Spotify plans to raise the price of its popular audio service in several key markets for the second time in a year, a crucial step towards reaching long-term profitability.
The streaming giant will increase prices by about $US1 ($1.50) to $US2 a month in five markets by the end of this month, including the UK, Australia and Pakistan, according to people familiar with the matter. It would raise prices in the US, its largest territory, later this year, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confi

Xmanager if you're on Android is great as an alternative to Spotify.
What does that do?
Annoying for those of us that couldn't care less about audiobooks (or podcasts) and would rather have a cheaper plan without them.
I read somewhere that there will be a new basic plan that won't include audiobooks.
You mean from the link in the post?
Probably not from this article as it's pay-walled I didn't bother with printfiendly.
@youfnc: Ahh, sorry, I didn't realise. I'm logged into the paper myself.
Honestly youtube premium seems to be winning here, spotify keeps raising prices non-stop it's getting out of hand if you're not on a family plan :(
Greedy artists demanding more money. real artists do it out of passion and for the love of the craft
You must be one of those people who hire people for "exposure".
Just like anyone else who has a job and expects to be paid to do that job, so should artists have that ability, otherwise how else can they survive.
Yeah and it was all in the music news the past couple months of Spotify actually screwing artists and raising the stream threshold before even being eligible for their pittance of royalties. Indy artists are the ones that lose most.
This is Spotify wanting more cash. None will be going to artists. Spotify is not artist friendly at all.
Been using youtube premium + the added bonus of Youtube music and it's been pretty impressive, don't need spotify and the music selection is just as good.
Spotify family is still great value
Snoop Dogg Got Paid Less Than $45,000 For Having One Billion Streams On Spotify
Sounds like Spotify pay artists pretty much the same as what the high seas pays them.
From the same article:
That being said, of you write your own music, own the rights to the publishing, and don’t have 10 co-writers in the room to split it up with, you’d be pocketing SIGNIFICANTLY more money than $45,000.
So much of his music is collaboration with featured artists.
Also, is that how artists are paid? Once they reach a billion streams? Or, just maybe, they're paid along the way…?
According to this artist calculator https://soundcamps.com/spotify-royalties-calculator/;
*if you own 100% of the royalties,
*have 1 billion streams with "Worldwide (Average)" locations, you will earn USD$2,380,000, or USD$0.00238 per stream.
Playing with the locations is interesting though, if you could get that 1billion streams from Iceland you'd earn USD$6,180,000, whilst if it was Tunisia you'd earn only USD$700,000 (I couldn't find OzBargains favourite Spotify location of Turkey)
Once they reach a billion streams? Or, just maybe, they're paid along the way…?
"from early 2024 only songs that receive 1000 streams or more will be eligible for payouts, which has been highly criticized by the independent music community as a way for them to pay artists less"
https://soundsightmag.com/news-spotify-royalty-payout-model-…So you have to have a song that is streamed 1000 times before it can get monitised. There is also something about how they will fingerprint who is streaming the song to ensure its genuine streams and not 'fraud'.
Yet another reason to use Tidal. They pay the artists much, much more per stream. Would you rather your subscription costs go to the artist or Joe Rogan contracts and Audiobooks experiments?
It does depend on where your membership is though. They get less from a membership based in Argentina for example.
