On-Road Costs Now Included in RRP of MG4 & MG ZS EV (Save between $1297- $10,084) @ MG

231

MG motors have reversed a decision implemented at the start of 2023 which saw drive-away prices of its electric cars vary based on differing government charges in each state and territory – rather than offer one price applicable nationwide, as with petrol and hybrid MG models. In effect from Friday 22 March 2024, the drive-away prices for the MG 4 and ZS EV now either match their previous RRPs – meaning on-road costs have been wiped.

2024 MG 4 price in Australia (from 22 March 2024)
MG 4 Excite 51 – $39,990 drive-away (previous RRP $39,990)
MG 4 Excite 64 – $44,990 drive-away (previous RRP $44,990)
MG 4 Essence 64 – $46,990 drive-away (previous RRP $47,990)
MG 4 Long Range 77 – $52,990 drive-away (previous RRP $55,990)

2024 MG ZS EV price in Australia (from 22 March 2024)
ZS EV Excite – $39,990 drive-away (previous RRP $41,990)
ZS EV Essence – $42,990 drive-away (previous RRP $44,990)
ZS EV Long Range – $46,990 drive-away (previous RRP $51,990)
MG 4 XPower – $59,990 drive-away (previous RRP $59,990)

  • This on a lease would be very attractive.

    • +1

      why it will be attractive?

      • +3

Novated leases on EVs are FBT exempt so you can use your pre-tax earnings to pay for them

        • i thought majority agree that novated lease == rip off https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/836836 ?

          • +1

            @pembajak_sejati: ozb ≠ financial advice

          • +2

@pembajak_sejati: Do your own calcs, novated leases don't work for all situations but I've had a couple and been happy with the end result.

To ensure things go my way I always do my own calcs as their "savings" figures are vastly inflated, I pay for the insurance, replacements parts etc before asking for reimbursement as getting it through the novated lease company is always more expensive.

I also don't buy their additional insurances and nail them down on interest rate charge and the percentage that they add on the amount financed as their fee, it is usually 7.5%-10% of the purchase price but I generally get it down to 2.5%.

Loving my EV which is fully paid from pre tax dollars since I don't do alot of work travel and would have had to use the statutory formula for an ICE car.

          • @pembajak_sejati: They are as the comparison rates are around 10% or higher.

But depending on your financial situation it's could still be better than buying outright.

I put a $48k atto 3 on lease and after doing the maths on a 3 year lease, I'd be paying the same amount as I would outright. Plus I get to keep my money in the bank at interest and all my running expenses are discounted at my personal tax rate.

I managed to double dip on the NSW grant too

          • @pembajak_sejati: This comment is a good balanced view on things. The included spreadsheet is also very handy.

What iampoor said above also stands true.

      • I'm keen to know too

With lease you are paying interest plus fees for the leasing company. Unless your investment rate of return is higher than the leasing interest plus fees, I couldn't see any benefits in leasing a vehicle.

Or perhaps a business owner while money is best invested back into the business

        • Fees for my company (smart salary) is $1 a week.

You have to remember, the lease/expenses you pay are all pre-tax with no fbt liability (due to ev scheme).

          • @krisspy: $1 a week but how high is their interest rate?

            • @CheapBrah: Like I said above it's pretty high, but still works in my favor in the end.

Just for Eg. Im on a 3 year lease. 37% tax, 2% medicare
My lease repayment is $519 per fortnight (pre-tax)
              Residual is 23100 including gst.

Pretty much around $47,797 for a $48081 retail car. This is excluding running costs which I would get a discount on too (39% rate).

Even without investing that $23100 I got saved for the residual, I'm already ahead vs purchasing outright, let alone getting a silly loan that's gonna cost an extra 3k a year.

    • IIRC that's exactly what Top Gear mag said about the MG4

      • i mean on a lease vs cash outright.. nvm answered above

  • I was at BYD on Wednesday and I was offered $3500 cash back for ATTO 3.

    • not bad, I got only $2023. What the the extra for?

      • That cashback is sooo last year…

    • +3

because those cars don't move by themselves? #cough like the one at westfield liverpool? =P

  • +1

Monthly sales plummeting. Gotta discount them hard to sell them.

  • +3

Can't convince Missus to buy MG or BYD…..

    • +5

same.. no panda car even though me a panda

      • LOL!

        Thanks for the laugh!

Great to see humour still alive and kicking, despite the best efforts of the offencerati.

        • Who the fu•k would be offended by that comment?

  • Which one/s have the $10k saving? I might be dumb here, but none of your examples are any where near the $10k off mark?

    • +1

ZS EV Long Range bought in WA.

  • 60K for a 0-100 in 3.8s? damn cheap

i know there would likely be more engineering, better materials, more luxury, more badge snobbery, that comes with the polestar 4. different target market but… the xforce is half the price!!!

    • +1

The Xforce also isn't the one to buy. Straight line numbers don't tell the full story etc.

It’s very quick and easy to drive. And if all you want is the speed of a Mercedes-AMG A45 with none of the noise, involvement and dynamism, then by all means go for it. But this is a toe in the water from MG. Visually the upgrades are very muted, inside coloured stitching is literally the only change. It’s neither crisp nor engaging to drive. And that might be exactly what you’re looking for. After all, a 429bhp electric hatch that’s cheaper than a base VW ID.3 has to be tempting.

      • +1

I wouldn't bother, even with the Essence traffic light wars are hard to lose. Wouldn't pay more for some cosmetic changes and a more powerful motor.

      • +1

yeah agree, i would hope the general population don't buy the xforce and expect it to be the same as/on par with an amg! call it brand snobbery, but i would find it insulting to mention xforce in the same sentence as amg ;p

        interesting verdict in that article:

But when you dig into what it does for the money, how high it scores on multiple levels, it’s probably the only car in the class to recommend. It’s got range, charging, equipment, zippy dynamics and now some style. Okay, so that last bit is entirely subjective, but in a world where electric cars always feel like marginal value, the MG4 does not. It’s a wake-up call to mainstream manufacturers

  • these EVs need to reach at least price parity to ices to really attract everyone and not just tech nerds (I'm one of them). there are just too many inconveniences, slow to refuel, less range, shit charging infrastructure and the cherry on top is the high price tag. Maintenance/service is really cheap, until it isn't and it gets very expensive very quick….battery replacement 20-30k…you could service an ice car for decades.

    • +1

EVs cost about 1/10th vs petrol cars to fuel if you're not a muppet about it. (Off peak tarrifs less than 20c/kWh) And you charge up at home, at night. So no waiting or fuel station visits.

Bang for buck they're already on par. Numerous EVs are already in the $30s k.

On batteries, LFP batteries have a ~ 5000 cycle lifespan. So, multiply that by say 400km per charge and that should give you an idea on how long a MODERN ev battery should last.

And EV batteries have the most ideal environment to work in - unlike say solar batteries. Most EVs would only do a full charge or parts thereof about once per week, AND they have active temperature management. Solar LFP batteries in the other hand are cycled daily and the vast majority have no active Temp management.

I think the Chinese brands are priced fairly depending on how you look at it.

A new golf gti with all the fruits is like 60k nowadays? 75k for the R.

This would clap both those cheeks in a straight line (maybe not a stage 2 golf R iirc they do 0-100 in 3.6). Don't expect a hot hatch though, alot of money needs to be thrown in to make an 1800kg hatch dance.

Atto 3 is around $48k vs a kona n line which is around 48k aswell.

Unless you don't have a driveway or do more than 100km a day or go on long drives frequently I don't think range anxiety is gonna be a problem, simply plug in every night would do the job.

If you have access to novated leasing then you basically get a free loan on the car too.

    • slow to refuel, less range, shit charging infrastructure

wot ? for the vast majority of city users they can just be plugged into a GPO in the garage and be topped up the next morning. Something like 80% of trips for city dwellers are 20-30km a day, this is convenience ICE car users can only dream of. If it sits at home through much of the day and you have solar, even better.

  • still too much babysitting. charging at home is definitely the way to go, but you would need your own garage to do that. Look at all those on street parking cars, where do they charge their cars?
The most expensive part that actually degrades the most, the battery, is non replaceable, until you can easily swap defective cells, like you already can on any eskate or ebike, not the whole battery pack, I don't see the everyday Joe swap to EV.
But I appreciate all the early adopters so I can have a better, cheaper product in the future.

  • Based on my horrible personal experience with MG, i would personally avoid this brand.

Luckily i can get off and ask for full refund my MG ZS EV after 8 months used..

    Bad built quality..

    • oh please elaborate, i am considering one but happy to hear the horror stories.

      • +1

Bought mg zs ev back end of 2022 for $50k. Hardly drive it, only for 7000kms after 8months.
Then suddenly stop working, lucky was parking in the shopping centre.

It can be turn on, but there is a sign warning about safety battery (god knows what is it)
Towed to werribee MG. Being told that small battery is faulty..waitinf for 1 month for parts to come. After that still not fixed, being told part b not working..waiting for parts to be order for 2 months..

It is amusing how they cant give estimated time and where the parts coming from (is it locally, is it from china, from US)..

Ended up i gave up and ask for fully refund as i believed it is not saved to drive this car (it could be happened in the middle of the road while im driving with my kids).

It was horrible experience. For me spending 50k, i did not expect this to happen.

I do not recommend to buy anything from weribee MG, as the sales wont give any respond if you raise a concern/complain with them.

But again, this is just my personal experience with them. And it took me 6 months to get my full refund..

        • Thanks for sharing.

Was it very hard getting your full refund too?

          • @cloudy: Not easy, have to write formal complain letter to weribee and threatened them so they take serious on my case.
After several attempt, no success..then i sent email to MG AU regarding this matter and explain to them that i will give honest review about my experience (which will give bad publicity and will lose potential customer like i do right now 😁). A week later i got my email back from MG that they will give fully refund..

Abit hassle, and whoever i told my friend about my complaint and asking for refund..they laugh at me..🙃.

I was lucky that i be able to get out from that situation.

Does it include fire hydrant install?

  • Was looking at leasing the Tesla Y as we need a bigger car after having our first child. The Long Range zs ev is almost 20k cheaper now. Model y is much more spacious with better tech but is it $20k better?

    • The MG ZS is a dog of a car, do not recommend. Big and floaty, cheap and nasty interior. MG4 is much better and newer generation, but not an SUV like you want.

  • BYD > MG

A woman has recounted a “frightening” experience with her brand new Chinese-made hybrid SUV that saw her electronic brakes and steering fail metres from a busy intersection shortly after driving the car off the lot.

But the dealer and the manufacturer have refused to refund the car, even after a second battery failure nine days later, insisting tests could find “no fault” with the MG HS+ Essence and that it “should be safe to drive”.

  • ZS EV prices have gone up today and are now different in each state.
ZS EV Excite 51 was $39,990 yesterday, $42,186 (in QLD) today.
