Looking for Suggestions on Protein Powder

Hi all,

Currently on the lookout for a high-calorie protein powder to support me in my bulking phase.

Since I do not get many calories out of my current diet (which is something I am also working on), I am looking for something that packs over 1000 calories and is high in protein combined with a good balance of other nutrients.

I've looked at products like Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass which offers about 1250 calories and I was super impressed with it till I noticed that a 5kg bag only has about 15 servings which I thought didn't seem like the best value.

Also looked at vital strength mass which offers close to 750 calories when combined with milk.

Was wondering if you guys have had any positive experiences with a particular protein powder and could suggest me something that aligns well with my goals.

Thanks

I make my own. That way you can tailor to taste/sweetness/calories.

I buy whatever whey is cheap at the time (Aminoz, chemist warehouse’s INC brand) then separately buy dextrose (Mr vitamins sell 1kg for $5.95 i believe) and 3kg of maltodextrin from Aminoz ($30/3kg)

That way you can mix dextrose with maltodextrin for whatever sweetness you like (their GI portfolio is there about the same) and then scoop away into your shaker and top it off with a scoop of whey.

That's going to be the case with any "bulking powders" that you find. The calories need to come from somewhere, and with protein being 4calories per gram, carbs 4 calories per gram, and fat 9 calories per gram, you are going to always have these huge scoop sizes which means few serves per container.

If you are looking for a way to get a big amount of calories in easily, you are going to have to do something akin to Megametro's suggestion, which is to make your own. You could go his way of mixing protein with sugar, or just look for calorie dense additions.

Do you have a portable blender? It will help https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/ninja-blast-portable-blen…

https://thebigmansworld.com/weight-gainer-shakes/ - A quick google returned this. You might like some of these ideas.

High fat ingredients will be your friend. Oils, peanut butter, avocado, that kind of thing. Blend in oats and fruit. Whatever you can add to get those calories up if that's indeed your goal.

But yes, in terms of the ready to go bulk powders… I've never been a fan.
Let's say you want 1000 calories. We'll say 40g of that should be protein, that's 160 calories, leaving us with 840 calories surplus. Ok, so add in two tablespoons of pure fat, that's 270 calories extra (total of 430). We need 570 calories left. Add in 143g of oats or something. Now you have your 1000 calorie shake.

Or, buy a 15kg bag of the ready to go stuff, and end up with only 30 or so serves.

  • I've always enjoyed putting cheap rolled oats, peanut butter, banana and milk with my protein in a blender to the calories up.
