The North Face Base Camp Duffle Medium Black - $150 Shipped, RRP $280 - Save $130

Strictly limited stock. Free shipping & free returns within 100 days subject to returns policy.

The North Face Medium Base Camp Duffle 71L is hailed as the king of heavy-duty duffles, and for good reason. It's a legendary classic that has been around for over 30 years with little changes since its inception. This is the Medium Base Camp Duffle, the 71-liter version. Made from a highly durable, 'bomb-proof' 1000D TPE fabric laminate that is phthalate-free and reinforced with a beastly 1680D junior ballistic nylon base, the Medium Base Camp Duffle will protect your gear from abrasion, stretching, drops, and falls and keep it dry from the wet elements too. It's a bag that's amply resilient to be roughed around in-flight or to be transported up the alps via a mountain yak. The medium size is suitable for a week's stay.

  • After going to Vietnam and seeing the exact same bags on the shelves for 30 to 50$ i just can't see these discounts the same. Same quality and everything, probably just direct from the factory.

that's why we made you a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rJ68GjABB4

    • +1

it's certainly not direct from the factory lol.

    • yep and that $25 goretex TNF jacket is definitely the same quality as the $400 genuine one…

      • -1

It does actually, as an ozbargain member you're just gonna have to trust me when I say i looked at it pretty closely. Actually use one of the bags for work everyday and wear the tshirts daily. Great quality straight from the source

  • -3

This: "highly durable, 'bomb-proof' 1000D TPE fabric laminate that is phthalate-free and reinforced with a beastly 1680D junior ballistic nylon base" is military grade nonsense…

    • +4

      where's the nonsense? It's 1000D TPE with a 1680D ballistic nylon base.

        • +16

1680D Ballistic Nylon is the actual name of the material, these specific details are pretty important once you ask for any kind of decent money for a bag.

Kind of like how a 3070 is just a GPU but if you just said posted a PC deal here saying it had a 'processor' and a 'graphics card' people here are going to be asking which ones.

          • +1

            @eecan: what eecan said.

          • +4

@eecan: Yep, plastics ain't plastics Sol. TPE is extremely hard wearing and 1680D ballistic nylon actually has its roots in military applications.

This is much lighter and likely "stronger" than my Denali Expedition III duffle ($45 on special a few months ago) but you pay big dollars for the diff.

        • -1

That's plastic. It's a plastic bag. That's what it is. "Ballistic grade" "bomb proof" this is marketing, not needed.

You know that milk cartons and military ballistic shields are both made of 'plastic', right?

    • +1

      from some random website

      https://alexkwa.com/the-definitive-guide-to-ballistic-nylon/

Its origins go all the way back to the Vietnam war where it was made by DuPont for exclusively military applications. It was originally developed as an anti-fragmentation ballistic jackets for the military, which is where the term “ballistic” come from.

It consisted of multiple layers of the fabric laminated together to help to protect the military from these explosive devices. But as it turns out, while it's great for deflecting minor shrapnel and debris, not so much so for bullets

      further down

      1680d
While a larger denier count might sound like it's a better fabric, 1680d is woven from a large single yarn, rather than two plies of 1050d. This gives the appearance of a two-ply fabric, but actually ages poorer and fuzzes out at abrasion points. It's not surprising that the 1680d is mostly made in Asia at half the cost of the 1050d.

      • 1680 ballistic nylon is usually either 2x2 or 2x3 weave.

I paid $135 in 2021 and use it a lot. On the weekend had it on top of a kayak for an overnight trip and everything stayed dry even though it got a lot of splash.

    • they are very handy bags tbh.

Turn off ABC and get some sunlight champ

        • Too much sunlight fades the curtains Rowan, I'm sure you learnt that from your Murdoch spoonfeed. I turned off 4Corners years ago. Is that enough, or should I also miss out on probably the best radio there is and give Conversations a miss also?

          • +1

@Igaf: The good thing about creating a venn diagram to contrast A) people who namedrop Murdoch way too often and B) those who have empty, resentful lives it that you only need one circle.

            • @pharcyde: That circle would presumably be a null set in your case Rowan, albeit an extremely fertile circle just waiting to be populated with whatever vacuity the wind might drop?

              • +1

@Igaf: I eagerly await your 4th edit to your post and see just how this circles back to either Sky News, Trump or Murdoch.

                • -1

@pharcyde: Why wait, just look in the mirror and you'll have your answer. Interesting oxymoron in that first example don't you think?

      • +1

You got it. Every North Face post, I'll return with the same anti-Dan sentiment. Lock it in!

        • -1

Can't wait. I guess if it helps It's not a bad thing although professionals would probably suggest that holding on so tight that you could cut washers from your sphincter is somewhat extreme.

Question - I can understand that you might loathe partocular public figures (there's a huge list to pick from) but why do you hold North Face responsible for the actions of a former politician?

          • @Igaf: I don't hold them responsible but he's damaged their brand reprehensibly. If I were North Face I would have issued him with a cease and desist to stop him wearing their brand to his press conferences every day during lockdown.

Maybe they sold more jackets thanks to him, I dunno. But personally North Face = Dan's face.

            • @WalkingClock: I see. For YOU he's damaged the brand. Was it just lockdown or a general loathing for his actions as a political leader which hurts?

As I said, I understand the sentiment, but in the cool light of post-pandemic day you dont think that reaction's more than a tad extreme?

    • -1

That would make you a snowflake.

Do you offer a further 20% off if we complete a DIE course?

    • thank you. Enjoy!

  • I need 1 replacement strap!?

  • These are made in Vietnam?

    • +1

Generally most TNF gear would be made in Vietnam. Some are now being made in some other countries also.

    • +7

also. love your work in the Mission Impossible series.

    • +12

tbh i think you can afford full price.

      • +1

Have you seen the prices of those Scientology courses? 🤣

        • +1

fair call. Tom can get the discount.

  • Great price, I've had my Medium for 4 years now and still looks brand new. I love everything about the bag… except the zipper to the main compartment. Always so hard to open/close on the corners.

  • -2

    $150 for a duffel bag, not in a million years. Here's a bigger Samsonite for $55. https://www.samsonite.com.au/tote-a-ton/tote-85-33-w-ctn/ss-…

    • +3

i would pay 100$ to not have such a hideous bag

      • I'd pay an extra $100 for a bag that's not designed to explode the first time it's overpacked and thrown onto a luggage carousel. Which that Samsonite will, with the zipper that runs all the way along the top and the two ends.

        • You've been observing Australian baggage handlers then?

          • @Igaf: I don't think it'd even take a baggage handler to destroy that Samsonite- did you check out the link? It's terrible. I'm surprised they put a 2 year warranty on it, but I guess it's designed to carry tennis racquets.

  • I haven't used the medium, but I have the large, and be aware of a two main things:

Where the backpack straps are sewn onto the bag, are not overly strong. They will break quickly and easily under load if you don't get them reinforced after you buy it. Go to any cobbler/shoe repair place, and they can do this quickly and cheaply for you.

Also, to remove the backpack straps for using as checking-in luggage is a pain in the ass. The Fourth Element duffle is much better (it has buckles to quick release the straps) and overall lighter than the North Face equivalent - but their stitching is even weaker and worse.

Second thing is like ddxsamx said - the zipper is difficult to open/close on the corners. It's fine, not awful, just be aware it's not silky smooth like some others you may be used to.

I've had the XXL and the XL, not had these problems with either fully loaded, sometimes past 25kg. Never used them for long though as they are not comfortable- just long enough to maybe get out of a hotel room to toss into a car. The XXL was bought early 2000s, the XL was bought around 2015. The reinforcement doesn't sound like a bad idea at all, but it's not been an issue on my bags.

I have never bothered to fully remove the backpack straps (frankly didn't even realise this was possible). I just cinch the shoulder straps down tight, tie away the excess webbing, then put the lot under the hand-carry strap.

      • Yeah, the Large (90L), with only short distances… lasted about a month or so maybe.

Better than Fourth Element 120L bag, where both I had ripped apart almost instantly (the second was a replacement from the company).

re: fully removing: it just weaves through the plastic. It's no big deal, it's what you're supposed to do so that the baggage tossers don't grab the bag by those straps, or so they don't get tangled/caught in a conveyer belt - which is more a risk when you sinch them tightly, and there's a lot of loose strap. I put a luggage strap around my bag usually because I couldn't be bothered taking the straps off, to protect it.

Given that airports/airlines using luggage tubs seem to be more standard than they used to be, it's likely less of an issue.

        • or so they don't get tangled/caught in a conveyer belt - which is more a risk when you sinch them tightly, and there's a lot of loose strap. I put a luggage strap around my bag usually because I couldn't be bothered taking the straps off, to protect it.

Cinch the shoulder straps tight so there is lots of loose strap, then take the loose webbing and tie across the body of the duffel. Then there is no dangling webbing to get caught in luggage carousels.

I've been doing with with TNF and other brand duffels for two decades, never had a problem with baggage handlers or carousels. Sometimes the bag ends up in a tub, sometimes not.
