Need a Screen Protector for a 77 Inch OLED

Hi everyone, just got a 77 inch S95C from a deal on Samsung EDU store. Sweet deal and TV. Wall mounted with speaker. Very Happy with it.

My 11 month old Son has taken to climbing up on the entertainment unit and smacking the screen with his hands. Starting to get light scratches on it which is fine, you don’t notice when it’s on BUT if he grabs a toy or something and gives it a whirl, I am going to lose it.

Just got thinking, a screen protector might work. Found a few that are quite expensive that fit. Might investigate some Perspex solutions too.

Couple of questions if anyone knows.

  1. Would a screen protector heat up the panel a bit and wear out the TV any faster?
  2. Does anyone have a protector they could recommend ?

Thanks team

  • How is the 11 month old climbing up the entertainment unit? Can you somehow stop that?

A screen protector won't work. You admit to leaving the baby alone so if you apply the screen protector…you'll feel safe…leave the 11 Month old for longer and he'll smash your TV.

Does he only do it when the TV is on? Maybe don't watch TV around a 11 month old? Easier said then done I know but we did it. My toddler has yet to punch out TV…maybe some kids just enjoy punching tvs?

My advice is to limit his access….protection doesn't work

    • It's hard but it can be done. Our toddler will be 4 in a few months time and his total tv time is probably under 1 hour. He does watch stuff on a tablet now but he's not allowed to watch the tv. We don't turn the TV on when he is around/awake. He doesn't go near the TV.

  • Paint protection film (PPF) that is applied to cars would work I assume. It's a self healing transparent film. This stuff was applied to my Tesla touch screen and you don't even notice it's there.

Lots of different brands out there. Dentless is the car detailer who applied it to my screen, PremiumShield® Elite SH might be the product they used.

Edit: FYI, this specific brand might not be cheap - 'PPF screen protectors - from $65' - Though this stuff is meant to hold up to highway speeds + outdoor elements with lifetime warranty. I expect you could find cheaper stuff since it's only going on your TV.

How is the screen protector going to save your TV when your kid chuck your phone at it..? Don't ask me how I know…..

I did a calculation for you.

A 77 inch TV will have an area of 17,800cm2 roughly.
An iphone 15 max screen protector has an area of 110cm2.

So you will need 162 iphone 15 max screen protectors to cover the TV. Now your LG TV has a glass coating. That should solve your problem!

  • need a buffer between the TV and child, first block access to the stand, then something that blocks the TV. so maybe some small plants infront of the TV that child wont like touching, and even toys or boxes (that cant be climbed) infront of the tv unit

    • Yeah, great idea with small plants!! Something like Stinging Nettle should do it. : ) .
How about turning up the volume to maximum whenever he gets too close?, he will soon realise that getting too close to the TV will cause a big noise and therefore keep his distance from it. If the TV speakers are not loud enough fit the Samsung HW990C soundbar, I guarantee that will scare him on full tilt!!

  • After my kid broke my first Sony 75" TV when he chucked a toy (was an accident), I ended up getting a new 85" tv but this time getting the shipping box and creating a cardboard panel. They don't make protectors this size or they were crazy expensive.

Inside I put bubble wrap and foam around the box so its thick. It then velcro's on to the TV as a cover when its not in use. It looks silly but it protects the TV, we mostly watch when the kids go to bed anyway. It's easy to get off/on and it's done the job. If you need more info pm me

    • An ultra short throw projector sounds so much better than this

      • Mounted on the ceiling, as the kid will be touching otherwise.

      • Not if you already have the TV

  • Any screen protector that size will be very expensive or a diy job that will significantly decrease picture quality. Alternative would be to remove the entertainment unit & wall mount the TV so there is no climbing frame to get to it.

Most big TVs that need to be durable are purpose built commercial units. Not much of a market for protectors for consumer grade gear.

  • smacking the screen with his hands

If my kid did that it would be my hands that would be smacking

  • Wall mount the TV up high, remove antiquated entertainment unit and install a moat with crocodiles.

Do parents think children only start listening after a certain age?

You have an 11 month old child and you chose to buy a balla TV in their reach. It's asking for trouble. You won't be able to truly enjoy the TV until you just accept the risk otherwise you'll just spend all your time worrying which probably sours the experience.

Every child is different, if I knew mine couldn't be trusted with the TV, I would just settle for a cheaper one.

  • My 4 yr old broke the 65" TV with his lightsaber when the enemy appeared in the cartoon. He has never done anything to the TV because he knows I hate finger prints. I have a line on the floor 3m away to limit viewing distance. He gladly obey all the rules but I've never said not to hit the TV because I know he's not the destructive kind. And yet he did it.

Now I have a 32" which is really small when sitting 3meter away and it reminds him of his mischievous. Anyway he's lucky to have 32", the tube TV I had when I was a kid is much smaller but it is lightsaber-proof.

I think a 3mm thick acrylic is good insurance against kids with lightsabers.
