Victoria, L & P2 Licence

Hi All,
My conditions:
I don't have an overseas licence.
I am in Victoria.
I am 35.
I don't own a car.
I have a learner permit.
I am taking driving lessons and planning to give a driving test by the end of April.
At the end of the test I will have a P2(Green) licence.

My questions are
1) After how long my P2 will convert into a full licence?
Is there any exemption where I can get it early? based on age?

2) While I will be waiting for a full licence, if I don't own a car, how can I drive? Is there any company which gives cars on rent to a new P2 licence holder?

3) While I am on L, what's the best way to practice driving? I am taking driving lessons and getting confidence, however would really like to practice more, but don't have that much money for extra hours of practice.

Hope I will get some good advice. Thanks!

    1) 3 years on P2. The age exemption is not having to spend the year on P1.

    2/3) Got friends?

  • 3) do you have friends? if so, ask your friends to help you learn. if not, then driving lessons would be the only way that I know.

if I don't own a car, how can I drive?

    Then buy a car! 😂
Noone else is going to be buy one for you! lol

  • Just do what most people do - buy a car. If my kids could do this at 16-18 surely you can do this at 35?

Which car to buy can be a difficult choice on any budget.

      • OP is 35. Not 16.

Yeah should probably buy any car, get it inspected by mechanic first if it used. He can always get another if it falls apart. And comprehensive insurance will avoid headaches down the line.

        Jesus kids can do this.

Happy for your kids. Thanks for your confidence on me. Although everyone is different with different conditions and we all can choose to respect that.

    No. Well not easily.

    1. Usually car rental is an age thing. They likely won’t care if you are 35 and on your Ps. You will still have to display P plates.

    2. I would recommend several lessons with an instructor. After this time do you have a trusted friend you can drive with? Perhaps one who has recently taught their kids? Once you are ready to do your test do 2 or 3 more and the instructor will take you around the area of your test.

Want to find one that rents to P players?

      • yes please!

If you plan on driving on a regular basis, schemes like Flexicar and GoGet can be convenient - if you live near their sites. Both accept P platers.

        • I'm sure Randzyx123 knows, he wouldn't just be making stuff up would he?

        • The excess on any incident you have would cost you thousands in any rental car… it costs Full license holders that… god help any P Plater with no experience

I was in your shoes recently.

    1. 3 years
2/3. I bought a Toyota for $2800, and I practiced with that car. I passed with flying colors and used the car for another two years. Since I bought a car early on, I didnt have to spend that much money on lessons. I took 5 lessons which costed me $300. One of my friend did not buy a car and he took 15 lessons which costed him $900.
