[April Fools] Gold Coast Council to Remove Bike Lanes for Bigger Parking Spaces

Way overdue.
About time, Council has listened and finally have acted to remove bike lanes.
100% got my support.

And so they should… With many commuters making the transition from bicycles to Dodge RAM and Chevy Silverado mega-utes, we need to be making better use of the spaces around us.

A lot of the land around us that is used for bicycle paths could be better utilised if it were opened up to allow these utes to be able to pass slower drivers on the left hand side. Converting many of these "bike paths" back into "road related areas" would ease congestion for these drivers who just need to get to their destination.

I am also looking forward to the new Australian Standard for parking spaces being revised in light of the growing popularity of mega-utes and how these utes are the backbone of the Australian manufacturing and construction industries… "Without Dodge RAMS, Australia stops!"

I am also going to put forward that all EV charging stations be removed, as they are a passing "fad" and that most "EVangilists" claim they just charge at home anyway… My only concern is that newer mega-ute drivers wont know where to park if there are no EV parking spots to block in, so I am going to mandate that every 2nd or 3rd parking sport me painted as if it were an EV charging bay, thus acting like a home beacon for new mega-ute owners to know where they can park.

      Completely agree,

The piss weak sissy, beta male girlyman lycra clad brigade are no match for the testosterone filled Dodge Ram Me Harder driving alpha males , who, lets be honest are the epitome of human evolution, wife beaters n all.

They make me moist just at the thought of how big and masculine they are.

Personally i think they should go harder and mandate that no car under 2.5 tonnes is allowed to be imported into Australia, and if you do you'll be subject to a 100% tax and required to write a 1000 word apology for buying such a practical car.

I’ll agree with the ram 1500’s, they’re just big for the hell of it. but 2500s and beyond are extremely useful, particularly for towing. Many vehicles advertise 3.5 tonne towing “capacity” but can never reach it due to gvm and gcm issues, and particularly axle loadings.

People buy these large utes to be compliant, legal and comfortable when doing hard work that most other vehicles cannot- previously in AU the only option was to move into a light rigid truck like an NPR300

Just because something is big and scary doesn’t mean it has no use. If you have ever driven, or especially towed with one, you would understand their purpose.

links on the msn page are to scam web sites

I particularly hate that at work with Edge as our default browser.

Clicking what you think is a link to a news article and instead being taken to "Sky news" or "Daily Mail".

No, at least one of them goes to Sky News.

About damn time. Great to see some common sense prevail for once in Australia. Cyclists and their lattes barely generate any revenue for businesses.

The new parking spaces will measure three metres wide by seven metres long

Bit cramped, but I guess I can live with that. I can finally consider upgrading. I'll finally be able to park my raptor (which is bigger and taller than other raptors) without worrying about EV drivers damaging my vehicle.

The next thing I'd like to see is narrower pavements to make lanes wider.

If the meter maids are still around, I wholeheartedly support this change

This doesn't go far enough IMO.

There's plenty of beach front that's wasted on teens going to schoolies each year.

Why not make the beach a giant parking space, creating more parking and hopefully preventing teens from drinking to boot.

    • Silly me - I thought that’s what the Gold Coast already was…

This reads like The Onion. Hard to believe they are bowing to a handful of mega SUV owners to remove bike paths. It reads like satire.

    • MSN is one of the more balanced news sources. They've improved heaps since getting rid of their human staff and relying on AI.

Also, not sure what your issue is with The Onion. Guess you'll also be complaining about the Betoota Advocate, the Shovel or the Chaser.

      Ummmm. Maybe check date. Cheers

About time. I'm often finding myself complaining about all the traffic as I drive along alone in my large vehicle.
Getting rid of those space wasting bike lanes would free up the traffic flow immensely.

Removing the lanes seems a tad unnecessary. Maybe just a sign every hunded metres saying cyclists must giveway to Raptors.

  • Given the traffic and infrastructure, the Gold Coast is already one big parking lot.

  • +1

Never see a cyclist is a cycle lane anyway 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • what? no [April's Fool] tag?

  • Sound's like they got common sense

Reading the comments here you have to wonder, do y'all know this is an April Fools joke and you're playing off it or are you that silly? lol

  • +2

April fools aside, I can see why they picked the gc for this joke article, so very believable. It’s embarrassing after travelling in Japan coming here and seeing all the new unnecessarily (in most cases) large vehicles. It’s a point where people are reconsidering small cars as it’s not safe when you consider the high chance of collision with a much larger vehicle. I was at pacific fair over the weekend and people park landcruisers in the ‘small car only’ spots, and I guess relative to some others, that is a small car now. It really is a frightening combination with people (often young teenagers) using e-scooters, e-bikes and trail bikes interchangeably between footpaths, bike lanes and the road, that combined with the horrendous driving, I see something outrageous on the road most days that I leave the house. Stay safe Goldy!

  • In Melb there are no room for cars left and less park lots as the ex mayor converted them to bike lanes, extended tram lines etc. a big 4wd would not be able to fit. Driving speed is about 20kmh!
