I bought myself an HP N40L and installed FreeNAS - mainly because it's free. Even with the 8gb of RAM, I could not sustain a transfer of more than 40mbytes a second. I read every forum, tried every parameter tweak etc. Nothing made a difference.
I have now updated to FreeNAS 8.3 (which was released a few days ago). Without changing a single setting, my performance has skyrocketed from ~40 megabytes a second to over 70 megabytes a second.
If you're running FreeNAS on the N40L, I highly recommend the update to version 8.3. Please make sure you have the experience to update the firmware - and SAVE your settings first, in case something goes wrong. You may need to "recover" your system.
Here's the link to the 64-bit binaries… Make sure you're running 64-bit FreeNAS if you use these binaries.
