Do You Still Fill up at 7-Eleven since The 25c Per/L Price Lock Cap?

I have noticed that I can pretty easily find petrol that is >25c cheaper (per litre) than the cheapest 7-Eleven in the areas of Sydney I venture to. As a result, I've found myself very rarely going to 7-Eleven anymore, after almost exclusively using them for the last few years for my weekly fill. It's not particularly inconvenient to find a cheaper price elsewhere using any fuel price searcher (e.g., Petrol Spy).

I was curious about whether other people have changed their habits too. So I ask you; since the 25c cap on savings per litre, do you go to 7-Eleven as much as you did before?

Doesn't make sense when you can get cheaper fuel at the 'budget' places without jumping through hoops: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/255280/111301/img_2605…

    • Yep, that's my exact experience too.

    • E10 at Metro. I'd rather just put pure vodka in my car.

      • +2

Vodka is a lot more expensive than petrol, Mr Moneypants.

Alot of people who care for their car wouldnt fill up at Metro, speedway , apex etc etc. As someone whos gotten 98 tuned i was warned before hand by my tuner detected that Metros 98 in my tank was so bad in quality it was basically 91…

Those types of gas stations cut costs in every way imagineable. Wouldnt want to imagine what their 95 and 91 is like… sure if you have an echo corolla with 300,000 kms go for it.. but if you have a fairly new car or a car thats peformance oritenated its only gonna kick you in the butt later.

Best fuel stations are Shell, Ampol, BP, 7/11, and united.

      • Yea that's just regurgitated BS based on nothing but hearsay.

There's no question the cheaper fuels have less additives added in, than say V-power would, but the core fuel quality remains the same. They all come from the same refineries and have to meet Australian standards.

It's even debatable whether the additives actually do make any real world difference or you're just paying for marketing.

I really hope you didn't sign up here just to share FUD.

I've always assumed the base fuel quality would be the same, but it's contaminated fuel reports like this that make me a little worried.

Both Caltex and Metro are mentioned, but it's the poor response from Metro that's concerning.

  • It hasn't really changed that much for me. I use a chopper so it only really added an extra step in checking the best price at nearby 7-Elevens and then working out if it would be better to travel to one that isn't my nearest.

For example I can lock 98 at 193.3c
My nearest 7-Eleven is 227.9c (Saving ~$11 for a full tank)
The next nearest 7-Eleven is 207.5c (Additional saving of ~$4 for driving an additional 2.5km each direction)

For reference, the "cheapest" in my area is 206.9 and my closest Costco is 202.7 (but is 80km roundtrip)

I have noticed that I can pretty easily find petrol that is >25c cheaper (per litre) than the cheapest 7-Eleven in the areas of Sydney I venture to.

That's not the case in all areas. e.g. right now in Brisbane, 7-11 is close to the cheapest.

The biggest selling point for me is being able to lock in the lowest price just before the prices jump up, then topping up on the 7th day if I need to.

    • +2

then topping up on the 7th day if I need to.

Except now, after 7 days, 7-Eleven would have put their price up 50 cents.

      • Refer to the screenshot above.

  • My limited experience is

    a) it's not worth it without using a chopper.
    b) when using a chopper it saves about 10% versus cheapest in my area.

Shopback then does 2.5% off GCs which improves things slightly.

  • I used to exclusively go to 7-11 with a lock (chopper) but now I just find the cheapest on the way to my destination. Probably down to only 5-10% of the time.
On a 145L tank, it made a big difference.

  • I live beneath rocks.. With the 25c/L cap is that cap specific to that 7/11 station you're filling at (fuel price minus 25c/L)?

..So to get the best 7/11 price, youd have to find the cheapest 7/11 station youre physically able to get to?

    • +1

Yeah, the maximum discount is 25c/L to whatever that specific station you're filling up from.

  • In VIC, sometimes 7-Eleven has a higher price including 25c discount compared to Metro, Ampol or United. With United you can get a q free 4c discount card so it works out even better than 7-Eleven

  • +1

Where I'm from using the chopper is still cheaper. Costco is about 3c more expensive, but it's 50km round trip and usually have to wait for around 10 minutes. Other servos in my area, 98 is around 35c more expensive than chopper prices.

  • +3

What's a chopper people are referring to here?

  • +1

No, Shell Express and Ampol usually work out cheaper after applying discounts.

    • +1

Well played and a good deal, not doubt

I have used 7/11 for past few years only, but a few weeks ago I locked in 175 cents a litre, price jumped up to 239 cents a litre the next day, so even with the fuel lock cap of 25 cents I was worst off as down the road was cheaper still at 205 a litre. I was pissed. After that I’ve just avoided them now an go Ampol or EG!

    • Don't forget if you are an Origin customer, you can get up to 18cents off at EG.

      • +1

        🫢

I had no idea! I was just going to EG because everyday rewards points.

        I’ve missed so many cents!!

      • How do you get that?

        • In the Origin app.

if you live in Brisbane then Pearl Energy FTW (most of the time) paid $1.89 for diesel last night.

    • +1

      $1.89 for diesel last night.

Thanks, but my car won't run too well on diesel though.

  • I started going to Costco regardless which octane and bring the family, and bring 3 20L jerry cans for my other 98 premium car.

  • +1

It has affected my car that runs on 98 - previously I didnt care about cycle, but just jump into the chopper - now I have to time it selectively but I still use it.

on my LPG car no difference as the price difference is never >25c, closer to 15c

  • Only saw this today ! Locked for $2.20 when most places are $2.60…. when did this happen FNC's!

I now own an EV. ;)

Are you from 7 Eleven, yesterday i got an email from 7 11 asking me why I have not made use of their fuel for the last 4 weeks.

They are now facing a dilemma of people going to other providers in the area where the price is cheaper than 7 11.

I am now happy with Metro in my area, which I was ignoring when I was able to enjoy 7 11 and also noticed that Metro is cashing in on 7 11 crowd but keeping prices low in the area and remaining competitive.

    • Haha I got the same email which prompted me to make the post! I wonder if the 25c cap really saves them enough money after accounting for those that have used them less as a result. In any case, they're a giant corporation so I'm sure they'll manage

      • I wonder how much money they make when giving a 26-40c/L discount though. Maybe it's not worth the extra accounting for them.

  • The fifth closest 7/11 to me is around 20m away and cheapest by a long way from the other 4, because it has a few independents around it. I didn't mind paying a bit more for this price due to rumours about independents petrol being lower quality than the bigger brands.

Is quality of independents petrol really something of concern?

  • Helicopter user? What does that mean?

  • My local had 91 @ $1.66/L a few days ago and has been around that 1.70 mark around the last few weeks. I am a certified pilot and will get 7-Eleven 95 or 98 (local doesn't sell those cheap), however these new air restrictions make it so difficult to land, can't go interstate anymore. Nowadays I patron 7-Eleven 50-75% less…

  • Last time I went to 7/11 I scanned my phone but the discount didn't apply. I was extremely tired, and didnt check and didnt ask for a receipt. So I've boycot them now lol
