Hawaiian Airlines No Longer Offering 2x 32 kg Baggage Allowance between Australia and Hawaii

Hawaiian Airlines no longer offer the 2x 32 kg checked baggage allowance for travel between Australia and Hawaii/North America.

The baggage allowance is now one complimentary checked bag at 23kgs for those flying Economy or Extra Comfort. Passengers in these cabins will now be required to pay $100 USD to check in a second bag from Hawaii to Australia.

The new checked baggage allowance will apply to travellers who were issued tickets on or after 14 March AEST.

Disappointing change for those of us who like to shop in Hawaii.

What's there to shop in Hawaii? Lava rocks?

    • I brought home a curved shower curtain rod from Lowes in my board bag. For travel between USA and Australia or New Zealand, boards will be included in the free baggage allowance when travel is non-stop, direct and/or connecting service

      surf boards

      • … and Maui Jims

Plenty of outlet malls with much better clothes than you can get here and at a cheaper or equal price.

      • +2

Exchange rate has killed any bargains

        with much better clothes

Really? Last time I was in the states, it was all clothes made in China etc. So different to what we get here.

        • +3

Yeah but because they have 300mil people vs 27mil there's a lot more variety and especially the brand names are much cheaper.

Hawaii has under 2m people ;)

YMMV I didn't find the variety any different and once taxes and exchange rates had been factored in, the prices had been similar to home.

    • OMG
      Going to hawaii
      Whats to take?

Some Singets, swimmers, shorts, thongs, sun hat, walking shoes.

You can get away with a carry-on bag.

23 kg per passenger is very generous
      Thats 46kg between a couple.

Still plenty of room for shopping.
If not then dont waste your time and money on stuff you dont need.

Considering the weak exchange between USD & AUD, US inflation, sales tax, resort fees and incresed tip %, Hawaii and USA in general is an unaffordable holiday destination and unaffordable shopping destination.

    • +1

Agree. Hawaii has the most overpriced and underwhelming hotels in the world too.

      • +1

That is why you stay out of the main strip.

  • +2

Perhaps people are getting too fat so they had to lower the baggage allowance to counter it…

  • -3

I'm genuinely curious but what do people actually bring in these bags? I am very comfortable packing all I need in 7kg of carry on for a month or two, so not sure what you need the extra 23kg (let alone 46kg) for.

For shoppers, despite globalisation, there are still some appealing stores in Honolulu that are exclusive to the US: Honolulu Cookie, Ross Dress for Less, TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Saks off Fifth, Lowes, Hollister Co, Abercromie & Fitch, Walmart, Target among others. And Costco members adore a visit to a full-service store.

I’m off to Europe later this year will be interested to see what Paris Costco is like. We have 10 days for 12 of us in Loire valley so will be stocking up.

      • I thought we had Target and TJ Maxx in Australia?

        • +3

Totally different inventory in those stores compared to here

        • +1

Target Australia has no association with the American company, they only pay to use the name and logo.

      • -1

You can just order from the majority of these stores online to ship to Australia though?

Seems bizarre though, none of those stores are really doing anything special/different to Australia. Power of branding/marketing I guess?

        • +1

If you order direct from an American store they will restrict the items that they don’t have the Australian retail licensing rights to sell. They will also change the price if your in Australia with a steep mark up.
Some shops geoblock Australia all together.
The inventory is a lot different in America.

Depends too on whether you're a shopper or a buyer. I'm a shopper who enjoys browsing all kinds of merch, trying stuff on, looking at markdowns, sometimes leaving empty handed. And I enjoy shopping when on holidays because it's something I don't do in the normal routine at home. Buyers are focussed on making purchases.

      Jumping the gun a bit???

      • That one isn't carrying as much baggage and has clocked up ample frequent flyer points.

    Ironic as the Website:
    https://www.hawaiianairlines.com.au/our-services/products-an…
    says:

    Luggage Allowance

Unlike some airlines, we don’t see a generous 2x32kg per person luggage allowance as an extra, it’s included in our Sydney to Honolulu fares.

So, they are trashing their own point of difference…

  • Hawaiian is only changeing rules for Australia & New Zealand. 2 free bags still allowed for Japan & Korea, although still 23kg.
