my headband has fallen off after 1.5 years of use

    • I got the DT 990 Pro 250ohm nearly a decade ago and they're still going strong. I just bought the 700 Pro X because I wanted a closed-back, and the design looks a bit different but both are still made in Germany.

      • The old school Beyerdynamic (990, 880, 770, Custom One Pro, etc) are much sturdier than the new ones.

I too have old-school BD cans from 10+ years ago that are indestructible. I haven't heard particularly good things about the new DT900/DT700.

I came in here just to warn people about the headband… It's a shame because they're excellent headphones but my god that headband is a critical design flaw that makes it impossible to recommend buying

      • Yep, I've had my DT 700 Pro X a little over 2 years and the headband is now falling apart.

At this price level, you're far better off with the Sennheiser HD6XX or HD 560S (which is currently $200 on Amazon). This is a waste of time and money.

Same goes for the 700X, neither are a fidelity upgrade from their predecessors.

    • Sorry, where did you find Sennheisers HD6XX or HD 560S for 200 bucks on amazon?
      Thanks!

      • 6XX would be about $300 on a regular sale from Drop (and there's one right now), 560S deal was $200 and seems to have just run out of stock.

        • Thanks, Yeah, that's why I could only find HD569, not sure how it compares to 560S. Cheers!

          • +1

@Motozine: I would definitely steer you towards the 6XX if the 560S is currently at the same price.

            • @jasswolf: Thanks - I do already have HD600 and love them. Wanted something closed to help with surrounding noise in the room and didn't realise HD560S aren't. What would you recommend in 200-300 price range? Thinking of getting Momentum 3 for that, bad idea?

              • @Motozine: I mean if you want ANC, they sacrifice audio quality less and have solid codecs, but if you don't need ANC I would be looking at the Audeze Maxwell if you can reach to $400, and the Playstation Pulse Elite for $200ish if you're happy to EQ and never get updates (or have a Playstation).

Wired side of things I just covered below.

                • @jasswolf: Cool, suppose for when I'd like the have the maxed out noise suppression (either or both active and passive as long as it's high enough), not perfect quality would be fine. I'm going to try friends new Momentum3. If I don't like them, can try those more expensive ones you've suggested. BTW, I don't have PS…
                  Cheers!

I have the HDXX, the OG 580, and have owned a 560S in the past (sold them because I didn't like how they looked). As mentioned in the comment above, I also have an old pair of DT 990 250ohm.

You say that the DT 700/900 Pro X are "neither are a fidelity upgrade from their predecessor". Ok, both the 770 and 990 are currently around $280, but can be had for less. The 700/900X are currently $280, have a slightly different design, and detachable cables which their predecessors lack.

The HD 560S is currently $293 on Amazon, but cheaper on sale. The 6XX are about $300 from Drop.

So all four headphones are $200-300. I like my old 990s and wanted to buy a closed back Beyer and picked the one without the fixed cable.

Since "this is a waste of time and money… Same goes for the 700X", can you recommend me a pair of closed backs for under $300 with detachable cables?

          Those are open cans

          • -2

@rosebank: Sorry skimmed over that part and assumed we were still on open backs!

K371 would still qualify despite being a bit overpriced. MDR-7506 would be straight forward to mod to be detachable.

That whole segment is going to rapidly shift to wireless with high fidelity bluetooth and/or USB-C though.

            • @jasswolf: Are the K371 significantly better than the 770/700? I don't mind paying more. I got the 700X for travel because it has a hard case, and I wouldn't care if I lost them because thy're relatively cheap. The K712 comes in a velvet pouch; I assume the K371 is the same?

              • @rosebank: Tonally a lot smoother, better timbre, but perhaps not quite as resolving in the treble. You won't care though.

I think they're fair value at $150-$200, likewise the DT 770 Pro I consider fair value at $120-$140.

The MDR-7506 with Yaxi StPads (both best price on Amazon) would probably do a similar job for less right now.

EDIT: here's your sub-$200 AKG K371 deal. Yesterday's cashback would have made it $175ish.

@jasswolf: Sorry, replied in the main thread.

Got it. I assume you're not a Beyerdynamic fan, and think their fair value half that of market value.

I just want a pair of closed cans with a detachable cable and case. I don't plan on doing any mods.

Do you have any other suggestions besides the K317? They look kinda cheap and I don't like the design.

                  • -3

@rosebank: I'd just go wireless and get the Audeze Maxwell or the Sony Playstation Pulse Elite. Both have similar planar tech, the Sony being a bit cheaper in terms of construction and having a very bright default tuning, but it's easy enough to EQ, more so if you own a Playstation.

Link above for the Pulse Elite deal at $200.

@jasswolf: Yeah, nah, I'm not getting Playstation headphones, and the Maxwells cost too much for my use case. I already have lots of wireless buds, and a few headphones.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

@rosebank: If you like the sound of the DT 700 or DT 770 I would recommend you avoid the K371. I demo'd it alongside the DT 770 about 2.5 years ago and was quite disappointed considering the reputation it had. My main set of headphones before that was the Sennheiser HD598 so I was hoping to find some closed backs with a similar sound signature.

I'm not enough of an audiophile to tell you in the proper terminology what I didn't like about the K371. But it just sounded very muddy and tinny I guess? Just overall very cheap sounding, even after playing around with EQ, trying the Harman target etc. Plus I found the leather earpads hot and uncomfortable compared to velour. The build quality was solid though.

I also tried the Sennheiser HD569, but they were too much of a downgrade compared to the HD598.

The DT 770s sounded great to me, at minimum a sidegrade to the HD598, and potentially an upgrade in certain aspects. Even with the stock tuning I didn't notice the harsh treble it has a reputation for, so bear that in mind. It probably explains why I didn't like the K371. The only negative about the DT 770s was that the clamping force was a little high, so I ultimately returned them. In hindsight I wish I hadn't. I was probably just spoiled by the extreme comfort of the HD598s and the clamping force would've reduced after constant use. At the time the DT 770s were $185 and I doubt they'll ever get that low again.

I ended up getting the DT 700 Pro X which I've had for over two years. The headband is now falling apart, so I'm currently on the hunt for another set of closed backs. I've been curious about planar magnetic headphones for a while so might look into some higher end options like Dan Clark, Audeze etc. But if not, I'll probably just end up getting the upcoming DT 770 Pro X. They're essentially just updated DT 770s with new drivers and a detachable cable, which was the main failing of the DT 770s. https://www.beyerdynamic.com.au/blogs/news/new-100th-anniver…

@ono: Thanks for your comment. I ended up buying the 770X Pros, and never really considered the K371. I already own Dan Clark open backs and other planars.

Sorry but I disagree with the thought that they aren’t a fidelity upgrade, at least the 770’s to the 700 pro x. I have both and the 700’s are more balanced, have less harsh highs, and also have a wider, more pleasant sound stage. That’s before you get to comfort (the 700/900 pads are significantly more comfortable) and the detachable cable. If it weren’t for the defective headband I would recommend the pro x’s any day for this price.

I also have the 6XX’s and I enjoy them too, but they’re a different sound that I like better for some applications, and less for others.

      • +1

I agree with your take on the staging and tonal balance of the 700X, but that's not what I'm referring to. K371 deal I've posted walks all over the closed back discussion anyway, as does the Playstation Pulse Elite if you can EQ them.
