NordVPN Does Not Reconnect after nbn Outage

I have contacted NordVPN support for an answer to this, but surprisingly they do not have one.

I have NBN FTN, so due to old copper cabling, dropouts occur frequently (sometimes 1 a day, sometimes more, sometimes a good day with no dropouts). When a dropout occurs, it will usually take the modem at least 2 - 3 minutes to reconnect.

I have auto-connect enabled with NordVPN, but it gives up within that 2 - 3 minute re-connection period. (Also have the kill switch feature enabled to preventing connection to the internet when NordVPN is not active). “Auto-connect was turned off After failing to connect you to VPN multiple times, we turned off auto-connect for now. Try re-enabling auto-connect with different settings”, This means that the internet will not reconnect again, without human intervention. It appears that when a temporary internet outage occurs, NordVPN tries a finite number of times, and then stops trying.

I am not the only internet user in the world that experiences internet dropouts, therefore I cannot understand why there is not a solution to this. Anyone have a solution to this issue? There should be a way to make NordVPN Auto-connect more persistent, or better still to keep trying to reconnect indefinitely.

I did not have this issue with Windscribe.

    Proof ?

Maybe I am the last remaining NBN user with internet dropouts :)
I see NBNCo are now turning a healthy profit, so maybe all the issues have now been resolved…. apart from mine.

      • WHat does ISP and NBN co say each time you ask the ISP to escalate the issue ?

        • It is a terrible and predictable spiral.

ISP first insists that modem be changed over to another (even though this has been done numerous times before)
Eventually they get an NBN tech to come out.
The NBN tech will usually confirm that is an issue somewhere between the FTTN and house.
They will sometimes spend hours going between pits trying to fix issues.
The ISP then says that the issue has been resolved.
The spiral starts again, as it has not been resolved.

Even with TIO involved, there does not seem to be anything that can be done.

FTTP in my opinion would resolve the issues.

          • @OzyBe: WHat ISP and how many have you tired - from experience ABB will not just close the job/case if it is not fixed - they will keep NBN co working on it.

            • @Sal in SA: Three ISPs. Current is Spintel. It is an NBN issue.

NBN have a roadmap to install FTTP in around 18 months time. It is quite possible this will be delayed beyond this time.

A mediation request was placed by NBN to replace faulty copper cable (the tech could not do this himself, as the ducts are clogged with mud). This was booked in December, with a mid Feb date being quoted for the Copper replacement. Nothing happened.

NordVPN tries a finite number of times, and then stops trying.

    Yep…

NordVPN requires a working internet connection.

    • Yes, all the VPN's I know off require a working internet connection. I just need NordVPN to be more persistent when the internet is not working.
"Don't give up buddy, just keep trying, the internet will be working soon"………

  • Most VPN services require a 'static ip address' rather than a 'dynamic ip address'.
Could be that when you experience a dropout your ISP assigns a new IP address.
NORDVPN may be looking for your old ip address..

    • The IP address is not changing. Thanks for suggestion though.

  • The Nord client is a pile of shite, I am unsurprised that it doesn't work as expected.

    • unsurprised that it doesn't work

      double negative… 😲

    • Perhaps. The interface is nice.

      • The interface is terrible compared to a 'good' VPN service like Proton.

Nord is incredibly slow to load up, it doesn't allow for autoconnect to foreign endpoints, and as far as I can tell it doesn't use Wireguard- there's no protocol selection option, and tunnel establishment times are so agonisingly long that they surely cannot be using Wireguard, which in my experience takes a second or less.

Most of the Nord UI design seems to be advertising space trying to sell other services.

I'm only using it because it's close to free with cashback offers, but this is certainly a 'you get what you pay for' service.

I've other services in the past. Proton, and Pure(?) before the latter was bought out by an Israel malware company. Nord is by far the worst provider I have spent money on- their target market is clearly people who have low expectations from tech. Hell, they even bought Superbowl ad time years ago.

        • I won't argue with your criticism of Nord interface.

I was using Windscribe - no issues with it, it just became quite expensive with no special deals being offered.
I felt Windscribe was more robust, and it was able to work with dropouts. ie. It would reconnect when the internet started to work again - not give up after a short time.

The Windscribe people have a weird sense of humour, renaming all the VPN locations to similar but rhyming names.

          But their product was solid.

  • Nord log your activity and will sell you out if asked to. Switch to PIA

    • I use CyberGhost, owned by the same company as PIA.

    • Proof of this?

  • I am not the only internet user in the world that experiences internet dropouts

You are not—my internet never seems to be perfectly on 100% of the time either. Which is a mild annoyance for me most of the time, but becomes a much-less-mild annoyance as more and more services seem to have "perfect, uninterrupted 200+Mbps Internet connection—just as God intended and as the writers of our Constitution codified in our unalienable rights" as their basic working assumption.
