How to Switch ISPs on nbn FTTP?

Probably a stupid question but internet is pretty critical to my household as me and partner both wfh so I can't have any downtime.

I've been with tpg for some time for ages for that reason. They've always been about the market price and I haven't been bothered to change in case there were connection issues.

That said, just got notified there is a TPG price hike so I've decided that I will look at alternatives.

I have FTTP nbn. If I find a new provider, how does the switch work? Is it similar to switching mobile plans where at some point the old Sim becomes inactive and you put in a new SIM except instead of a Sim you change the password on the router?

Ask new isp to connect to a spare uni-d port , ensure connection is working then cancel TPG

    • The only answer that is needed !.

  • Any decent ISP will cancel your old ISP when the switch is done, so all you need is to do is sign up to the a new ISP. Expect the switch to take a couple of days and you may lose internet for an hour or two.

Not with FTTP - just use another port - no need for any outage.

You absolutely cannot rely on this.

I changed from AussieBB to AGL just before going on holidays assuming that this would happen. I ended up having to pay for two different services on ports one and two while I was away. I literally had to wait until I got back to swap the cable over in the NTD and then call Aussie to cancel the service on port 1.

        You made your choice so…

…I let other people know so that they could avoid making the same mistake that OP suggested they make?

  • Except for Superloop, who require 30 days notice…

    • To cancel or sign up?

I'm in the same boat as op and actively looking for a new provider.

    • tpg also require 30 days notice it seems

      • You can still cancel anytime but they will just charge you for the remainder.

You approach your new provider and get things set up with them, if they're good, they will tell you to keep your current connection active until everything has been shifted to them. Once the new provider confirms everything is active and with them, you contact your old provider and cancel your stuff with them.

With FTTP, you can switch to a new provider with basically zero downtime.

Your NBN termination device has 4 ports (labelled UNI-D 1, UNI-D 2 and so on) and when you get a new service provisioned they can use any one of those 4 ports.

    1. Sign up / call up to the ISP you want to go with.

    2. ask the customer service rep to activate your fiber internet on an unused port

    3. When you get an email or sms that your service is ready / active, simply unplug the port that your router's ethernet cable is connected to and connect it to the UNI-D port that your new service is provisioned on.

    4. You can then disconnect / discontinue the old service once you've verified everything is working fine.

      They ?
You could have at least said "They're" so we can all correct you in the same style as the other post.

That would make more sense. Cheers.

  • If you really cant have any down time … buy router that handles mobile phone tethering fallback.

i use my glinet brume2 to use a phones internet for when the NBN goes down

  • Super loop are tricksters
Plan period is from start of month but get billed (ie $$ extracted from funds) on 15th of prior month.
On 30th of last month gave 30 days notice. Cancelled direct debit.
Now waiting to see if they A; suspend access for not paying on 15th: B; send me a “Pay up” notice or C; allow access ‘til 30th
