Are These Red Wines from Vintage Cellars Worth a Buy? (No Info on Them)

I was looking to buy my mother some wines for her birthday and came across these 2 interesting wine listings from vintage cellars with very little to no info on them and not being a wine drinker I am some what ignorant when it comes to wine.

First one is Unearthed Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 750mL:

https://www.vintagecellars.com.au/red-wine/unearthed-coonawa…

The second one is a combination with other wines containing: 1 x Unearthed South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 750mL. 3 x Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 750mL. 1 x Unearthed Limited Block Release 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. 1 x Unearthed McLaren Vale 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon 750mL.

https://www.vintagecellars.com.au/red-wine/iconic-wynns-unea…

I am considering buying the second listing as it seems like it's good value but any feedback or heads up would be much appreciated as I have no clue with wines.

EDIT: Turns out the Bundle of wines is sold out but the Unearthed Coonawarra is still available.

For a single bottle? This is what you want my dude, almost seven bottles for a fourth of the price https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_772832/coolabah-dry…

    • Thanks! Any deals on Hills Hoists?

    • I just realised these wines are ones you take a risk on without knowing the exact brand, I didn't even know that was a thing as I know nothing of wines, is there a good chance this is the wine as I see a lot of other much cheaper possible alternatives.

      • If your budget permits, get a bottle of Wynns Black Label Cab Sauv, Riselingfreak No 3 or Tahbilk Marsanne, and Veuve Clicquot Brut, that should cover all bases (red, white, and sparkling).

A good price on Wynns black label is about $25 and it's a decent wine at that price. The Allegiance wine I wouldn't buy for $40 (it's your usual, over priced then heavily discounted wine that pops up everywhere these days. A Sam Kim rating is useless, a James Halliday score of 92 isn't a bargain at $40). It's also a 14.5% boozy wine, if she doesn't like punch to the face reds she really won't like that.

You're far better off focusing on what your mum likes rather than chasing bargains. What does she normally drink? Is there another wine from that winery that's a step up? That'd be the killer choice.

    • Yeah the Ozbarginer in me thought it was a potential Ozbargain-level deal without even thinking about the alcohol content and other factors which have deterred me from these wines, and I agree with that notion and decided to get her a lower-end Oyster Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pikes Traditional Riesling as she seems to be enjoying her white wines lately.

The first one is probably https://allegiancewines.com.au/product/unity-coonawarra-cabe… (read the tasting notes and scores and compare against the description in the link you gave). This is a 'good' wine but its not a wine to drink right now, its one of those that should wait a few years. So depends on whether you want to give a 'keeper wine' or a 'drink in the near future' wine. It also depends on whether your mum likes strong cab savs.

The second box is obviously a bit of a mix. The Black Label Cab Savs are $38 per bottle at Dan M's; so essentially you are getting the other 3 wines for about $15.

If you want some quaffable not expensive wines for drinking in the near future, have a look at the Bec Hardy wine shed. These arent to the 'quality' of the ones you have listed but are great daily drinks

edit: due to the China wine bans, there are heaps of good quality wines that are usually for export flooding the market, especially reds. There are rumours that China may soon end the bans, in which case these bargains might go away to some extent. But as others have said, dont get fooled by the huge discounts

    • Yeah, I had a bit of a look around and saw a few other people mention that and my mother isn't that type of wine collector, the bottles don't stick around that long, and yeah the wine package did catch my attention in that possibly I could get some wines cheaper but it was already sold out. I will definitely have a look at Bec Hardy's wine shed, their reviews seem pretty solid, and I completely forgot about the wine tariffs and google says it likely gone by the end of the month. Thanks for the heads up I will have to sus out some wines before then.

What does your mum like? I wouldn't buy a heavy hitting red unless you know she likes that. Plenty of wine bargains around :) If you want to buy a single special wine, have a look at Qantas Wines or Winestar or the Wine Collective.

    • She likes the usual suspects for red like Cabernet Sauvignon, shiraz and Merlot and for White Wines like Chardonnay, sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. And Nah not really, I was just hoping to buy some wines to compliment her gifts and I will definitely be checking those out thanks.
