  • Couldn't you just buy a digital STB & an Apple TV etc and convert the monitor into a functional television for roughly the same price as this C3?

    • true, but this would be better for console gaming as it has HDMI 2.1 support, that gaming monitor is only hdmi 2.0

      • +1

Ur wrong it does have HDMI 2.1, that gaming monitor..

        • +1

I stand corrected. just double checked, one hdmi 2.1 and two hdmi 2.0.

          Cheers @Ultraman

      • +1

        C3 support 4x HDMI 2.1

    • I guess you could but most people find it much easier to just press the power button on a single TV remote, you're paying for the simplicity imo

      • Harmony remote?

        • +2

Harmony discontinued their remotes 3 years ago.

If you are lucky you can get CEC working without other issues, popping up.

    • -1

You could technically, but usually speaking, the in-built apps is supposed to work "better" with the TV and produce better results with processing/upscaling. How much is debatable.

      • -1

I'm guessing you read this somewhere, but just so you know, it isn't true one iota.

        • +2

I've never encountered a TV OS that comes even close to the Shield.

          • -1

@Dex: Shield isn't exactly new hardware, latest is 2019 if I recall. There's bound to be high end TVs with better performance, OS user experience though is another thing.

        • -1

Yep, but like I said how much is debatable, because there are people claiming either way, and there are so many different external solutions out there, and different TVs you can't compare them all.

I would say there are some definite exceptions, newest Apple TV and the likes.

          • @Tbargain12: I guess you did say (and apologies, as I missed it) "usually". But yeah, I recommend a Shield or Apple TV (or Zidoo depending on what you are trying to do) over inbuilt apps any day.

    • +1

People buy this for OLED as well.

    • No speaker

    • I guess you could, but then you'd be paying the same price and not getting Dolby Vision.

  • -1

@Coolhandlucas, why not as good, this has hdmi 2.1 with audio relay, where the gaming monito from costco does not (only has hdmi 2.0) i would say this is as good if not better unless maybe you only intend to use with a PC

    • I was just referring to $ per inch value, $1299 for 48 inch OLED panel vs $1375 for 42 inch OLED panel….

    • +1

Not sure why you were downvoted.

      Simple:
This TV is a better option if you need HDMI 2.1. It is a great price for a 42" OLED.

That monitor is a better option if you need Display Port. It is also a great price for a 48" OLED.

      • Probably because the 48" does have HDMI 2.1

  • +6

Bigger is not always better. 48" can be too big to be placed on the table as a monitor. I remember a while ago when LG only had the 48" and everyone switched over to 42" when that came out.

    I'm using a 42" C3 and it's ok on a 1800 x 800 desk. I'd much prefer a 38" or 45" ultrawide because the vertical height of the 42" is a bit inconvenient.

    • -7

i have a 48" c3 and love it. just mount it on the wall and ignore the dummies who have buyers remorse about buying a tiny ass 42". My only ragrat is not getting a 55 tbh

      • +3

A bigger monitor can work in some situations, but for normal desktop use the biggest disadvantage of going too big is that your PPI will suffer. A 42" 4K screen is already at a meagre 104.9ppi which is about as sharp as a 22" FHD monitor.

Going to 48" drops it to 91.8ppi (about as sharp as a 24" FHD monitor) and 55" 80ppi (about as sharp as a 1366x768 HD 20" monitor).

You can sit further away and increase the font size to keep the image appearing sharper… but then the monitor will just look smaller so you might as well have gotten a smaller monitor in the first place.

But if it works with your setup and content (text will be the most affected; video will look fine), then that's great! It won't work for everyone though.

          • @magnitude: My main desktop is hooked up to a 42", two 43", and one 86" screen. My second computer is hooked up to a 49" and two 55", all three OLED.

I do a lot more text-based tasks on the main desktop and more video-based tasks on the second desktop. I easily notice the difference in the sharpness of text between screen sizes, especially on OLED screens as they don't use a standard RGB stripe subpixel layout. I have to sit further away from the larger monitors to not see the blurry text. But on my second desktop I mainly watch video so text sharpness isn't a big issue.

As I said before, it depends on what tasks you do on your computers. I have an extra 55" 4K TV that I was considering using as the main screen on my main desktop but decided to go with a 42" as I preferred sharper text. The 55" has been sitting on my floor for about two years.

Everyone uses their computer differently and have different desk and room sizes so it's not surprising that what works great for you might not be the best for other people.

            • -1

@eug: Sure but i'm referring to the 48" C3 which is a great panel to use for desktop. I would use a 55" C3 but I fell for the anti-bigger screen propaganda by the 42" crowd and went conservative with 48". I'm sure i would be happy with a 55 C3 though.

I had to drill some holes and install a wall bracket but after doing that im super happy with this setup and would happily replicate it again with a bigger panel. Just a normal ikea desk, not too far from the screen (maybe 80-90cm)

              • @magnitude: What tasks do you do on your computer?

Using multiple 43", 48", and 55" screens literally every day is how I decided to go with a 42" C3 for my main monitor because it suited the tasks I was doing on my main computer better than a larger screen - which I already had.

I went with 48" and 55" for my second desktop because it suited the tasks I was doing on that computer. A 42" would definitely feel too small.

Bigger isn't always better - it depends on what it's used for and the desk/room it's going into.

                • +1

@eug: Mainly working with text. Like 99% of the time. I might have a background video playing in the corner but that's about it. I do think if the screen was bigger maybe i'd use it to watch movies and tv shows but 48" is a bit small watched from the couch. Again i hate the propaganda by the small screenists which is why i am a bit aggressive against them online

                  • +1

@magnitude: 48" is tiny from a couch… unless it's in a smaller room of course.

If you're considering a 55" OLED for text work, I would definitely suggest trying it out somewhere first. The difference is quite noticeable vs 42 and 48".

Again i hate the propaganda by the small screenists which is why i am a bit aggressive against them online

I didn't realise there were 'small screen propagandists'. Screen size is really subjective. Tasks are different, working spaces are different, even people's eyes are different. There's no one size that will fit everybody.

There are plenty of people I know whom I would never recommend anything above 27" as it'd be a total waste based on what they do; on the other hand I have friends whom I've pushed towards 55" as it'd suit what they do.

          • @magnitude: What resolution are you running?

Are you increasing to say 125% in browsers?

        • if you dont have big desk, yeah stick to 42

      • Too pov to get a 65"?

    • Ive had different 42 inch models as my usual monitor for about 10 years. Works well for size, I sit about 30cm away from it. Tried a 55 inch and the text was a drop in clarity and way too big to see everything without constantly moving your head. I put the 55 inch against the wall so its about 60-70cm away and its great for media, browsing, and basically everything else by a decent margin. Then the 42 inch was too small my bedroom lol, so went back to using it as a monitor.

If you have space I'd say bigger is better, it does take a bit of time to get used to it though. If using software like photoshop and needing super clarity for jobs up close then sometimes it doesnt work as well. I use split screen most of the time. Movie or tv on one half, productivity on the other. Which to me is why bigger is better by a huge margin.

      • Ive had different 42 inch models as my usual monitor for about 10 years. Works well for size, I sit about 30cm away from it.

Wow, that's about how far away I hold my phone. A 42" from that close up must surely be tiring for your neck as you'd have to constantly move your head.

        • Dont move my head at all. Just my eyes lol.

  • +3

I don't want to attack anyone but the 42" is generally accepted as the sweet spot for desk/office usage. You can go 48" if you want but fewer people do it; and having obsessively searched for answers to the question in threads there's a roughly equal mix of people who upsized and enjoyed it or downsized and enjoyed it.

It is subjective but there's a lot to suggest desk depth and how far you fit back are factors. Giant desk and sitting back? Go bigger. Smaller desk and office work? Go smaller.

I have a 42" non-OLED and on my small desk and sitting fairly close (75cm) I have to turn my head to survey the entire screen, and it's totally fine, but I would not go bigger, for office work. Certainly if I kicked back a bit and was playing games I'd go bigger.

    • +1

Wow you sit pretty far away (75cm). I have a 42 inch and my face is only half the distance away from the screen. Dont need to move my head to see the full screen. Maybe because I've been sitting that close to a big screen for a decade, I'm now cross eyed so have better peripheral vision lol.

    • I have 42" C2 and generally have regretted the choice. (mainly text, but some video)

I do not use the right hand side 3rd.

Would have done way better getting a high end-ish smaller curved monitor.

Having said that… I have a 75" I use in my lounge room that looks fine plugged into a miniPC.

So for me, the 42" is too big to sit close to (like you would in an office) and get value from its real estate.

      • How's the pixel shifting in the c3? Would make it unusable for me as a monitor by reports on Reddit. Can turn it off but then burn in.

        • As mentioned I have a C2. I pixel shift on. I barely notice it.

    • +1

Yeah I wouldn't go 48" unless I have a large room and can place it on a stand or something way back from the desk.

I've heard 42" you need a minimum of 85cm, I'm at 75cm which is why I haven't pulled the trigger on the C2 and then the C3 for two years in a row. Came very close on the C2 when it got sub $1000, but I waited too long to decide and they all sold out.

  • Hmm…how about pairing this with an iPad Pro with stage manager..thinking )',

  • 'WFH"?

I'd be too scared of burn in to do that on an OLED

    • Just don't have it at max brightness

      • Hell… My tv is OLED. The moment I turned off power saving features I had colour retention within a minute. Thankfully it wasn't permanent (I did notice quickly).

        • Image retention and burn-in are actually different things. You don't have to worry about image retention as it's temporary. My LCD monitor had image retention as well.

          • @eug: Yep, just did the test on my 2 year old monitor, no burn in. There's no way you'd get it after a minute.

            • @cheng2008: Sure, it was retention then. But holy heck it came on so fast and was scary. It was playing a low poly style game with pastel colours. It took only moments. Not worth the risk… Power saving went straight back on

    • Exactly. Something that never gets mentioned on Ozb is pixel shifting. Look that up on Reddit and there's a good chance you won't risk an OLED as a monitor.

  • My C2 has a defect, claimed warranty from December, still not sorted yet, not gonna to touch LG/samsung again

    • Who's the warranty through? LG or retailer?

      • No difference. I went to LG from beginning, but took ages to communicate, then I went to retailer, they passed my case to LG again

    • +1

Interesting, I heard this about Samsung but not LG. Who would you go with instead? Sony? Probably just as bad.

      • Generally, I only hear about QC issues from Samsung too!

        • -1

They sell the most number of TVs so it's no surprise that you hear more about them. The defect rate could be the same as any other brand but there are so many more out there that there'll be a greater chance someone would post about it.

What you're not hearing about is the large number of people who don't have any issues at all as they're just happily using their TVs.

          • @eug: You'd think LG would be up there close to Samsung in terms of TV sales though, I've never heard anything bad about LG until this guy

            • @bleeder: I thought so too but according to this global estimate, LG shipped 22.91 million TVs in 2023 while Samsung shipped 58% more at 36.3 million.

For another anecdotal data point, my 40" Samsung LCD TV from the mid-late 2000s was still working when I gave it away around 2019. On the other hand my LG C7 from 2017 had a failed PSU in 2023.

            • @bleeder: My experience
LG: Black screen randomly from every source, as well as in TV apps such as YouTube and Netflix. claimed warranty to LG in December, no response until mid-Jan, and asked me to wait, they will investigate by the technical team. I then went to the retailer, and they asked LG to send people to replace the powerboard, and then the main board, but the issue is still there. The repairer escalated the case to LG, no response in the last two weeks, but I just chatted with them, and they told me they plan to do the replacement finally, not sure how long shall I wait.

Looks better than Samsung, but still not sure how long to wait

          • @eug: I accept defects as long as they provide good after-sales service.

My Samsung monitor has coil whine out of the box, searched it and found it was a common problem. Reddit users got either refunded or replaced. I sent it to repair, but they told me that was normal…Also Mini DP port has defects when waking up from the PC. Very bad QC.

Finally disputed from Paypal, and got the money back.

              @cxy0614:

I accept defects as long as they provide good after-sales service.

              Me too.
My work monitor is a 43" Samsung purchased in March 2022. In late 2023 the right side became dimmer. At the end of Jan 2024 I contacted them via online chat. Their service agent then called me and arranged a date for them to come over. I was going to be away for a few weeks so set up an appointment the day after I came back. On that day the guy came over and replaced the panel within about 20 minutes. Samsung also sent me multiple discount vouchers for tablets, phones, and TVs. I consider that good after-sales service so I would get another Samsung monitor in the future.

The problem with my good experience above is that there's not much to say so I didn't bother starting a forum post just to say "Guy came to fix my monitor. It works now."

But if I had a poor experience I'd be a lot more inclined to start a forum post about it. So in the end people would be far more likely to read about bad experiences than good.

      • My C2 was used as a monitor, I rarely watch TV, so I will go with Dell

  • after buying only LG tvs for past 15 yrs I am cautious of buying LG after the last 2 LG TVs I bought have issues with Wifi dropping out making streaming a movie almost impossible. Now I know mine are older models but googling "LG TV wifi dropping out" shows a lot of other people having issues with LG TVs…I am not saying don't buy LG, just interested if other have had same issue and any comment on if the new models have solved this problem?

    • I have issues with LG ethernet dropping out

    • FWIW I don't have any wifi/ethernet issues with my LG TVs at home and at work.

    • +1

Had a wifi dropping out issue that was fixed by opening it up and removing the wifi module and putting it back in. Saw a video on YouTube explaining it.

      • I will give it a go, thanks!

  • Is this the start of the C3 clearance deals? I reckon will go a couple of hundred cheaper than this in the next month or two. Damnit, the time has come to decide whether I want one again!

    • Yeah I’d wait just a few weeks longer but if it reaches the end of the month then pull the trigger. Stock will likely disappear by April, given past years.

      • Damnit, I find this time of the year very stressful haha

  • +2

I’m going to HODL and see if it goes down to $900ish like the C2 42” once did ;)

    • Good plan. Certainly $1099 or $999.

      • Yeah I’d 100% jump on it at that price. What’s better than one 42”, it’s 2x 42” lol
