Canon Camera Lens Help

Hey peops!

So I need some help!

It is my girlfriends birthday coming up, so I am looking at purchasing a camera lens for her. She currently has a Canon 650D or 550D something like that.

I know she currently has the 18-55mm standard lens that came with the camera. I am thinking of getting the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens (shopping square has it for $160).

Is this the right one to get? She does a lot of photography both landscape and people so I think this would be a good lens :)

Cheers

  • Which does she do more? If landscape, an ultrawide might be better.

  • yeah 18-55 is more suited for landscape as its the wider end you want

50-250 is more for portrait and also good for animals (if she like animal shots)

  • +1

    35mm f2.0 although it is $350~

If you want something on the cheaper side, 50mm f1.8 aka the nifty fifty.

  • The lens you are looking at is still a pretty average lens, but then good lenses are very expensive.

An exception to this is the canon f/1.8 50mm this will be perfect for portraits on those cameras, and it is a super sharp lens that is great in low light as well.

    somewhere around $110 delivered.

Consider an off-camera flash as well. Doesn;t have to be a canon.

  • She does do a lot of landscapes, but also photos of up close as well like flowers etc…

    • landscapes and closeups require totally different lenses.. it's best to decide which end you want to get.

I don't think you can get an ultrawide for under $200 though. For portraits the 50mm 1.8 mentioned by epicaricacy is a bit plasticky, but performs very well. For macro .. mmm… get some macro extension tubes maybe?

      • She currently has the 18-55 lens, wouldn't this be the same as the one you mentioned?

Wouldn't the 55-250 be suitable as then she will be able to zoom more? Just not sure.

        • 18-55 has an aperture of between 3.5-5.6 at its widest

the 50mm has an aperture of 1.8. The smaller the apecture number (f), the more light enters the sensor, which means its better for capturing fast motion, in low light and it also has better bokeh (blurry background in portraits).

and also as the 50mm is a prime lens, the image quality will be better than the zoom lens as the optics are less complicated

55-250 is useful in complimenting the 18-55 in terms of the focal range available for you to shoot but its not the best lens for quality..

        • So in your opinion she would prefer - http://www.t-dimension.com/revamp/lenses-canon-c-17_788/cano…

          Over the 55-250 lens?

        • I don't know about her, but for portraits I think a 50mm 1.8 would give nicer-looking photos than a generic zoom lens.

The 50mm will be effectively an 80mm lens on her cropped-body sensor.

  • I would personally get her this:

Yes, its not a great lens, but knowing my gf, she hates changing lens in between shots. It is a decent all-rounder lens, IMHO

    • Superzooms are very convenient, just be aware that the 18-200 Tamron weighs 400g. The 550D weighs 475g, so it'll almost double the weight of the camera. A stock Canon 18-55 is 190g.

At the end of the day, it really depends on what she wants to do with the lens, and what sort of shots she'd like to take. There are things a superzoom can't do that a cheap 50mm 1.8 can and vice-versa, depending on what you want.

  • Hey, So I'm looking at buying a few new lenses too.

    you recommend:

to start off with for portrait photos but what about wide angle on a canon 450d (i think it has a 1.6x cropped body)

    would this be good value:

I would like a fisheye or just wider but they seem to all be above $600 dollars which is out of my budget at the moment.

    • have you check out the rokkanian/samyang fisheyes…. they are manual but good IQ and cheap ( about 280 I think when they had black friday sales)
