Cheap Place to Put Lenses in Existing Frames

I just had an eye test and my prescription has changed a lot and I will need to update my glasses.

Given that my old glasses i like and they are in very good condition I thought I'd just put new lenses in them but OPSM quoted me $390 for relatively basic single lenses to be put in my current frames.

Does anyone know a cheaper play that will do this either online or in person?

    In person, Costco

Just get all new ones from Bailey Nelson or Oscar Wylee for less, they will have similar designs.

  • Nearly always cheaper to get a new complete set. Unfortunately that is just the business model of optometrists these days. Most also outsource the process as well to maximise profits.

The optometrist is better off being stuck in a room with a client and claiming their Medicare benefits and outsourcing the traditional services.

Search for reglazing glasses and you'll find plenty of options. The modern eyewear production process is optimised for putting new lenses into new high margin frames so the big players don't do it cheaply, hoping to deter you.

  • Also, dont forget some frames actually need reheating to fit the lenses properly so after a few times they do wear out.

I ordered a pair of glasses from Bailey Nelson and they screwed up the prescription twice and they decided to just order me a fresh new pair of glasses and frame (instead of just reordering the lenses) on the 2nd return as they deemed the frames wont be in good condition after multiple refitting.

  • I walked into Specsavers and they did it for nothing on the spot. Mind you I just broke a frame and had a spare.

    Shop around.

    • What prescription was it?

Cause mine, with astigmatism, the focus is all over the place

      • Honestly I have no idea what mine are but they were sunnies at the time. Worth asking them.

        • As in no prescription? Then its a different case altogether

  • Cheers for all the replies.

I'd really liked my old frames and they are still like new so that had been my reason for wanting to reuse them. I'd also preferred an online store I could just main them to and know what i was getting. I see so many choices online but OPSM really gave me no choices and just said $390.

Does seem a few places appear under "reglazing glasses" that will be it at a reasonable cost and my first quote was just a bit crazy and not somewhere you would go for a relense.

    • Opsm has been owned since 2003 by the same multinational company that makes many famous brands including Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Vogue Eyewear, Versace, Michael Kors, Prada, Coach, Ralph Lauren, Armani, and Dolce & Gabbana.
The same company owns LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, and Sunglass Hut and eyewear insurance company EyeMed.

It’s in the business of selling frames at a high mark up to people with health insurance in shopping centres.
You’d be better off looking for an independent optician on the main road. Or online posting them away. $90 https://www.visiondirect.com.au/designer-eyeglasses/Reglazin…

      • OPSM was really just my first visit, cause I was in a shopping mall, but now I'm trying to narrow it down to my best/cheapest option to mail them in.

I'll narrow it down from places like vision direct, which you linked, or a few other places also looked good when I searched "reglazing glasses". I'd like to just post them in and have it done.
