the trend is declining sales worldwide, that's the reason Tesla and all other EV brands keep slashing prices

        • +11

Have you been outside? If so you would know that is incorrect. It is just competition, which is good.

          • +1

@Aureus: Lucky your graph is not showing sales for 2024.

            https://youtu.be/bo2VVM0PzDU

            • +4

@TheDusty: Not watching random Youtube clips, but the data I have seen for 2024 is slowing growth. That is still an upwards trend, even if it isn't as high growth as we have seen in the previous years.

              • @Aureus: Tesla -9% sales, yeah that's "slowing growth".

                • +1

@CrazyTachikoma: Tesla is 1 car company, not the entire industry. Tesla's sales have dropped because of competition, as above.

        • +4

EV brands keep slashing prices because more and more chinese models are coming to market, no longer are EVs just for the $60-100k bracket

          • -4

@Pacify: look outside Australia for a second, while here the early adopters haven't been satisfied yet, in Europe/US that has happened already and all brands, Tesla/Chinese/traditional makers, are slashing EV prices because they are not selling

        • +1

A small decrease over the last few months during a cost of living crisis is a bit far from a trend. You need more data points to declare a trend.

          • -1

@sponson: I'd agree if the entire car market had the same performance, which is not the case. Many brands are hitting record sales, specially Toyota and other that sell hybrids.

      • Not really. They still outsold BYD

    • +6

Nah just Tesla lost their monopoly,

Care to share the trend in the proportion of EV's to ICE vehicles in 2024 vs 2023?

      Yeah, didn't think so.

      • -2

Care to share the trend in the proportion of EV's to ICE vehicles in 2024 vs 2023?

I haven’t checked the lastest data, but I’m pretty sure the trend is going one way, and that’s up.

    • +2

Could it be because there's many more options, and Elon is making Tesla a toxic brand that you don't want to associate with? 🤔

Or is it because all EVs are dying and petrol cars are the way to go even though they're being phased out in most countries and are shit for the environment. Hmm. I just don't know!

      • +1

        Lol
        Evs dying
        Ok bud

    • +7

I will wake you up when it is 5k

      • +1

Impressive feat to wake the dead

    • +5

Let me know when is not a GWM.

  • -6

Good lord that thing is ugly

    • +3

Looks are purely Its subjective. Saw it during ev show and checked it out. I didn’t like how small it was interior wise and boot space.
Styling wasn’t that bad compared to aged tesla bs tbh.

  • +2

I actually like the styling. I drove this car, and it's pretty decent. I'm just not sure if it's worth changing over from an Mk6 Golf R.

    • +1

5 years ago I swapped from a Stage 1 tuned Mk7 Golf R (0-100 in 3.7 sec) to a Tesla Model 3 Performance, that on paper is only slightly faster to 100, but the difference is staggering. 100% torque from 0 RPM is just brutal acceleration for day to day use, and no "Launch Mode", no slipping clutch packs, no lag. Punch it and you are gone.

      • I am interested in your view after five years ownership of EV. Is it still solid? Do you think it can last another 5 to 10 years?

      • Do you still have the Tesla? When I floored the Ora from 0kph it does go hard.

  • +9

    WTF, no android auto?

    • +2

Google dont want to play by Chyna rules. No Android Auto for you then!!!

  • -5

Due diligence. Ten minutes on Google will save you a fortune. Buy a Corolla Cross hybrid. It's just common sense.

    • +2

what did Google find you that ozb couldn't?

But this is what I found https://youtu.be/84Galo6sIFU

      • The truth. So much garbage advice on this site.
At the cost of the Ora you can buy a much better car and a more reliable experience.

        • +1

Truth is, the government want EV, people want EV, and for people in this country, this is the cheapest EV you can buy. Cheap != The best, but what can you do when you don't have money? and hybrid != EV.

          • -1

@boomramada: Cheap ? The price of a car is not the only consideration. Maintenance and repairs but the main one is depreciation. That is what kills all EV vehicles.
Look at Car sales.com. Virtually all Tesla's are advertised at below market value and they can't sell them.

    • +1

Now that is an ugly car. Can't fault the drivetrain and the reliability, but it looks like a half crushed tonka toy

  • Does it come with unlocked god mode

  • +6

That’s actually an attractive car, like a Vespa on 4 wheels. Far better looking than model Y, that car is so ugly, the owners should pay a special levy as part of rego for causing an eye sore

    • Far better looking than model Y

100%. Don’t know why tesla fanbois keep defending this eyesore of a design 🤷‍♂️.

      • +1

I've always thought Teslas look all disproportionate - like their cars have melted and warped from being too close to a fire.

  • +13

Damn why don't people like the way it looks? I genuinely think it doesn't look bad ….

    • +5

I'd actually buy this car if I was after a daily run around car. It is unique and stylish in a good way. Kind of like the original relaunch of the Mini Cooper or Fiat 500. The Porsche inspire wheels look good and the interior is funky but not quirky like the BYD ATTO 3.

Need more cheap family EVs to hit the market.

    • +4

People like to whinge about anything on the internets.

      • +2

I whinge about things offline too.

    • +10

Meh many people buying EVs also have solar. So charge your EV off solar when you can and you're good.

      • +1

People with cars and a job generally drive them during the day

        • +8

Friends with EVs tend to charge them once or twice a week, so take advantage of solar on the weekend.

        • WFH half the week

      • -1

Fair enough idea if you can. Electric is suited to city stop/start traffic where they can recover some power with braking. Like electric can be good for power tools. Electric cars aren't much good for open roads or extreme temps. No good for towing or many conditions in Australia.

        • +2

I agree, for rural areas there are cars suitable better than EV. But I can say you, EV cars are not toys for shopping trips. I have Tesla Model Y, and it has honest 330-350kms of freeway range. With 5 people in, aircon full power (I'm in QLD), with plenty of load (it has a lot of space). I can easily go from Brisbane to Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast and back on a single charge at home and will have plenty of charge left.

        • +1

If you are a farmer in the back of behond, and you have solar (because you are feed up with paying crazy prices for fuel to be delivered to the station), an ev is such an easy choice.

        • +4

Even then, rent the 4WD for the annual road trip if that's what you need? For the rest of the time the EV will cost 30% to 'fuel' it.

Even in country/regional areas, unless you're super remote, EV can still make sense as they have 300k+ range now. There would be very few people smashing out 1000km day in day out.

Maybe even these families will have two cars and keep a diesel ute for certain tasks and EV for other tasks? Even if it was say 50-100km into town and same return, this is easily done with EV.

No one's saying EV should replace all vehicles, but in majority of cases it will be a viable option, and you can still use the diesel ute for those minority of people that need to two/4WD, etc.

Not only far reduced fuel costs, but the big reduction in maintenance and servicing is a huge plus.

    • +5

I charged 23kwh purely from Solar today, which gives around 164km for my Tesla. You don't have to charge your EV at night. For example, I have an EV electricity plan with free energy 11am-2pm. I'm not particularly benefit from it, as my solar production is high. But it can be attractive for many EV owners, an they will be changing from solar energy (not necessarily produced by them) , huge proportion of which would be wasted otherwise.

    • +10

I think you've been watching too much Sky news! It's not really a fair assessment of our energy mix taking a sample at 8.45pm when the sun won't be shining.
Having said that unfortunately Australia is very backwards when it comes to renewables.
It is possible to power an EV mainly from renewables though. Since i purchased my EV over 5 months ago, over 90% of the energy I've used to power it has come from renewables (mainly from my excess rooftop solar).

    • +1

Yea let's take night time generation data, when the sun is down. Ofc you won't see any generation from solar. Taking data from midday today will show you wind + solar makes up for 44% of our generation

      • -8

Coal gas and hydro are baseload. Need to be sized to prevent blackouts when no wind or sun. Fyi furnaces often just let off the steam so it's wasted when solar kicks in because it takes time to heat and cool. A scam.

    • +6

Australian coal > middle eastern oil 🤷‍♂️

At least burning Australian coal keeps jobs in the hunter region and the bowen basin rather than in Saudi Arabia.

Also, the amount of co2 from burning coal is less than unleaded/diesel, and the pollution is in remote areas rather city centres.

      • +1

you could also make the argument that burning coal is local reducing transport carbon, instead of oil transported from the other side of the world from countries were likely not to agree with on many important issues.

    • +1

I prefer Aussie coal to middle eastern oil

    • +1

Wow who would have thought Solar produces less electricity at night time!!!

    • +1

'Less solar power when it's dark' is the kind of fact you can only get from OzB comments.

      Thank you for educating us.

    • +1

Ah yes, lets pick peak time generation when you shouldn't be charging your car cause if you're on a TOU tariff you'll get slugged the peak rate. How about you also show the 12pm generation mix on the same day?

  • -3

    Chyna no. 1!

  • Such divided opinion on the looks! I think it looks like someone stood on a cane toad.

  • -1

tbh, the Ora looks like a mouse, not the computer mouse, but the real mouse…

  • Saw a bunch of these in Thailand.. they're quite cute actually.. design definitely leans much more feminine than the ordinary car though

  • -7

The dumping of Chinese EVs is happening.
They can’t sell them in China, so they are being dumped on whoever will take them.
Chinese economy is not good atm

    • +8

I welcome them to dump it here. would be a win for consumers and bargain lovers.

      • -3

        Buying garbage isnt a bargain

        • +7

This car is more of a bargain than anything you’ve posted

  • +7

We purchased an Ora 6 months ago and one of the main control systems has failed, which means you can't operate the a/c, radio and maps etc.

Car has been at the dealers for over 2 weeks and they can't give a timeframe for a solution, leaving us without a car.

I can understand some teething issues with a newly designed car, but the service from the dealer has been awful to the point they're not returning calls or answering emails anymore.

    • Contact them & pretend to be a reporter from "A Current Affair". This should speed things up.

      • +1

Really don't want to go down the "social media" route, but it's heading that way unfortunately.
Seems to be the only effective way to escalate poor customer service these days :/

        • +1

Do you know if this control system is a isolated issue with your car or common complaints on ora forums?

        • stuff like this is exactly what gives me pause about jumping in to something like this, that and the lack of android auto, but that niggle that if something goes wrong is the warranty actually worth anything

e2a: @TightArseGingerBeer - Interested to know how much it's costing to insure?

    • Is the car driveable in the meantime, while the dealer gets parts etc..?

      • No, it's unsafe to drive. Intermittently a loud buzzing noise will come through the speakers!

  • +1

Does not currently support Apple Carplay or Android Auto (when most cars even 5 years ago have this built in!) . Don't know how the reviewer on drive.com.au could write about that function when it isn't actually there. Doesn't have inbuilt maps. So if you're buying one, get ready to get the phone mount out to use your phone for maps.

    • +2

Our Ora has wireless Apple Car Play.
It does drop out quite often at specific locations, so I'm assuming it's an interference issue??

      • +1

Probably. My wireless Android auto via aawireless drops out at a specific part of my commute.

    • +2

All Tesla do not support Apple carplay

  • +1

    No android auto?

  • +1

has anyone considered the resale value - zilch value.
has anyone check what comprehensive premiums insurance costs? EVs premiums are way higher
NO Digital Broadcasts (DAB) listening AM radio?

    • +2

Zilch? I call bs, find me a zilch value car and I’ll buy it

    • +3

EV premiums are not way higher. I’ve been looking at a second hand, 5yo EV recently and the insurance quote I got from NRMA was cheaper than what we paid them for insurance last year for our 12yo SUV even though the value of the EV was way higher, probably $30K higher than our existing SUV.

  • Perfect car for dyslexics that want a bmw on a budget.

  • +2

    $19,990 and I'd consider it.
looks almost cute in the pictures, until you see one on the road and it's 3x the size, it looks like a massive overblown child's toy.

  • +1

Actually own one. Novated it, makes it crazy cheap. Really impressed with the little thing. The interior is the best in its category, by a huge margin.

    • I've been considering NL. But when asking of interest %, they wanted me to do credit check. May I ask what interest % is yours? Cheers

      • They said rate of the day, but it’s 10.2%. Was not negotiable (SG Fleet). Unfortunately high but the math seems to still make sense. I novated it over 2 years.

  • +1

These things will be worth $10k in 2 years.
Watch the arse end drop out of the second hand EV market in the same period of time due to unknown long term reliability/longevity based on motor & batteries.

    • +2

Hardly. There's Teslas that have been around for years with little maintenance required.

Resale value too isn't quite as important as otherwise would be given 'fuel' is 30% of petrol and pretty much no maintenance required apart from usual consumables such as tyres, wiper blades, etc.

In reality most cars have huge drop off in resale in the first few years which is why it often doesn't make sense to buy a new car but a used one where the previous owner has taken most of the depreciation hit.

    • +1

      Based on?

To date there has been one car with problematic batteries - a very old, very low range leaf.

Most of the current reports have EVs showing excellent battery performance relative to warranty - not unreasonable to expect better than 80% range at 10 years, and likely continued slow degradation from there.

Our anecdata is about 1% range loss per year.

We've had bigger problems with punctures and solenoids failing - which are exactly the same components as conventional ICE cars.

    • Try googling million mile tesla.

  • +2

Probably would have gone for the Ora if I was able to fit in the front seat. Too tall/wide. I think it’s looks pretty cool inside.

We are getting the MG4 instead on lease. Crazy cheap.

  • I agree it looks odd, but is not different to most other new cars these days, especially EVs. The manufacturers seem to be trying to outdo each other designing weird looking cars that look like they made by kids with jelly molds and lego

If you squint it doesn't look too different to the new porsches

  • +3

Looks like EVs are approaching widespread price parity with legacy auto.

As the range and production of EVs massively increases in the next two to five years we will almost certainly see ICE cars becoming more expensive to purchase due to diminishing economies of scale. While EVs get cheaper.

We could even see the smaller legacy makers collapse as they are squeezed out of the diminishing ICE supply chain.

Should be a very interesting five years in the automotive world.

  • Ugly AF. How & why do they manage to contrive such awful looking vehicles.

  • That's a great price.

  • Ok why is this a deal again? Is it because it's an EV? I'd rather buy a Swift for mid 20's and save 10k, now that's a deal.
