  • Can someone enlighten me on the difference between a heatpump vs condenser dryer?

I’m in the market for a washer and dryer combo but there isn’t many on the market that’s heatpump. Most are condenser. My concern is mould in the laundry because there we don’t have a window in the laundry.

The heatpump washer and dryer I see for sale is the price of a used Camry. Which is prohibitive.

There are three main kinds of electric dryer:

      Normal vented
      • Consumes as much energy as it puts into your sheets.
      • Draws up to 2.4kW, can heat up as hot as it likes inside.
      • Requires an external outlet vent or your going to end up with a mouldy humid laundry.
      • Your mum had one of these in the 80's.
      Condenser
      • Consumes as much energy as it puts into your sheets.
      • Draws up to 2.4kW, can heat up as hot as it likes inside.
      • Draws in "cool air" from your laundry over a condenser, which makes the humidty fall out of the hot outlet air.
      • Does not require an external vent, but does need to pump the water out (or will have a water bucket/drawer you need to empty).
      • Dries about as quick as a normal vented, if properly designed.
      • Costs a little more than normal vented, but you don't need to have a vent and push your air-conditioned air outside.
      Heat pump
      • Consumes less energy than it puts into your sheets.
      • Draws ~1kW, but probably generates double-triple that amount of heat - however it can't heat up above a temperature limited by the type of refridgerant gas used.
      • Choice says the gas is typicallyTetrafluoroethane, limits the heat to 75C output (less by the time it gets to your sheets).
      • Heats up your laundry less - literally pushes out cold air when running.
      • Dries your sheets slower due to limited maximum temperature, but takes less energy to do so.
      • This is fundamentally the tradeoff for heat-pump: higher complexity, higher cost, higher drying times vs lower running cost and better efficiency.
    • That's a good price for the black which is usually more expensive than white for this model! But after cashback this deal is $919 delivered, so $70 cheaper and not a factory second (and can be pricematched for an even better deal, whereas no-one is pricematching a factory second).

  • Condenser dryers are relatively inexpensive and have a simple structure, but they have high power consumption, longer drying time, and greater damage to clothes. Heat pump dryers have low power consumption, shorter drying time, and less damage to clothes, but they are relatively expensive and have a complex structure.

  • FYI Bosch dryer Series 6, price is only slightly higher: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/275968963331

    • I don't think the Bosch Series 6 has reverse tumbling which seems to be an issue for heat pump dryers effectively drying bedsheets (compared to conventional vented dryers). It also isn't eligible for the $100 cashback.

  • Apparently, they couldn't be mounted. I have an existing Fisher & Payckle Quicksmart washer in an apartment. Although it's an old model, I have been using it for years without problems.

I wonder which bracket/accessories to buy to put this on the washer {standard 600 width}. For a combo set of Miele, I noticed it comes with the accessory. I wonder how to check the compatibility when the washer & dryer are of different brands.
