Buying Laptop and Mobile from USA

Hi, relative is currently visiting California, USA.

Another relative is asking that the visiting relative bring iPhone and Windows laptop, which they (requestor) will pay for. They are requesting 2nd Hand iPhone to save costs and brand new laptop for reliability.

My role is to find a good deal and order the items at the visiting relative's address so they can receive the products and take it back home for the requestor.

Question: Where to buy 2nd hand iPhone 13/14 256GB pink/white from and where to buy brand new laptop in USA?

Laptop Specs: Windows, 8GB ram minimum, 13 inch/14 inch. good WHR.

Budget for Laptop: USD 600

Budget for Iphone: USD $800

If it cant be from USA, then Australia will be last resort. Dont care about warranty from either country.

They won’t be saving any costs if there’s any defects or issues with them and you cannot get warranty coverage. Not worth it.

  • It sounds like an open-ended task, with no model, and no budget, find me an iPhone and laptop.

What a convoluted way to get stuck with a laptop with no warranty and a carrier locked iPhone from some dodgy seller. I'm sure our terrible dollar doesn't help things either. Have any of the 3 people involved in this task even checked as to whether this is worthwhile?

    • Requestor is not in Australia.

      Visitor is in USA.

The price and reliability of 2nd hand products in USA better than their country, hence asking.

      No exchange of AUD.

Unlike here, Apple sells refurbished iPhones in the US market. By the time you add the applicable state sales tax the saving will be minimal. Beware that many notebooks may not have international warranty and can only be returned in the country of purchase.

    • Maine is tax free. I bought camera lens there years ago when I was there.

      • Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon don't levy state sales tax. Maine as far as I know is 5.5%, one of the lowest along with Hawaii.

Everything looks cheaper in the US until you add sales tax then do the currency conversion.

Just tell them to get stuff from here.

Currency conversion right now kills all the bargains in the US. You’re better off buying from here.

Don't forget iPhones in different countries have different bands/etc, and adding even more complexity, US iPhones don't have a sim card tray slot and only use eSim. They'll be worth a lot less in the future if you ever want to sell/trade it in (assuming anyone will take it).

Honestly for both of those items, I see minimal benefit to getting it from the US both from a cost perspective and a warranty/resale perspective. You'd get better deals by holding out for sales on gift cards, buying items on sale, or just looking on market place if you want to get 2nd hand.

  • Johny’s pawn shop. Cnr 5th & central

  • I dont know if it works both ways, but the ex just moved to Colorado with Iphone14 from AU - and she had massive of issues with phone companies that wouldn't accept (not sure the full story its the ex) - she ended up sendin it back to AU to daughter in Melbourne who sold it

So much judgement. If you dont know then no need for your comment.

Asked my friend in NYC and he said the following:

For iphone: Back Market or Gazelle. Also Amazon Renewed.

For Windows Laptop: try the official websites.
