they coulda offered this before the heatwave..

    • +2

Demand too high at that time I guess amirite

    • +1

      There will be another one

  • +12

position a normal fan a meter away from an entry / exit to create the Bernoulli principle in action for the same effect. Science Biatch!

    • +1

Ah but my grandson points this upward and balances a balloon on the air flow. It's magic.

      • +2

        In yo face, Bernoulli!

      • I tried it with pingpong balls and that didn't work

    • Looks great on Youtube, so long as the air outside the house happens to be absolutely still. If the wind is against the fan, the fan is going to do sweet FA.

  • +15
  • -8

a $50 fan is just as good.

    • +15

      If the $50 fan is:
      - DC
      - built to last
      - has variable speed settings rather than 3-4 speed options

Then sure. If not, this is going to use less energy (creating less heat), last longer, and be quieter.

      • +4

Plus this thing moves a lot more air than a traditional $50 fan while being smaller

      • extremely easy to clean just splash water on it

    • What about a free fan from someone's hard rubbish?

    • +8

a $50 fan is just as good.

That's inflation for you. Last time a Vornado deal got posted some guy was saying his $20 KMart fans were just as good.

      • +1

I'm pretty happy with the crappy $15 USB C fan I got from Coles. No where near as good as $50+ fans, let alone $150+, but it's good enough for me in this heatwave.

  • I love this fan.
ive been looking for a second hand one for $50 or so, to supplement my existing one; so that i can open it up, install a 12v to 24v step up internally somewhere and use it in the car to supplement wind speed to the rear passengers.

After reviewing this Dreo vs. Vornado air circulators https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbJPIRurJYE&t=21s, does anyone know where to get Dreo in Australia?

    • +2

They don't sell here. I looked

    • +1

Go look at Amazon UK. They say they ship to Australia and the voltage will be correct.

      • What about Amazon US?

        • +1

The one who gave the voltage said 120V.

          • -1

@try2bhelpful: Any DC fan is going to have an AC-DC converter, and every consumer converter I've seen in the past decade has been able to take worldwide voltages (100-240). The only real problem might be that the plug is wrong.

            • @rumblytangara: I’m sure if it could take both they would have both voltages. However knock yourself out by buying it from America and see what happens. It might be OK it might not be.

              • +1

@try2bhelpful: I've sourced my own DC converters for fans (for socket compatibility), it's really not a big deal.

It's only a pain if you're dealing with high amperage AC equipment as step down transformers are heavy, inefficient and don't compensate for 50 vs 60Hz.

      • +1

Just looked, amazon uk only had dreo heaters but not fans for some reason.

        • Maybe cos heaters are in season there atm still.
But that and you'll be laughing in Aussie Winter?

    • +1

      Keen to know too.

I was set on a vornado until I happened to come across that video last week and now I want that dreo which is quieter, uses less electricity (though the vornado they compared against probably isn't the dc version), and pushes more air.

      • Yeah I dunno why people are raving about this video, it's extremely misleading as he's testing the AC version of the Vornado, not the DC. You can tell right away which version it is because the AC models have the buttons, whereas the DC models have the knob which let you control the power precisely (and which means you can also use a smart plug to turn it on/off with automations).

    • Thanks for this. I had no idea.

Ordered one from Amazon UK, $161

  • +19

To all the people saying cheap fans are just as good do you actually have a Vornado? Me, I’ve got both and they aren’t the same. Anything that is moving a decent amount of air is a lot noisier. We can leave the Vornado on overnight, or use it whilst watching TV, and the noise level is a lot lower.

    • +3

Yep, I've got one (this DC one in particular). Besides being wildly more expensive, it is actually noisier per unit air moved than my other floor-sitting 'tornado' type fan, for the same amount of air moved. The other two differences though is that a) the Vornado one is much smaller (which I guess is why its blades create more noisy turbulence) and b) it uses a loot less power for the same apparent airflow - I checked them both using a TP-Link smart switch.

So if space is at a premium or you value being more electricity efficient then those are the major pluses I believe.

      • Sorry, just checked - I have the bigger (633DC) version. In which case I think this 533 must be very small indeed

      • +1

it is actually noisier per unit air moved

        How is that measured again?

Also noting if you leave a DC Vornado on a low setting, it makes almost no noise at all and still creates decent draught.

        • Just from the amount of air I can feel moving past… the big tornado ones are very quiet too on low settings because they have such large blades they can turn slowly and still move air

    • Does this cool off a normal sized room? Thanks

      • +8

Fans don't cool, they move air around which will reduce the apparent temperature. Depending on how big your normal sized room (bedroom? open plan living space?) and how many people you're trying to cool, yes it will make you feel cooler.

Alternatively if you have another room that is cooler you can use this to move air between the hotter room and the cooler room which will reduce the temperature in the hotter room.

        • Cheers mate! Good ideas

    • +3

Yep exactly, Vornado owners know how much better they perform compared to budget fans. I have found Vornado to be easily worth the higher price.

    • DC pedestal fan with a 35cm diameter blade has 2.4 times the blade area of a Vornado 633DC. For me the (limited) use-case for the Vornado is occasional use in my home office running off a smart power outlet.

  • +1

The primary justification for choosing this fan might revolve around its more attractive design. Apart from that, you're essentially creating your own marketing material, :)

    • might revolve

Noting this is an opinion, and unless you have seen this fan or a similar one, it's a baseless one.

  • +10

I always thought a fan would do the same thing as this but my Vornado is miles better than any pedestal fan I've owned before.

  • +1

Quite noisy if you set it above than 50%. Doesn't circulate air that well to be honest. We use it to push cold air from our living room to the kitchen. Gets the job done I guess. Rrp not worth it imo.

  • -1

OMG , cheapest wass 11x a few years ago.!! Inflation !!!

  • My $19 KMart one works amazing

    • +1

      show us

      • +7

What, you want to see me falling asleep in front of my $19, 3 speed oscillating fan, weird fantasy champ!

        • +2

Hey, don't knock it 'til you try it. There's people out there are making good money on Twitch doing just that!

        • Feet pic?

  • Thanks OP .. got one .. need another one as 660 way too noisy in bedroom even at first setting.

    • Yep that's the problem with the AC models. DC models have a knob which let you control the power exactly how you like it. I strongly recommend that people do NOT buy any AC Vornado models — if you're going to spend this much money, pay a little more for the superior DC model.

  • +1

    Can someone share the key differences / their recommendations between 460 / 533 / 633 / 660?
Just looking to get one for the bedroom during heatwaves, cheers

    • +1

533 and 633 for bedroom. I used 660 for living room. i think there is comparison in vornado in term of square space covered and recommendation

    • +4

Get this. DC is quieter and more power efficient, which makes it perfect for creating a bit of airflow while you sleep.

  • +1

I've got one. Worth every cent

  • +6

I have the bigger (633DC) version of this, and the thing I like most about it is how easy it is to clean. After you remove 2, 3, maybe 4? screws (don't remember exactly how many, I never bothered to put them back because they're really not needed), the front grill is secured by 4 plastic clips that "snap" into place. That entire front grill can be submerged and washed in the laundry sink, bathtub, hosed off outside, or something like that, and the rest of the fan can be wiped down with a damp cloth or disposable wipe. Let it all dry and put it back together. Compared to cheaper floor/pedastal fans I've had, it's much easier.

    • +4

For anyone doing this, don't remove the screws at the hinge mechanism. I learned that the hard way.

      • +2

        Yes, that's good advice haha.

I just double checked, and there's 3 screws that I needed to remove. 2 of them are about 2-3cm away from each of those hinge screws you mentioned, on the "rim" of the back panel (if that makes any sense), and a 3rd one, on that same "rim", but centered downwards, close to the base/stand. With all 3 removed, it's not going to fall apart or anything like that, it's still held together by the plastic clips, it just makes the cleaning process easier.

  • This or the 633AC for $149?
    https://amzn.asia/d/2WRgKQC

Will need to wait for it to be back in stock though

    • +6

DC. Better speed adjustment and less power consumption.

      • +2

and easier to connect to a smart power plug.

    • +1

      That's not DC

  • +1

We’re about to put a split system in the lounge, would this kind of thing be alright to shift some of that air down a short hallway into our bedroom? (I realise that it’s hard to say without seeing the floorplan).

    • +2

Yes. It's what I currently do with my bigger version.

  • +5

i set my ac on 24 and use my vornado and it feels much colder

these fans are next level stuff

people saying their kmart fans are better are straight up idiots

    • +2

They've probably also never used a vornado or something even slightly better than a Kmart fan

  • Looks like its already sold out

    • +1

@jupiterbrody, see @try2bhelpful's comment above - same price at David Jones, and still in stock!

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15052778/redir

      • Thanks mate - just bought from DJ. Felt like a bad Ozbargainer cos the larger DC model has been this price as recently as January. But happy to get my second Vornado!

  • +3

I bought the smaller version at the start to experiment their claim, I was impressed with it! I bought a 660 for my living room, best investment so far.
For people who haven't tried this thinking normal fans will cut it, give Vornado a chance. I threw away my Kmart fan after buying this. Does take a while to find the correct angle to get the most out of the vornado effect.

  • Can anyone suggest something smaller and cheaper to start with ? My CFO not happy spending this much yet…

  • they're also good for drying laundry or spills on doonas or shoes overnight

    • +2

they're also good for drying laundry or spills on doonas or shoes overnight

Any fan can do that. It just requires hours of gentle airflow. In the case of laundry, a dehumidifer coupled with any fan is amazing, and in the case of shoes you stuff paper into them to wick out water.

I really like air-circulator style fans, I have four of the damn things. But lets not get carried away.

      • i have 3x 660 and 1x 533dc

  • This brand has an awful smell last time I bought its fan…

    Returned it without thinking twice

    YMMV

    • +5

Also known to circulate farts up to 22m away.

    • MM certainly varies.

    • Have multiple Vornado fans. Never had this experience..

  • +1

by the time it arrives it will be 18 degrees everywhere

    • They should be good for helping circulate warm air, but I couldn't get a room at the end of a hallway any warmer for some reason

  • +3

This post is gathering lots of fans
