Travel headphones - over the head

A mate of mine is looking for a pair of over the head travel headphones that are comfortable and cup the whole ear (eg Sennheiser HD201) but also fold up tightly.

  • if you want noise cancelling then just get bose =)
if you want great sound then look elsewhere maybe sennheiers pxc series, but nothing compares to the noise cancellation of bose headphones (sound quality is not crap its just not as good as sennheisers)

  • If you're after noise cancelling headphones to drown out cabin noises, you can't beat BOSE QuietComfort 15. Very comfortable to wear. I believe Bose is offering a free trial whereby you can take one on your trip and if you're not satisfy, return it. Google it.

If you're heading to the US, the Bose QC15 is selling for $299 while in AUS, it is retailing for $399.

  • Hmm, probably should have set the budget…probably no more than $100 and closer to $50.

Looks like it might be a Meelec HT-21 or Koss Portapro.

Or even something like the Sennys HD201 (not very travel-ish though)

  • Save yourself the money and get a pair of good earphones (like Sony XBA-3) with some official comply foam tips (~$20).

The sound quality will be significantly better than any 'noise cancelling' headphone and also block out more sporadic noise (like some dude going to the toilet), the earphones will also be more comfortable and more practical/portable in more situations.

Simply put by buying active 'noise cancelling' technology, most of what you'll pay for is the device rather than the speakers/drivers, yet most of the noise is actually blocked by the ear cups/ear inserts.

  • Just to close this one off…ended up going with the Bose AE2i for $100 - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84546
