Does TCL Portable Air Conditioner Need to Have Water Emptied?

Recently purchased the TCL TAC-12CPB from Bing Lee was told that you never need empty water. So assuming it is self evaporative ACS which never need to empty the water or am I wrong? Does it depend on usage?

This model also has humidifier which means should be self evaporative, as checking the manual and compared to other ACS there never any mention of this special gimmick. I have already emptied the water a few times, the tank does get full from 1-3 days on normal usage.

I have a self evaporating portable and if it gets too full then it will turn off and ask you to manually drain it. I have a hose coming out of it to fill a huge bucket now instead. I been reading that the self evaporating makes it more efficient because the water helps cool the coils down, but I was worried it'd put more wear on the machine? In any case it's a little quieter when the little fan in it isn't flinging water at the coils constantly.

I bought an even longer hose that I was going to drain straight out the window, but I thought may as well collect the water for the vegetable garden. I know water isn't expensive but figure may as well use it for something.

If you attach a drain hose and run it into a drain, you will never need to manually empty the water.

Page 22 of the manual describes how to set it up for continuous draining. On page 21, manual draining is described.

I assume it comes with a drain hose so you don’t need to empty any tank.

Evaporative cooling doesn’t mean evaporating AC condensation, it cools air by absorbing heat in water through evaporation.

I would say you mucked up the terms and made incorrect assumption.

I only see dehumidifier feature on the website. Where does it say it has a humidifier?

It never came with a hose, assuming mean you don't need draining, I have purchased previous machines which came with it. If you google self evaporative it never needs to be drained and will remove water it self.

    • When people tells others to google the info instead of providing themselves, I assume the quality of discussion goes down the drain (drain hose not supplied)

So I googled anyway, found this article which says

While self-evaporating portable ACs are able to remove accumulated condensation under normal operating conditions, when the humidity level in the room is high, or they are operated in dehumidify mode, some moisture will accumulate in the unit. In this case, these units have interior container or pan which can be drained, or the portable AC can be set up with a drain hose.

So as you suggested, you assumed wrong based on a missing supplied drain hose.

I still can’t find from google this TCL unit you have has a humidifier

      • There looks to be different TAC-12CPB models but am assuming you got the TAC-12CPB/MZ due to no included draining hose. Like others have mentioned there is no mention of the self evaporative or humidifier functions in any of the product documents.

  • I live in North Qld where the air is like soup the humidity is so high. I have two portable aircons and I have them draining into a large tradie bucket probably two to three times the size of a regular bucket which it pretty much fills overnight. I am guessing if you lived in the desert or somewhere where the heat is a dry heat you probably wouldn't have to drain but I doubt anything could stand up to the humidity we get up here

  • Well my unit had two holes to drain the water out unfortunately I have fly screen prevent me from using anything, the strange thing is a family member had a $1000 DeLong and never even once had to empty water, but this $550 TCL needs to, guest branding and quality does fall under from what you purchase.
