Talk to Me about TVs

I bought a 75 inch Bravia TV KD75X9000H as part of the sale a couple of years ago 2021

I like that it has Google TV built in (no extra dongle - single remote) and the Full Array LED shadow colours are good for movies. We've always suffered from not being able to see anything in dark parts of movies from cheap TVs. Although sometimes playing from local network it seems the Chromecast 4K can play some files more smoothly.

had a lot of other problems though, after one update something broke and we had to get the whole main board replaced I think that was 2022. It took three visits because the first time they were checking and didn't have the part the second time the part they sent was actually the wrong main board and third time they swapped the main board.

Then later last year after an update the Wi-Fi would not work anymore. Basically if I was playing from a nas it would keep stopping and buffering. And then playing Amazon prime TV sometimes it stopped. And then later it wouldn't connect to the router at all. It's not too far away from the router and the signal is -65dBm. It had been there since 2021 and they had never been dropouts over Wi-Fi.

Plugging it into Ethernet everything was playing fine. But i need the ethernet for the Xbox.

Eventually I convinced them to come out and check it they brought out some things and we were testing the Wi-Fi. It took many tries in 10 minutes to connect to my router and also to the technicians mobile hotspot so clearly there's something wrong with it. The technician tried to convince me that if it works via Ethernet then there's nothing wrong with the Wi-Fi because it's 'network' and if I have any problems it must be my router.

anyway because we had no idea why it was not working he said will replace the main board again which he had on hand.

So afterwards reconfiguring my home network I found that the Ethernet Mac address had changed but the Wi-Fi Mac address was still the old one.

This suggests to me that he's using the same Wi-Fi module as before and that's why it still does not connect via Wi-Fi. What are your thoughts?

What can I ask for and/or what should I look for?

    • oh wow. I guess I won't expect it to be ever fixed then…

      • Read the thread very carefully and you find what you are looking for.

        • There was a thing about idle TV stand by which I don't have but I think it's now named turned off TV after. Mine is already set to 24 hours and I have the power saving already off. Also my TV is turned off at the men's every evening by our smart home system so when we turn it on it's only been on for minutes. These other people are saying they fix it by restarting their TV but our TV is already freshly started and we still get it.

What? Wtf you want to do that ? There are cleaner way of doing that instead of mains.

            • @boomramada: TV's already off. Just turn off all the mains when w/ sleep routine.
              Why not?

@furyou: But why? Some electronics dont like hard stop/start all the time.

@boomramada: saw it was dragging some watts on standby.
most days we don't use the TV until 5pm. So off from 12am-5pm.

Just add an external new Chromecast to get around the issue?

I have the same tv in 65 and got annoyed with the slowish wifi, slowish google interface etc.. adding a 4k Chromecast was an easy update to make the tv more usable

Just get a cheap gigabit ethernet switch. Sounds like that'll solve your problems.

    • Yes I'm just not sure about having a faulty TV and whether it should be remedied

You shouldn't expect the wifi or the chip behind the apps to offer a good experience on most TVs out there. If I were you I'd buy the Apple TV or a Shield like device, use ethernet on it, and run everything through that. Forget the TV apps altogether. The best part about this is when you get a new TV you don't need to learn their new UI and stuff, just plug in the device and everything is just how it was before. And small enough to take with you to hotels and such.

        • For me it's more the convenience of having one remote instead of switching to and from the Chromecast remote. Actually is the Chromecast 4K considered more powerful than something this TV would have?

Absolutelyz noticeable performance improvement over the inbuilt android tv in the Sony

@furyou: You'll find these devices work with your TV remote, and your TV remote will work with these devices. Probably out of the box, but if not then after just a few basic configurations. If you have an iPhone you can use your iPhone as a remote for Apple TV actually.

Agreed with this, if ethernet works and you only have 1 cable, buy a cheap $20-$30 gigabit switch to have more ethernet connections 1 for tv 1 for xbox. solved.

    • Agreed - get the switch and call it a day. Buy a cheap Chinese 4 port desktop or TP-Link make a nice metal 5 port with a decent warranty. Pay a bit extra but more chance it will perform better and last longer. Hide it behind the cabinet or TV itself. It is just not worth the aggravation. My rule is if it can be wired, do it. Not much can go wrong with a wire. Myriads of things can happen to degrade a WiFi signal and bandwidth.

  • Why not Ethernet to the tv and the xbox on wifi ?

  • yeah my sony tv has bad wifi but on ethernet its perfectly fine.

  • Yeah, sounds like another relatively “Sony product” issue. Defects that make you wonder how the product was designed.

The workaround would be a WiFi repeater with 1-2 gigabit Ethernet ports. Either the powerpoint models, or a USB-C powered mesh WiFi node that can sit behind the TV, and has 1-4 Ethernet ports to act as a switch and mesh repeater.

Some of the mesh systems like the TPLink deco and ASUS zen series have a relay/switch for input/output. I think some models are have wifi 6 as well as multiple Ethernet ports for relay and devices that need/prefer wiring up. Would need to check with your NBN router/service to see if it’s compatible.

Or EoP / AV2000 adapters to get Ethernet over power. They can have multiple downsides, so it’s better to try wiring Ethernet, unless you’re in a rental.

    • No need - he seems to indicate he already has 1 ethernet cable at the location. Grab a simple switch and bob's your uncle. Try and avoid WiFi repeaters like the plague - trust me. Only when no other choice.
