Have they fixed the issue of increasing your targeted offer if you make a purchase?
I had to wait almost a year to return to spending $50 a week, haha

    • +11

Why would they fix something they specifically designed to make the more money?

      • It's not really appropriate/effective. If it were they could just hit every account with a 'spend $1,000,000 a week for 4 weeks to get 12 points' offer.

        • They average your spending over X months and then give you a dollar figure above that to get you to increase your spending to get the reward.

          • +2

@samfisher5986: I'm aware of that. But a one of burst of $2000 worth of discounted giftcards shouldn't factor in to your average spend.

            • @Bdawg: I don't see why not, they want you to buy more gift cards too.

I understand you want to find a loophole in the system but they want you to spend more money.

              • +1

@samfisher5986: You're simply not comprehending. Artificially boosting the spend requirement of someone who spent a mass on gift cards is not going to slowly boil the frog.

                • -2

@Bdawg: I think Coles would know how to get people to spend more money more then you do.

        • +2

Its not about preventing people from getting points, its about enticing that "little bit more" thought process in our mind.

Get rewarded for spending $50 on a weekly shop, spend $80, great stuff! free money who doesn't love that.. Next week Coles updates the next promo to say "get rewarded for spending $100 on a shop". Your usual shop is still $80, but now you're thinking hey only $20 more and I can get those bonus points. So they have effectively upped your spend by 20 bucks by giving you that carrot at the end of the stick.

    • +1

They're not going to do that. They want you to spend money. It took me something like 8 or 9 months to get my required spend back down to $50 from $140. I missed out on a fair few points during that time, but it was worth it to bring the spend back down.

Your best solution might be to get another card for things like this.

    • +1

Get another phone number from one of the amaysim cashback deals and sign up a second flybuys number for deals like this.

You can convert the bonus points to flybuys dollars straight away and spend them at Coles/KMart/Officeworks/Target.

      • +2

Don't need another phone number. Just another email address.

  • +4

Great timing, this could be a backup to reach the spending limit of new credit card :D

  • -1

who is doing this after this week's vanilla gift cards….

  • +10

    Hi,

    Just checking -

    For $100 + $5 fee + 2000 points ($10) = $105.00 ($5.00 profit)
    For $250 + $7 fee + 2000 points ($10) = $253.00 ($3.00 profit)

    Correct?

    • +2

      Yes.

    • +1

Hang on I don't understand this. What are you saying is $253? I understand the deal as you paying $257 to receive a $250 Mastercard and $10 worth of flybuys points (if redeemed for dollars). Or paying $105 to receive a $100 Mastercard and $10 worth of flybuys.

      • Purchase either $100+$5 fee or $250+$7 fee, you will get 2000 Fly Buy points respectively.

        • Is that 2000 flybuys points per $100/$250 giftcard up to 5 per account? So 10,000 flybuys points per card?

  • +1

Better off buying the current Visa cards.

    • +3

Yeah sure. For those in NSW and the ACT. Not for anyone else though.

      • Oh true. I forgot the Visa deal was limited to those states only.

    • That’s assuming you can bloody find any… still no luck after checking about 10 stores over the past few days

      Quite a few $100 but no $250s

  • Just in time to pay fees before the census date.

  • Can these be used with ATO bills? I know there was some issues, have they fixed this yet?

    • +2

I used these for ATO payments in the previous deal (giftcard portal) only a couple weeks ago… Unless they've changed it since then.

      • -1

who do people keep paying the ATO? I do not understand this

        • +2

For personal - either related to quarterly payments (eg payg instalments) or just income tax that is put on a payment plan

I use payment plans to spread out the payments so I can wait for gc sales like this.

          • @SmiTTy: this is actually a smart idea

          • @SmiTTy: That's only for self employed right? I'm on PAYG and my taxes already taken out each pay

            • +2

@jobargain: PAYG instalments can also be for employees. Sometimes you have other income (eg bank interest, dividends, capital gains, rental) that you need to pay tax on and that's only calculated at end of year. You end up having a bigger tax bill (if no other deductions) so you'll get slugged with a tax bill then.

But because of that, the ATO doesnt want you owing a big tax bill the following year so they ask you to pay an amount quarterly for the next year. You can of course vary this amount or tell them that your income won't be as much and not have to pay it.

The net is.. Its still a thing =(

        • +2

Another explanation is voluntary HELP loan repayments (e.g. HECS debts).

          • @WookieMonster: kind of sucks after they got rid of the 10% and 20% discount when making bulk reapayments

        • +1

          BAS every quarter

    • +2

If using the $250 card for ATO payments, enter in $249.50 as 50c will be the card fee which is tax deductible (if you care to claim it).
If you are someone who has BAS or like me and are on a PAYG Installment program, you have to pay a predefined dollar amount each quarter as a sort of prepayment of anticipated tax. This is why some OzBargainers go a little crazy on these cards as we can use them to pay our quarterly ‘taxes’ with them at a 10% discount.
It’s also good for those credit gift cards with odd amounts left in it and you cannot be stuffed trying to use it.

  • +3

    I can't freaking believe they're charging an activation fee….

    • +7

      you must be new here

      • His name is an amalgamation of beginner and bargain

        • +1

Is yours is an amalgamation of brother and cousin? ✋

        • borgainerz = bargain + organizer ?

  • +2

Will be stacking it with the CommBank offer, thanks.

    • +1

Thanks for sharing , have this too

    • my CommBank offer said Offer excludes voucher codes, gift cards and coupon deals. Sad

      • +2

They don't know what you're buying, they can't enforce that

      • +2

Don't worry, buying gift cards work.

      • +1

As far as I know, CBA does not have access to your Coles receipt

  • Thanks OP.

  • -1

not worth the effort when you have money in offset or TD earning more…

    Truely waste of time.

Much better when they do 10% discount that is 7.3% net saving after deducting fee on $250 card.

    • +4

Not a waste of time if someone is building up their Velocity points to redeem for international Business Class flights. It all adds up.

  • +4

7.3% is instant savings, while mortgage offset is annual interest rate. If you have regular payment like council, water, phi you can reap your saving straight away.

  • is it 5 per day or 5 per week for one flybuys?

    • +1

Deal says 5 per account. As in total.

  • Just checking, for in-store purchases these cards just require swipe + PIN, right? Or are they no PIN like the Vanilla ones?

    • +2

      swipe + PIN

    • swipe + no pin + signature for me.

Some terminals required me to press 'credit' and when it prompts for a pin, just press okay.

    • +1

These prepaid gift cards can redeemed in-person by swiping and then entering a PIN (if prompted for one).

You can set a PIN the first time you are prompted for one at an EFTPOS terminal, and you can choose any four numbers as the PIN. Once the PIN is set, you need to use the same four numbers every other time you are asked for a PIN.

If no PIN is set, you can opt for signature verification instead (much like a Vanilla Visa gift card).

  • +2

Some people complaints about the $5 fee for $100 Coles Gift Card.
I'm happy to pay $5 per 1000pts velocity and use for flights. There is an offer now giving 30% discount if you buy the same points straight from the velocity website but the cheapest you can get is $24.30 per 1000pts velocity.
I've just redeemed return flights 29/12 x 02/01/25 Perth - Sydney. High Season. Going to take the family to watch the fireworks. I used 14.100pts each way + $75fee. If I paid $5 per 1000pts, like the promotion, the flight costed me $150 each way included bags and seat selection.
    It's bargain or not?

  • +1

do these cards still easily get compromised? or have they fixed it?

    • -1

I got one this morning that had $5 missing.

      • Why would they not take $100? That’s so random.

  • Sorry if already asked but can i use my 100$ vanilla gc to buy the 100$ coles gc? Will coles allow it?

    • +2

I am assuming you have a Vanilla Visa gift card purchased from Coles (and not Woolworths)? If so, that will probably not work.

      • Coles updated their checkout systems in October 2022 to automatically block you from using a Vanilla Visa gift card as a payment method for Coles Mastercard gift cards. You should see an Invalid Product Mix error pop up on the EFTPOS terminal as soon as you swipe a Vanilla Visa gift card.

      • If Coles unblocked this for some reason in the meantime, the next issue is that since you are over the threshold for PIN verification (~$35), Coles will ask for a PIN for a $100 purchase from a Vanilla Visa gift card. Considering Vanilla Visa gift cards (at least the ones from Coles) cannot support PIN verification, you need to go through the signature verification process. Coles is a merchant that actually asks for your signature and then gets staff to compare the signature provided against the signature on the card you are trying to use (and maybe also your signature on any ID you have on you). In other words, Coles would ask staff to decide whether they will allow you to use a Vanilla Visa gift card. You will run into problems if the staff member serving you has no idea about signature verification (which to be fair was phased out in most circumstances in Australia in 2014), or does not feel comfortable with signature verification, or decides that you cannot use a Vanilla Visa gift card to purchase a gift card, etc…

      • PIN verification for $35+ transactions? Is that all gift cards or only Vanilla Visa gc?

        • +1

For refund transactions, you always need to enter a PIN (even if you tap a card from your mobile wallet).

          For purchase transactions:

          • If you swipe an eftpos card, you always need to enter a PIN.

          • If you swipe a Visa card, you should only be asked for a PIN for purchases over $35. I have experienced this with Vanilla Visa gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards, and OnlyONE Visa gift cards.

          • If you swipe a Mastercard, I think the threshold is now $0. I went to redeem the last 60c from a Coles Mastercard gift card a couple of months ago at Coles, but as soon as I swiped, I was asked for a PIN.

          • If you tap a physical card, you should only be asked for a PIN for purchases over $200 (unless you have a Mastercard, where the threshold should now be back to $100).

          • if you tap a card from a mobile wallet, you should not need to enter a PIN at all.

          • @WookieMonster: Is this your day job? lol

            Thank you!

            • +1

@rokufan: It is not. It is simply what I have observed over the years.

I should have also mentioned the comment above is only applicable at Coles. Different merchants seem to have different rules on PIN thresholds when swiping a card. For example, I once swiped a Visa card at Woolworths for a $0.02 purchase transaction and was asked for a PIN.

      • Can you pay for it using a Coles Master Gift Card? Does the POS know it's a gift card, not a regular Mastercard?

Say first buy a $250 one (pay $257, gain 2,000 points)

Then use the same card to pay for 2 x $100 ones (deduct $210, gain $200 and 4,000 points)

So, total spend: $257, value in cards: $247, total points: 6,000 ($30)

        • No, this was blocked sometime in 2022. I last tried it in June 2023, but as soon as I swiped the card on the EFTPOS terminal, I triggered an Invalid Product Mix error on the EFTPOS terminal, plus a message popped up on the checkout screen basically saying “you cannot use a gift card to purchase items in this transaction”.

Coles has programmed their checkouts to detect whether you are trying to use a Coles Mastercard gift card or Coles Gift Mastercard or Vanilla Visa gift card or a gift card issued by Coles Group when you are purchasing a Coles Mastercard gift card. It is quite straightforward for them to tell those cards apart from a Commonwealth Bank debit card, American Express credit card, NAB debit card, etc.

          • +1

            @WookieMonster: Thanks for confirming.

It actually makes sense that they don't allow split payments when there are gift card type products in the basket, due to ambiguity of which part payment is paying for what.

Much better to flag it straight away than detecting a prepaid card payment method mid-flight.

  • +5

    Can confirm this method works:

I purchased 5x$100 with my Flybuys account, and 5x$100 with my wife’s Flybuys account, using my AMEX credit card.

I then spent those Coles Mastercard Gift Cards at Woolworths on other gift cards (Uber, TCN Restaurant etc).

Came to a grand total of 21,838 frequent flyer points (a mix of Velocity + Qantas).

21k+ points for $50 worth of activations fees in my books is worth doing. Pretty minimal effort for money I’m going to spend anyway.

    • I had to go to 3 stores to find 10 cards so I had to put in a bit more effort. Fair reward for an hour's work.

      • I had the same thing happen back in January. The $100 variants were almost impossible to find across three Coles stores. Arrived at 7am this morning before work. Fully loaded hook ✅

      • Was lucky and found the last 5x $100 GCs this morning at 7:05am at the local Coles near work. Another couple had just asked the employee to look for these as they were not on display and they got the first 5x $100 GCs.
The worker thought they normally had heaps of these… maybe customers had pre hidden them?

    • Great strat, you could consider holding it for a week to go with TCN Him as I find it more useful for my needs. TCN Gift only being $50 is killer for me, don't want to deal with that many cards

    • Did you get your Flybuys points already?

      • +2

flybuys usually gets updated around 4:30pm the following day, not instant like everyday rewards.

    • +4

You forget to buy supermarket activ card which give you another 2.2% saving…

      • Wait where is this?

        • shopback

      • Any reports of staff refusing to let people pay with supermarket gift card for other gift cards?

        • +2

          How would staff even know?
Split payed 4 Coles MC's today with 4 SB supermarkets Activs.

          • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Nice. I'll give it a go.

            • @rokufan: Reading the description of how to activate the supermarket Activ card,
It looks like you can load it in your wallet. Then just tap with your phone.
Staff won’t know any better, if they even cared.

          • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Is there a reason why you purchased 4x SB supermarket cards and not higher value ones.

I’m think of purchasing a $300 activ card and a $200 activ card

            • +2

@MrAppropriate: I had 4 $100 SBs as I'd used $100 Coles MCs to buy em.

$300 and $200 Activs will put you over the silly $400 transaction limit, you'd have to wait 10mins for the last card.

              • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Sorry the $400 limit?

                • +2

@MrAppropriate: Activ visas are limited to $400 in a transaction, so trying to split pay with 300 and 200 goes over, so grab 4 at time if using Activs, going to a different terminal won't work for the last 100 either, just wait 10mins, then you can do another $400 again.

                  • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Ok.
                    Thanks heaps for the tip

                  • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Are you using a self or staffed checkout? I was told purchases of $200 in gift cards required staff approval.

                  • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat:

Activ visas are limited to $400 in a transaction

it's now actually at least $450

going to a different terminal won't work

different meaning service desk vs self-checkout vs manned?

                    • @tonester: 450 now, ok, thats better but still silly.

different meaning service desk vs self-checkout vs manned?

In the past, once the limit was reached, 10mins had to be waited for ANYONE else who tried to use an Activ visa in same store, may have changed, its been a few months.

                      • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: no, different terminal was fine last September, and possibly also this January

                        • @tonester: true.
I've tested to pay by 2 phones over $500 in one transaction is fine.
one phone over $400 on 2 POS also fine.

                          • @test8888: thanks, good to know when there’s 20x points instead of 10% off gift cards :)

so you also spent over $400 each on 2 POS within 10min?

                            • +1

                              @tonester: I specially tried today :)
spent total $495 from one wallet in 3 transactions on 1 POS, all good.
