Wot? Is it against the rules to upvote a good deal if you aren't going to buy it?

      • -2

It trips the dodgy voting algorithm if you vote with monotonous regularity for deals not available in your state.

        • +18

          What? Mods can you confirm?

This sounds very dumb if true. I still upvote really good deals that aren't available to me to support/thank the rep/OP for their contribution to the community.

          • @PainToad: No, that is not true at all. Nor is there any algorithm that looks at what states the deals you vote on are. We encourage people to vote on something that they think is a good deal regardless of the circumstances.

P.S. I only came about this comment because of a report, mods don't read every comment on OzBargain, if you want to ask us something please use TWAM so we can read it.

      • Similar thing happened when I voted too many of one particular store/person, although from memory it temp banned the person not the voter which is even weirder.

Something about "inciting deliberate artificial inflation of votes"

        • Wow.

        • Nothing similar has happened to your account. What you are referring to is the system giving you a pop up warning if it detects an IP match with the OP of a deal or a rep from the store you are trying to vote on, it does not block you from voting, nor does it temp ban anyone. It is just a warning and you just dismiss it and vote anyway if it doesn't apply. The exact wording is:

We have detected a possible link between you and the original poster or the store itself. Please note that if you are in anyway affiliated with this offer, e.g. you are a staff at this store, or if you are a friend/household member of the poster, you should probably stop here, as artificially inflating the votes is categorised as Sockpuppeting on OzBargain.

If you are not affiliated with this store or the poster and still wish to vote, please check the confirmation box and click on the Vote button. Your account may be subject to further investigation, and if found to be guilty of sockpuppeting, will be placed in the penalty box.

[ ] I am not affiliated with this store or the original poster.

It can be set off especially if people are using public internet. It has no effect on your account or any aspect of your ability.

Any chance these guys have a real website that isn't Facebook?

    • +2

      yes, they do

      here

but its barebones at best and doesnt have any pricing/specials - their main audience is actually on tik tok mainly actually. But i figured more people actually have a facebook account (the body of my post has the highlights anyway, so if you dont want to log in you're not missing out on much actually).

I hope more independent shops follow this steps. The more the competition the better for us the consumers.
Woolies and Coles knew what they were doing back in the day when they used to buy off independent stores.

  • Just need all independent shops to follow this guys example of he can do it I am sure they all can do it

    • +2

Do we have any actual data to show that this is not just loss leading or advertising occasional dumped stock as an everyday deal?

How would 5 cent lemons be sustainable, how would the farmer, the transport logistics and Skippys all make enough money to be sustainable?

      • -2

do you think lemons grow 1 per tree or something mate

        • It doesn't really matter does it?

If I go to the shop and buy three lemons for 15 cents, they need to pay at least 42 cents in staff wages to process my transaction, they are obviously a loss leader.

Lets say we fill up a huge truck with 5000 lemons (I doubt their trucks are that big), thats $250 of lemons.

You would pay more then $250 in fuel and delivery driver wages alone to get it from the farm to the shop, assuming the farmer is giving away the lemons for free which they never will unless they are not up to standard or they are dumping them.

          • @samfisher5986: The semi trailers that the lemons are transported off farm hold more than 100,000 lemons. Unless you are referring to micro machines?

            • @BartholemewH: Yes but those vehicles aren't transporting to skippys.

The issue is skippys just won't be selling that many lemons, particularly due to the location.

              • @samfisher5986: I spoke to a seller of grapes at Flemington was wondering why it was so cheap i paid 10 dollar a box. The seller said the farmer sits at around 60-70 cent a bag of grapes to produce and package.

Farmer/group packaging producer brings item to Sydney market to be sold at wholesale, auction, or nobody buys. This is where your independent and smaller business buy their stock

Farmer/group packaging producer has two options put it in cold storage and let it sit for next week. Works if the produce is still green or hasn't been gassed. Farmer has the option to bring the produce back to their farm via truck. Often Farmer ask the Sydney market stalls farmer mates sellers to liquidate them higher then their cost.

What I have learnt from all this is that never buy fruit and veg from colesworth. The independent fruiter is cheaper because they are buying at wholesale price then adding their mark up. Independent fruiter i reckon are reliant on volume.

Sad to be a farmer getting jipped by major corporation.

      • the key according to elijah in his interview last week with ACA was buying in bulk - at least one of his suppliers he stated was specifically rocklea markets. i guess if he said give us a couple of crates of lemons he could probably get it averaged out to cents. it's also apparently a family owned business if i remember right - maybe he does a lot of work unpaid?

the logistics thing is fair. though could also be his business also has a truck of their own, so they can literally buy a truckload of stuff without depending on a casual contract with a 3rd party. petrol / diesel to be factored out over thousands of kg of fruit and vege maybe?

        • +1

A lot of fruit/veg markets use Rocklea as their suppliers.

Buying in bulk is fake, everyone does that and they aren't selling enough to buy anywhere near what most inner city places would be buying in "bulk" yet I don't believe they are able to buy lemons under 5 cents outside loss leading or dumped stock.

Trucks simply can't carry that much fruit/veg, its just not possible for the maths to work out on this and be sustainable.

There are plenty of fruit/veg shops around that to crazy deals on specific fruit/veg for dumped stock (Sorry I don't know the right word for it)

          • @samfisher5986:

            loss leading

im still not really sure why you are decrying loss leader strat? Is this mob the only mob ever to do this or something?
Or are you subtly saying its hurting other fruit and veg mobs?

            dumped stock

            so its inedible or what?

ps if you dont like the deal the neg button is also available to further express your discontent with the content of the op.

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Loss leading is fine but its good for people to understand what is happening rather then thinking everyone else is simply ripping them off.

By dumped stock I mean when a supplier has too much of something and needs to get rid of it as they know it will have to be binned soon, or stock that has already become older and is no longer wanted by shops that don't sell damaged/old/not nice looking stock.

I'm not complaining about the store specifically but just pointing out that its likely no different to what is already happening at other fruit/veg shops.

              • @samfisher5986: there's a bit to unpack here but i think we're better off in me saying i do see the merit in your statement (i do). But if people find that buying this stock keeps the family (especially kids) fed with an affordable option..is it so bad?

              • +2

@samfisher5986: I think you mean seconds rather than dump stock. Like you said, most independent fruit/veg places use this strategy of buying seconds in bulk direct from the growers market regularly.

Colesworth OTOH want the premium produce in order to charge the premium price to the end consumer and have contracts locked in with suppliers who can guarantee X amount of supply.

There is little difference between premium and seconds besides aesthetics but the Colesworth duopoly have brainwashed the consumer to only accept premium product and thereby always paying the premium price.

        • maybe he does a lot of work unpaid?

Maybe he got paid more on Tiktok potentially?

  • +1

Crazy prices. They are a bit out of the way at Vic Point but still definitely worth it at those prices.

    • +1

yeah a bit out of the way but at these prices thinking a trip out once a fortnight might be worth it

      currently smashing through

      about 4kg watermelon a week
1kg of apples (missile apples are my favourite but not really in the budget anymore)
      1kg pears
      8 punnet strawberry
2-3 punnet black berry and blue berry
      4-5 punnet of raspberry
      2 kg of banana
2-3kg navel oranges (this is starting to get a little expensive..)

      • Wow that's a lot of fruits you go through in a week. Big family?

        • is it? my kids eat a LOT of fruit - will inhale a punnet of raspberries each in a sitting etc. veggies soso…

4kg of watermelon might sound like a lot but i find the rinds on some of these watermelons these days is pretty thick - the navel orange stock (USA) i find also has a thick rind.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: 1 serve of fruit is approx 140g (1 medium apple/orange). 2 serves a day x 7 days ≈ 2kg per person per week.

I'd say your (kids) rate of consumption is well above average, but that's good they're getting a lot of healthy intake.

            • @pennypincher98: Until you realised zoos stopped feeding fruit to animals because they were getting fat lol. Fruits are great, much better than junk food but they do also contain a lot of sugar so everything in moderation :)

I don't see anything wrong with 2kg a week though

              • +1

@helpme: Well yeah if you're having 10kg of anything per day, that extra 8kg has to go somewhere lol. I'd be a bit alarmed if you just dropped an 8kg log per day 🤣

  • +1

There's a whole bunch of grocers throughout the greater BNE that do this - in my experience the quality can be a bit hit and miss when it comes to these special deals

    • +1

Thats the sole reason its cheap, you have to deal with older or imperfect fruit/veg as well as it only being able for a few weeks until something else needs to sold quickly.

    • +2

i implore you to pitch in to help support businesses that support the cost of living crisis by posting the deal if you see one.

  • Good prices but a bit too far out of the way. Would have to make a day of it to make the trip worthwhile.

    • +1

yep fair. unfortunately looking at the comments although there is a rothwell branch, the pricing is nowhere near as good.

      • +1

We have a few cheap fruit shops within 10 mins of us so it'd have to be really special for us to go all that way.

It is nice out there though. Maybe one day we'll check out Wellington Point, have fish n chips or something and check out the fruit shop. There is that Golden Circle factory outlet out that way too.

        • +1

bellas is a bit out of the way for me but my dad swears by it. its also open 24/7
cocos is also 24/7 - i am FAIRLY sure its the same cocos that used to be at sunnybank back in the day
yuens farmer market at underwood apparently is decent too (and there is big gun butcher which apparently is decent too)
rochedale markets sometimes has some wild sales too - been thinking about getting some sugar cane mulch from them - currently 14.98/bale - going back to tending my veggie patches like back in the day.

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Those are the ones. We alternate between Bellas, Yuens and Rochedale Markets depending on prices or just where we happen to be at the time. Quality can vary a little but we aren't afraid to cut a bit off if the price is right.

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Very disappointed in Bellas on my last few visits, tho their quality and management have improved quite well.
Mega Discount Fruit Market at Calamvale Shopping Centre has a wide range of decent prices, but no cooler to keep fruits in the right temperature.
Coles with 25% points to stack with those already on low prices is my main go lately.

The combination is the best but can take time and effort and be stressful most of the time.

to make a day of it… & relax
Spend the day on Coochie (Coochiemudlo Island). 7min ferry ride from Victoria Point Jetty

      • Thanks. Not so good on the water but maybe one day. 7 mins shouldn't be too bad but our toddler struggled even on the city hopper across the river.

        • +1

          Usually a sheltered boat ride.
It's a laid back tiny island loved by children. There's food. And a bar for adults. Easy to walk around, finding a sheltered beach to explore.

But grab the fruit on way home🌞

$5 fare each way for adults
          270, 279, 274 bus stop at jetty

          • @INFIDEL: Any car park nearby? Without a car, it's not easy to carry things on the trip.

      • If ya love midge bites you’ll love coochiemudlo

        • +1

Depends on time of year & weather. Never been bitten.

Kinda brilliant marketing. They'll do well!

  • Wish they had a location in NSW.

  • Skip dawg turnin' up da heat!

  • support your local fruit and veg stores, butchers, etc.!

I know going to multiple stores is a bit less convenient, but it's worth it
