Garmin Edge 540 Solar Bike Computer $549 (RRP $749) Delivered @ Garmin

150

Hi all, I'm not seeing this listed anywhere else, nor announced anywhere, but Garmin seems to be quietly discounting their Edge 540 Solar edition on their website at the moment.

Note, this is the Solar version - normally $749 RRP, so at the discounted price of $549 its slightly cheaper than the non-Solar model at the moment (which is $599 RRP).

Cheers.

Is this good for Zwift? 🤣

    • +1

Yes, I use 530 to dual record.

      • Thanks, that's actually a good idea!

  • I paid $399 for the 530, (in 2019) it's been great (another alternative if they discount them due to the 540).
No idea about the solar and if it would keep you going without charging but assume it is very similar otherwise.

    • I bought mine in Nov 2021 for $291. Looking to buy 1040 when it’s cheaper. The only benefit for me are workouts which is missing from 530.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/666546

      • Good price

      • Just had a quick look at the 540 solar. Does it have these workouts, is that the feature name?

May be a good time to do a small upgrade and put mu edge 530 on eBay, $350-375 would be ok.
They seem to hold their value pretty well. I had the 520 before this. Nothing wrong with the devices in my experience, although a lot of people have those wahoo bolts, and are also solid. They would work with my Garmin sensors (and one bike has integrated sensors.

        • Yes they are called as daily recommended workouts. I have them on my watch and recommends different workouts (eg. base, anaerobic, vo2 max, etc) based on load, HRV, rest.

          https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/GUID-17DE938E-466A-4…

          • @Commenter: Thanks will have a look.. mostly just commute and up to 3 longer rides a week max. Nice if it has proper recovery recommendations to go with it, like woop.

Still Don't think an extra $200 is worth it for USB connection and solar though over my 530.
The so the charging is n't. I'll leave in the sun job. Only works when it's powered on and in use so it just reduces the battery draining

            • @G-rig: Your commute would base and you need one or two per week higher heart rate workouts such as tempo and v02 max to improve.

              • @Commenter: Yeah all I'm saying is it's easier doing dedicated training indoors if you're into that, hard to replicate the same conditions etc outside, for intervals etc, aka I'm not worried about it.

Hour's in the saddle mostly help one improve 😉.

So I don't think for me it's worth an upgrade unless I can sell mine for $350 ($300 max in reality I'm guessing). cheers

  • The 540 Solar also on sale on Bikebug for $569.99. The 1040 Solar for $999.99 and 1040 standard is $839.99 (which I am considering but not sure a new model/update will be coming soon)

    • Ended up ordering the 840 from ebay,
$639 (after $50 off with voucher and $10 postage).
Seems to be the best overall from the research I did (and like the smaller form factor)

Not quite as cheap upgrading as it used to be but should be covered for price drops for 12 months.

i appreciate its not solar, but the 1030 plus deal at $599 is probably a better choice

  • -1

    My bike was only $20.

    • +1

Yeah doubt you need one then.

    • Pretty good find.

      Some good discussion here:

Bundle is a good idea if people don't have an that stuff already, but a lot only need to upgrade their head unit. I've got the 530 and think it's plenty good enough for most people, depends if you want a bigger screen.
Touch screen isn't really necessary but easier if using the maps and navigating in real time (entering address etc) a lot of features you'll never use, just six screens of data.

Edge 540 bundle $599, better value than the solar unit only:

    • btw bro that's a US import, says maps: North America
      - Sports & Outdoors 0% cashback

People should also consider the Elemnt Bolt V2 Gps Bike Computer Bundle, $529

      • Hit link.
        Alt + F
        Map
Nothing about '"says maps: North America" on the Amazon page…

Please show where this is listed? I cant see/find it anyways on the listing.

I also see reviews from AU and they indicate the product is working fine. If for any reason the unit is not upgradable to local AU maps (which I cant see why it would be a 'locked license' or the likes), then its Amazon - simply send the thing back.

But, please do help by assisting where you found that it states "North America" maps in the listing…
Haven't had such problems in the past. Doesn't mean you are not correct though.

Fair point on the shopback "sports and outdoors" - that is my bad on that one. Got it confused with eBay. I think you get .5% or something there… Either way, minimal money on both sites.

        Thanks!

Hey mate, I can only assume you'd want Australian maps, as the maps come pre installed on the internal sd storage. The price is pretty good if you want the bundle and that older unit (still 0% claimed on Amazon). It is touchscreen but still no phone-based data screen setup (like the wahoo and the 540/840/1040).

Anyway you can add maps and think that unit has microSD card slot. Aus+ NZ maps $30 (but no doubt could get them from somewhere else). The edge 840 seems better and free map swaps with the app.

          https://www.garmin.com/en-AU/p/567280

New Garmin Edge 1040 Solar gets app-based settings configuration, USB-C charging and a claimed 100-hour battery life. Improved mapping too.

So I'd get the 540 or 1040, and may as well get solar:).

I noticed the Edge 840 (Apr 2023) on ebay, $50 off with ebay plus, $679-50+10 postage = $639.
i don't think you need the bigger screen and weight to be honest.
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3yFRqACA8o&t=1s

The Edge 840 seems like the best overall (touch screen but still has buttons, 540 buttons only). ps battery life differences on all models are similar enough, not sure solar is necessary when you are getting ~24h. or 1040 if you want the big screen.
Apparently Elemnt bolt v2 is best for buttons-only.

For me it would be between this 540 Solar ($549) and 840 ($639), or 540 ($489)
Or nothing and keep 530, or consider Elemnt bolt v2 (dont' feel like changing mounts, sensors would work but OCD).

          • @G-rig: Elemnt Bolt V2 bundle $499 @ 99 bikes

          • @G-rig: Thanks,

            Device arrived yesterday.
Everything is just fine and as expected.

Anyone looking at the Amazon offer for the 1030 Plus Bundle, if the Amazon offer is still running, worthy purchase.

            • @mickyb80: Sounds like a good buy.
I have all the sensors etc so unit only was good for me, got the 840.

              • @G-rig: Fair enough.

BTW - The unit is running AU/NZ Maps just fine.
                There was no charge.

While the device had a 'pre installed' USA and EU map file, it was as simple as downloading the Garmin Express Desktop app, downloading the AU/NZ Map file and pushing it to the device. 100% Free - $0.

Its a 1030 and there should not be any charges to the maps or map updates.

One thing I didn't check (properly), was there seems to be no Tidal integration with the device and no listing within Garmin Connect IQ. I'd seen Spotify, deezer and Amazon Music and assumed Tidal would be in there also. My bad! Oh well, otherwise to sort music out…

For the money, I think the 1030 Plus Bundle for $700 is a f@r'k1ng steal.

                • @mickyb80: That's good to hear mate. Great price for the bundle. I knew you could change the maps and shouldn't need to pay so all good. X40 series still need to plug in the cable but can swap them anytime. The unit's good, still didn't feel extra modern for the price but maybe in a few years. Touch screen and buttons are good, USB C, climb pro and have loaded a few IQ apps. Check out gp Lama channel, the map overly is good with 6 data fields.

I love and use tidal but absolutely no point in trying to run music from the GPS I reckon, and especially not cd quality/hi-res. I don't use music on bike but phone would be fine hey.
