nothing like melted rubber after a year

    • +5

Genuinely curious here - what do you mean by that?

The biggest common complaint I knew of Omens is their lackluster wobbly hinge and black screen issue (on the 2023 Omen 16s), melted keyboard deck (I assume you mean this?) isnt anything of the sort ive heard remotely about these. if you mean the 'soft touch/skin like coating' erroding, that happens to basically all older electronics from many different brands that use the same thing and can become sticky like after use - that isnt exclusive to HP, and certainly isnt something happening to them nowadays

Are you sure its not just like, you having really acidic hands or your humidity level in your area, with no cleaning ever which led to the paint on the chassis erroding?

i've had mine for a year. sorry no melted rubber. Sold my Gaming PC and laptop for this 2 in 1 machine. No regrets.

This is actually a great price for one of the best spec'd laptop on the market (there, I said it) if you don't mind spending over 3 grands. I have seen the people paying at least 4 thousand dollars for something similar to this.

    • +3

Considering it performs similar to a 4080 desktop and a similar specced 4080 build posted here was 3k I'd say it stacks up well considering you also get a screen and portability on top of that, although the desktop will likely outlive the laptop that's the only downside.

      • +1

not really a 4080, 4070ti levels at best.

but yeah agree with you. its still an awesome deal considering performance uplift from 4070 laptop deals, well worth the extra $, unlike 30 gen mobile 3070 vs 3080 differences.

      • +2

A mobile RTX 4090 GPU is realistically equivalent to a desktop RTX 4070 and that's before you factor in the insane thermal throttling that will kick in within a few minutes of running this laptop at full load, which will reduce GPU performance drastically.

a similar specced 4080 build posted here was 3k

Since the release of the RTX 4000 Super series, there has been a flood of sub-$3000 RTX 4080 gaming PC builds since the start of this year alone.
Just as a recent example, here's TechFast's recent deal for an i7-14700KF/32GB RAM/RTX 4080 Super or 7800X3D/32GB RAM/RTX 4080 build for ~$2600. Both of them will sh*t all over the Omen for a $1000 dollars less.

There's almost never a scenario where a gaming laptop is a sane choice over a gaming PC and this deal definitely doesn't make the cut. Hell, there's almost never a scenario where a +$3,000 dollar gaming laptop is a sane choice for any use case, even as a desktop replacement. You could buy one of the above gaming PCs from TechFast, have a kick ass gaming rig that's future-proof for the next 3-5 years and still have a grand left over to buy yourself a decent laptop for the fraction of the time that you genuinely need a laptop.

Gaming laptops have terrible portability, virtually no battery runtimes to speak of, need AC power to run in full performance mode anyway so you're going to be tethered regardless unless you want your $3,600 laptop to perform like a $1,500 laptop and obviously they have none of the advantages of a traditional custom-built gaming PC (no OEM bullsh*t, upgradeability/customisability, easy repairability, better reliability, etc).

        • out of town sales reps with a car, out of 10,000 scenarios that don't need it this is 1 that could use it

  • I regret not buying this when it was sub $3,000

    • If it makes you feel better, 13900HX offers sizable performance increase over 13700HX at little power/thermal stress on top (of course, the 13700hx is pretty hot already), because the 13700hx we have nowadays is on C0 stepping and an architecture older actually, in addition to the core count and cache differences. the faster ram also helps (updated ipc), not to mention the 2tb stock ssd instead of 1tb.

      • Thanks. That does make me feel better. I think I'll wait for a deal on a 5090 laptop whenever that launches to replace my 3080 Legion

        • Just one more year for that - CES announcement, mid Feb release, and march/april when machines actually lands down here - if you want to catch a deal probably going to have to wait til later 2025.

          • +1

@Brrrrt: You know your stuff! I've breathed new life into my Legion to tide me over by getting an IETS GT600 recently. It dropped temps ~30°C on the noisiest setting. I'm now working out the best GPU voltage curve and best CPU undervolt.

            • +1

@Guybrush57: nice one! will serve you well for more than enough time until 5090 deals drop haha

  • +3

I'm cautious about purchasing a high-end laptop. Previous encounters have taught me that these top-of-the-line models tend to have a shorter lifespan, often struggling to remain functional for more than three years.

    • yes and you will also have the constant sound of a jet engine in the room as well

    • +3

      Really? What often goes wrong?
My cheap TUF gaming laptop is still going after almost 5 years

  • +2

Keep in mind HP have absolutely awful practices when it comes to their printers, for those of you who don't like to reward companies for anti consumer behaviour.

  • +1

I dunno about buying another gaming laptop anymore tbh - I've had at least half a dozen from all different brands and they basically stop playing games after 2-3 years because they overheat so much despite spending the time to pull it apart and vacuuming everything out internally and cleaning it. It is tempting deal though.

  • I don't believe in buying a laptop for less than four thousand dollars.

I'm going to max out a MacBook Pro.

HP is the technology provider for westbank apartheid, for those that care and want to put their $$ where their values are.

    • Thanks for that. Ill remember to buy more HP products in the future.

    • Basically, don't buy any American things including Lenovo.

  • Haha genshin marketing on a decice like this
