[Resolved] Help identifying a song please

I want to identify a song I heard while I was on hold to Rex Airline.

Soft piano going in the background, not quite arpeggios but very repetitive, rhythmic and soothing, the piano track is kind of 'lilting'.

The only phrase I definitely heard (and it was repeated a lot) was 'I'll make my way, home … back to you'.

The lyrics are sung by a sad and tired sounding man who sings in tune, but does not have what would classically be termed a 'good voice'. It's not pure at all like a well practiced/trained singer, nor is it 'awesome and forthright in its rawness' like so many legendary blues singers, and a few others others like Joe Cocker and Tom Waites.

This guy sounds more like Iggy Pop, or Nick Cave, someone like that. Sad and woeful, sometime almost talking rather than singing; yet oddly very relaxing, and the song as a whole is really calming to listen too. Perfect music to put peeps 'on hold' with I guess!

Anyways, if anyone knows what this tune is, I would dearly like to know. Of course I've tried the usual Googling strategies etc., but the main problem is the only definite lyrics I have are used in about a million different songs. I don't think it's possible to 'Google' the answer based on what I know about the song. I think that only someone who knows the tune will be able to tell me what it is. If it helps I have never heard it before, and I've been a muso for 40 years; so I'm thinking its either some sort of 'undiscovered classic, or (more likely) it was created in the last couple of years or so.

Call Rex Airlines again. You are guaranteed to be put on hold. Hopefully they will play the same song. Put it on speaker.

Hey Google/Siri, what song is this?

Is this it? - Tom Rosenthal

Main song line is I'm making my way home, Google this you get the song above.

    • Ah Muzza, thank you so very kindly, you are truly a legend. This is the tune, though I was hearing a longer version of it with more instrumental stuff and less vocals while on hold to 'Rex'.

My problem re 'identifying it' was evidently that on my crap phone I misinterpreted every second word of the lyrics (accent didn't help) … thus my searches were fruitless! So grateful Muz, thank you!

Re 'calling Rex again' I had decided to do just that when they reopened tomozza … and demand not to be attended to, and instead to be put to the back of the queue and put back on hold … for as long as it took. But you have saved me that embarrassment Muzwix, love you man, thanks.

    • Lol that was the first song that popped up when I typed those words into google, but I thought surely OP tried to search and it wouldn't be…

    • He sounds like Flight of the Concords doing their Davie Bowie songs

  • Likely to be something loyalty free but I have no idea how to find the source.

    • Muzeeb solved my little mystery.

    Already linked, but fwiw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VePaI3jX4Sk

Otherwise, your best bet is to get on hold again and install Shazam https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shazam.and…

Thank you FluffyFish, you are of course correct. Muzzer beat you to it, but I appreciate your communication/knowledge/intuition nonetheless …

I absolutely love this website sometimes …

      (but not all the time)

  • Chat GPT suggests:

    Home" by Michael Kiwanuka: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ4s3G7hgR4
"Home" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHEOF_rcND8
    "Home" by Passenger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAYZmIfHEiU
    "Home" by Johnnyswim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpFVyqfdn9s

That third one is the only one with piano and the vibe you describe. This is me now, not Chat btw.

    • Nah, nah, nah …

These dudes in your vids can all sing in the 'traditional' sense.

The tune I'm looking for features a singer who really can't; but somehow carries the 'tune' perfectly nonetheless. Think Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, maybe 'Leonard Cowen (going back aways), Bob Dylan (though the guy in my song is much more Iggy and Nick, than Bob) …

      EDIT:

Muzza and FluffyFish solved it for me :) Love those guys …

  • You can sing into Shazam btw.

    • What about playing piano into Shazam … is it any good at recognising that?

As described above the vocals would be quite hard to emulate (to the level of 'digital recognition') because they are quite unique, but I would have a decent shot at the piano … but the memory of the exact notes is fading/blurring a bit now, after listening to numerous 'that's ALMOST it' tracks … lol

      EDIT:

Muzza and FluffyFish solved it for me :) Love those guys …

      • Try playing piano into Shazam. If it says you can hum a tune into it then piano would probably work even better.

I work for REX and can confirm we only use live artists for all on hold music, and they are only permitted to perform original music.

Can you hum it for us

    • Why? It’s already been solved.

joka just wants to hear OP's beautiful voice

        • You jest, but in fact I have been told that I do actually have one of those … and I was a member of the MSO chorus for a decade or so, which is 'objective evidence' of said assertion. I'd urge any muso who can sight-read a melody, lives in Melbourne, and has a lot of spare time to try out for the MSO chorus. Being part of that mob was by far the most fun musical endeavour I was ever involved with … and there have been many.

  • lyrics are sung by a sad and tired sounding man

He just sounds like he’s from England…

  • Personally I think his tone goes a bit beyond merely being 'from England' in this song, and I reckon you might be missing something.

Anyways, happy trails amigo (or, 'guv'?)
