@bargainhunter: Someone should write a browser plugin that changes any occurrence of "would of" to "would have". If I knew how to code, I would.

The long advertisements on SBS are really annoying. Does ABC have them as well?

      • +14

        ABC is ad free.

        • Never knew that was true on iview. (Assumed it was like the rest of the streamers). This is enough to convince me to give it a go. Ta.

          • @fantombloo: ABC doesn't have ads for live tv and steaming (other then their own stuff), the down is that you only get 720p and under. no FHD.

            • @Tollery: this is the main drawback of abc iView…
it's very strange that they don't offer an acceptable higher quality … in this day and age. |

SBS, and many of the other free-to-air's do broadcast in 1080p on the web

              • @mutantx: I've always found shows in 720p on SBS, even shows that are not HD are marked as HD. ABC Iview needs to be in full HD and start to plan UHD content if they want people to use it more.

        • -7

ABC is full of advertising, it's just advertising their own stuff though, as no one is interested in buying advertising time from them.

Their advertising runs in the middle of their shows and they also cut shows off early to run self-advertising too.

          • +1

            @infinite:

Their advertising runs in the middle of their shows

Only ABC news 24 does this every hour as a brake.

as no one is interested in buying advertising time from them

" As a public broadcaster, we do not accept or carry advertising." and also "In accordance with the ABC Act, all content on ABC platforms and services is advertisement free"

it's just advertising their own stuff though

Yeah…. that can get super annoying!

      • -7

Sbs used to be ad free until the world cup or olympics one year, they demanded to be allowed to have ads to recoup their money…. so just another scam

        • +6

SBS has had ads for the last 33 years, and they only have to increase them because the government funds them with the smell of an oily rag

          • @Gorby: Except what i wrote was true. In 2006 they requested a change to the sbs act,
            https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Bills_Legislat…
They had the world cup and wanted to run ads during matches. Which wasnt possible before 2006.

            • @Rrppper: That's absolutely not what you said

              • @Gorby: They never run normal ads before or after shows before, it was all sbs promotions. Not coke or fanta. This changed in 2006. With the world cup. Now they run proper ads before, during , after and its all ads not just ads for their own shows

                • -1

@Rrppper: Again, that is not true, they ran paid advertisements in between programs since 1991. But keep changing positions to pretend you were right by all means

                  • -4

@Gorby: You can literally read the llaw lmao
                    Rtarded

                    • -1

                      @Rrppper: Hey dickhe@d.

This is you: "Sbs used to be ad free until the world cup or olympics one year, they demanded to be allowed to have ads to recoup their money"

And this is SBS: "In 1991 SBS is established as a corporation with five minutes of advertising or sponsorship per hour allowed, but only between programs or in natural program breaks. SBS chose at that time only to screen ads at the end of programs"

                      https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/a-brief-history-of-sbs/5…

Now f.uck off back to your hole.

SBS ads have ruined it for me I can't watch it. It's a real shame.

        • +1

I tuned into SBS food and there was this show from the 90's and using old measurements, ads every 6 minutes, for real, every 6 minutes.

          • +6

@Tollery: That’s what happens when you’ve had a liberal government for a decade. They balance the economy by reducing services. It’s also why the current Centrelink increase isn’t enough, it’s not been increased sufficiently before the current one.

    • I just had a look and they have a great movie collection. It's almost like another mainstream streaming platform.
      https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/movies

    • -1

It’s only 720p though. All AU FTA services stream in 1280x720. They are all to tight to store them in 1080p or 1080i depending whether it’s a film or from a studio.

Films are broadcast in 25fps which affects the sound, changes the pitch by 4% because no AU FTA service will stream a film in 23.976.

Most people probably don’t care, however I do. If someone grabs the file from yt-dlp.exe you can probably confirm this yourself. I’m not going to give instructions on how to use that program on iview suffice to say, it usually involves a complicated command line and violates iView Terms of Service.

If I’m wrong and iview actually switches from 25fps to 23.976fps then you are good to go.

      But that’s not my understanding.

Commercial Streaming services change the frame rate to match the content. However they are designed to do that, and add HDR or Dolby Vision. Also it’s only in 2.0 AAC audio because no AU FTA streamer or broadcaster provides 5.1 audio even though they could if they wanted to.

Just saying for anyone who cares.

      • dman1 on 23/03/2024 - 20:33

        Calling you out on this.

It sounds like you don't have any idea what you are saying. You obviously have no idea why Iview and other television streaming services do what they do. The pitch change in audio you make is absurd, you are showing your complete ignorance and understanding of such matters.

Television streaming services operate to a standard and do not change frame rates to "match the content" outside the standard applicable to this country. You need to stop posting stupid posts.

    • SBS will show ads during the movie yeah?

We really are suckers to be paying for so many streaming services.

    • +2

I think that's the point of the current ABC ads. Of course we already pay via taxes.

      • current ABC ad

        ?

        • I saw a banner ad near my local train station for ABC iview. First time I've seen physical ads for abc tbh.

        • +2

Watch ABC each day and you'll see them . Ads for ABC on ABC. is still an AD

Just like they are on commercial TV.

They even cut away from live broadscasts/announcements to run these station promo's (Ads)

          • @RockyRaccoon: how bloody annoying.

I know the crap they have at the start of shows in iview which is why I rip anything longer then Media Watch

        • Seen quite a few on YouTube.

          • +1

@fraxinus: ah happy to pay the $3.50/mth for all of us not to have ads.

          current ABC ad ?

3 ads in ABC campaign promoting iView
ABC IVIEW’S NEW CAMPAIGN ASKS ‘WHICH STREAMER WILL YOU UNSUBSCRIBE FROM?’

          • @INFIDEL: cheers, interesting. I suspect that'll cause the Murdoch maulers too have a hissy fit about wasting taxpayer money.

      • ABC struck gold with co-funding Bluey. We should be funding the ABC more so they can pay for the next Bluey and sell it to the world for $$$.

  • +5

My pick of that bunch is Tracks. But Her is exceedingly topical and might get a re-watch.

    • +5

Her is excellent, and an unofficial reply to Lost in Translation.

    • Her (2013)

I watched this a few weeks ago. Highly recommend. Although, it is in no way a comedy. I have no idea why the A B friggin C labeled it as such. Check out the promo trailer on YouTube. I also recommend re-watching that trailer right after watching the movie. You will know why when you do. :)

  • +5

Unfortunately the low bitrate of iView makes watching kino unbearable fir my superiour visual pallete.

    • +28

As compared to your subpar spelling palate.

      • -5

Palette is related to art and pertains to colors and painting.
Palate is connected to our mouth and taste, both literally and metaphorically.
Pallet is linked to logistics and denotes a platform for goods transportation.

Maybe you are right if looking down someone/things throat. Otherwise pallete would be more appropriate for something visual

My guess having a superior with u, would be sub par spelling

Actually I think you'll find the subtle hiss and grain adds a certain je ne sais quoi' to the classics, like a worn out film projector.

I wouldn't expect peasants to understand of course.

      • +1

How are your LPs coming along?

        • +6

I rub them with sandpaper for that vintage sound.

      • Maybe if it was hiss and grain, but it's digital artefacts and they've never been in style

ABC, the last Frontier for quality and common sense entertainment.

  • +4

If you want a fantastic movie, look up one called ‘Terminator 2’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    • +16

Is that the documentary about the machines becoming self aware with AI and taking over?

      • +1

Yep and I think the historian, Nostradamus, wrote the script. I doubt anyone could have predicted that that movie would be such a success.

    • Schwarzenegger.

I don't like foreign films, sorry.

  • +3

unpopular opinion but is listing movies from an app that's been free forever really a deal?
Not trying to be rude but just curious.

    • +16

Not really free forever as the catalogue changes every few weeks. I think it's a good reminder that there is some good entertainment available for free.

    • +4

Probably needs a [SUBS] tag, but I think the post is still worthwhile. Let the upvotes decide.

      • +1

You could make the same argument for anything “free”.

Gmail isn’t free, it’s funded by advertising dollars.

      • +2

Crap? ABC has Bluey - checkmate.

Great kids stuff makes it worthwhile alone.

        • -3

Bluey is licensed to other networks and streaming services besides the ABC.

Outside of Bluey, a lot of the kids programming on the ABC has unnecessary ideology-pushing crap in it, so it's really something you want for your kids.

  • +8

    Worth adding Spotlight (2015).

It would be the highest rated on the list.

    • +1

Great film. Watch though the text in the end credits.

    • Of course! It's weird Spotlight is on the app but not in the list when you see all movies under 'Movies A-Z'. I will add. Thanks

    • I had that one on my watchlist for a long time as it was highly anticipated and critically rated… as you said, the highest rated on the list…
It turned out to be an incredibly boring film , maybe it was the style that the director used, you had to be up with the lingo of the newspaper industry… and some plain stupid decisions like calling the head cardinal "Law" , which made the dialogue even harder to follow, because they keep referring to "Law" instead of "Cardinal Law" or just changing his name (you know it's their right as script-writers to change certain things), to a name which is less ambiguous.
I put this one up there with "The Good Shepherd" as one of the biggest let-downs of all time.
      Sorry.

  • +1

How's the streaming quality compared to other network streaming services (now and 7plus)? About the same? Never used abc iview before

    • +1

I was just about to ask the same question…

Does iView support 1080p HD streaming yet?

      • No and not even SBS.

      • -1

No and most of it is 1280x720 in 25fps so the audio is pitched up by 4% if it’s a movie.

If it’s ABC content then it was probably recorded in 25fps 1080i

Also Australia rarely even broadcasts 5.1 audio. Most of it is 2.0 AAC

Having said that iPlayer for BBC only provides 2.0 audio and NZ streaming for FTA is mostly 2.0 audio as well.

        • in 25fps so the audio is pitched up by 4% if it’s a movie

I don't think this is how it works in digital.

          • +1

            @pizzaguy: pizzaguy
            You are right, it doesn't.
