy and noticed lots of AI generated Tarot decks; some have a very consistent style from card to card and are very detailed. With the right software and models and a powerful, high VRAM GPU, plus giving detailed and creative instructions to the AI, you can get results equal to a skilled human artists.

I bet it'll put some out of business, but that others will be making more money than ever. People will one day pay a premium for certified human art even if it looks worse than AI art.

Still no reason not to do it as a hobby that one enjoys. If you think its just art that AI is coming for, look out, it has huge labour displacement potential across the board. Just looking at office copilot demos and I was thinking "that's 80% of what my boss asks me to do".

  • I think a 13 year old would enjoy an iPad over a Wacom unless she has specifically expressed interest in a Wacom.

iPad Pro 12.9" is probably ideal unless it's too expensive for your budget or she prefers a smaller iPad. Obviously you'd need to buy the Apple Pencil too.

If you want her to use the iPad as her laptop for schoolwork as well then consider buying a keyboard for it too.

If she prefers something larger, Samsung has the Galaxy Tab S8/S9 Ultra, 14.6" IIRC.

  • Make sure to get a magnetic pen rather than a cheap capacitive pen.

I think a tablet over a wacom (no image on screen) would be easier to use for a child.

Samsung has a learn to draw with art sharing function built in, i noticed it on my s24ultra.

  • OP asked "specifically for drawing/art" that is why Wacom is the #1, not necessarily the cheapest, though.
I did some simple googling task for OP who could/should do him/herself.
    https://www.creativebloq.com/features/best-drawing-tablet
Here cheaper options, too, but epple ranks 7 out of 9 and more expensive than Cintiq, and semsang not in the list at all.
    https://www.clipstudio.net/how-to-draw/archives/158824
Here, again epple and semsang at the bottom of the list.
    https://www.techradar.com/best/the-best-drawing-tablet-year-…
Here epple ranks 4, so not the best.
There might be some other lists where epple or semsang my rank at the top. In general, they are not the best, nor the cheaper/cheapest ones.
One should not expect much from this forum which is a worst sibling of whirlpool/reddit.

    • Good job googling. Best is subjective. I can almost guarantee the niece would prefer an iPad with Procreate to a wacom tablet.

  • Artist wife uses procreate on iPad (pro) to test ideas before putting to canvas
