Check if your data has been leaked

Find out if your email, phone number or related personal information might have fallen into the wrong hands.

Just have some kind of weird feeling about my data and checked cybernews.com to see if my email data had been compromised and found it leaked by Tangerinetelecom.com.au. Then, I searched on Google and discovered the Tangerine Cyber Incident at https://www.tangerinetelecom.com.au/news/media-statement-tan…, which happened just a few weeks ago. Since I often receive junk emails, please check if your email or phone number has been compromised and take immediate action to change your email password if it has been leaked.

Approximately, 232,000 current or former Tangerine customer accounts are impacted dating from June 2019 to July 2023. All impacted customers have been notified by email on Wednesday 21 February 2024.

The following personal information was disclosed: full name, date of birth, mobile number, email address, postal address and Tangerine account number.

Please note that I am a former customer who stopped using Tangerine since May 2023. Despite this, my account email, phone number, and address are still being leaked. Surprisingly, I DID NOT receive any email from Tangerine notifying me about this data breach.

Former Tangerine member here as of 2021 also leaked yet also never notified by Tangerine.

In my opinion, to mitigate reputation loss and keep the incident low-key, they chose not to email former customers.

Instead, former customers were notified by the hackers when we received emails telling us that our most recent Tangerine direct debit hasn't gone through. The emails said to click a link to check our details.
It's 3 or 4 years since I left tangerine and I've moved house, so it was fairly easy to spot the scam.

It seems like many former customers are still unaware of this.

        • Me too. I reached out to Tangerine support asking why I got this DD email which looks like spam (but the breach was made public). Never got a response.
Very poor form from them, I believe some of my info leaked has never been breached, now I'd theft could happen any time now (maybe years in the future).

well not a deal. and it's just a ripoff of the original & the best, from local boy & security researcher Troy Hunt

and you're giving your email address to some strange website/company.

At Cybernews, which belongs to adtech lt, UAB, legal entity number 305084400, established at Vokiečių g. 26, LT-01130, Vilnius, Lithuania

    • Look like Cybernews could be owned by Tesonet/NordVPN.

      From reddit: here

A Nord spokesperson acknowledges that Tesonet has worked closely for years with Cybernews’s owner, Adtech LT UAB, and invested in a new umbrella company of the site in October.

This is the original and best. They also partner with CyberNSW.
Don’t use some other dodgy company when there is an established safe Australian site.

    • Mozilla Monitor also uses haveibeenpawned (the only alert on Tangerine was from Mozilla).

  • I had just closed my account in early Feb 2024 and not only my data was leaked but also the answers to 2 security questions,.and then don't tell you what those 2 questions were

    • Could you please explain how you managed to close your account? It appears that my Tangerine account hasn't been closed yet. Is there a way to expedite the closure process? I've reached out to support, and they assured me that my account would be closed due to the lack of activity. But unfortunately, nothing has happened yet, I can still login to my account.

      • I found the quickest way for Tangerine to close your account is if they owe you money.

gawd , that's crap. why was that available in plain text/human decryptable?

  • Previous customer but as you commented can still log in and access my account. Is this the also the situation with other Isp's or just Tangerine. ?

    • Just Tangerine for me. I've tried Mate, Aussie Broadband, Optus, and Vodafone before, but they closed my account after I stopped using their services.

Your personal data was found in the following data leaks: Tangerinetelecom.com.au

I highly recommend the 'dark web report ' in the google one app

The easiest way to know if your data has been pwned is to notice a sudden increase in email or phone spam.

When that happens (about once or twice a year, usually), go to haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email address to see what new sites are responsible.

  • I suppose optus or Harvey Norman will get the blame for this one too !

  • mine: Pwned in 24 data breaches and found 4 pastes

    • Pwned in 12 data breaches and found no pastes

I assume we will all have this one:

ShopBack: In September 2020, the cashback reward program ShopBack suffered a data breach. The incident exposed over 20 million unique email addresses along with names, phone numbers, country of residence and passwords stored as salted SHA-1 hashes. The data was provided to HIBP by dehashed.com.

Compromised data: Email addresses, Geographic locations, Names, Passwords, Phone numbers

  • It is showing all the websites where I never had an account. Is this even legit?
