Have had my eye on this game for quite some time with the Monumental Edition usually retailing for $180-$230 and the base edition for about $100. Appears Gamerholic reduced their price and amazon has reacted. Has a rating of 8.4 on BGG and complexity rating of 3.68/5. From what I have seen online this is one of the best playing board games that can be compared Civilisation and Age of Empires.

FYI, your link goes to BGG, not Amazon, henco Congo's comment, and why the camel stuff doesn't show up.

Been waiting for a board game post to pop up as I wanted to just add a PSA (this isn't exactly a deal). I kinda gave up getting my family into board games (at least for now) so started looking for solo games and For Northwood! seems to pop up on a lot of top 10 lists. I've been scouring the internet looking for anyone that sold it but it's been quite difficult to get hold of. If you look at BGO, this is your only shot (there could be others but I haven't seen them).

For Northwood! is available for purchase at for $27.95 + Delivery at More Than Meeples

For Northwood! is currently rated 8.0 at BGG.

I have purchased a copy but it's sitting at the store waiting for me to pick it up so I can't comment about this particular release of the game. If you think I should post this separately I guess I can.

For Northwood! Is a solo hand management and precision trick-taking game. Your objective is to peacefully unify the kingdom of Northwood through conversations with their rulers. Over eight rounds, you must visit eight animal fiefs and engage their rulers in dialogue (tricks). Each ruler's suit represents the trump for that fief. Each ruler also requires you to win an exact number of tricks to join your alliance, so the game gets harder as your options dwindle.

You start with four allies, each with an ability that you can use once per visit. These abilities can make you draw, discard, or otherwise manipulate your hand to help you hit the target score. Once you've won a ruler over, you can pull them in to substitute temporarily for one of your allies, if you need a more specific set of abilities to tackle the harder fiefs.

With multiple difficulty levels, 24 rulers (12 used per game), and a 16-scenario challenge booklet, For Northwood! offers hours of gameplay with a new puzzle every time!

Winner of Best Overall Game and Jury Prize in the 2021 BGG 54-card contest.
Also winner of Best Art, Best Solo Game, and Best New Designer!

There is an official (and free!) print and play version of "For Northwood!": https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/220228/9-card-page-pnp-fi…

You can also play the game online for free: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2658141/how-play-northwood-…

      • Yeah, I wanted to get the card version of it. It's not that expensive and I suppose I should support the local too. I want to wherever I can but most of the time their prices are just so much more than Amazon.

  • Is there a best time of year to look for board games? Most of the advice I've come across online is uniquely American in that it revolves around daily flashsale trawling which is too much effort and usually these are also poor deals for us with shipping in the mix. The stuff that does show up for us is a search website that covers a handful of local stores/suppliers and is of limited use. Is it even worth looking at individual kickstarters when local stores buy into them and then presumably weather the shipping costs with more grace than an individual can?

Prices went crazy and old advice doesn't hold much anymore like lots of things now. I used to wait until nearing out of print/clearance to get stuff for super cheap online. Now the hotness games are $200 for some cardboard. Best prices I've seen get posted here.

Best advice I'd say it just don't get caught in the hype and find stuff you like and actually play it before getting new ones, people play games that are decades or hundreds/thousand years old, fun is fun. Don't pay rip off prices for something that will be old news in six months anyways when everyone moves onto new hype.

      • Darn, I was hoping there was something I'd overlooked. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm not into any of the hyped stuff at all so far. I far prefer Hansa Teutonica to the wingspans gloomhavens and other prettier modern darlings.

Honestly I dont think there is really a specific time, you could get lucky with prime and black friday sales etc but honestly even then quite often its hard to find anything that could be considered a 'deal'. Some of the online game stores will regularly do clearances which can have some good unique stuff amoungst a lot of junk. There might be some sites you can wishlist items to get notifications, i havent used it but i think price hipster you can. As Kommodore said you could wait/check to see if games have gone out of print or have a new version but if there is a new version it is could be the newer version will be better and might be worth the extra. I have noticed on the GC at least that Toymate stores have really good sales when they are clearing out stock for newer versions.

Facebook groups are best for good prices. Must have bought and sold dozens of games in the last three to five years and probably only two of them looked like they'd actually been played.

Bold and underline groups by the way, transactions are very smooth unlike the broader marketplace.

  • Could be "pricematching" The Nile. It's the cheapest there right now and this price kinda matches up with The Nile's price plus delivery. The Nile actually have quite a few games that are discounted heavily. Been waiting for Amazon to pricematch something else but that have been slow to follow.

    • I did notice the Nile had it for $128 but i think it was $8-$10 delivery. Hmm could be worth a look through their catalogue if they do flat rate shipping not that i need more games.

      • Yeah, I don't remember what shipping is but I don't think it's too bad. I trust them a lot more than the other mob which is an added bonus. I still would probably go with Amazon over The Nile though unless Amazon is a lot dearer or don't have it at all.

Frostpunk is a good price. May come down more I guess. Not sure if I'd ever play it, I haven't even played the PC version. I have my eye on The Binding of Isaac, Ultimate Collectors Edition or whatever it's called. I have a lot of Amazon credit that I want to use and would prefer to buy anything expensive from there. If Amazon doesn't come to play I may just have to get it from The Nile.

        • Ive ordered through a couple games stores. I think the last was empiregames and they were really good. Frostpunk looks good but that complexity rating leads me to think probably would struggle to play it let alone fine people to play.
Dang, that Binding of Issac is exy but looks interesting.
One game that caught my eye was 'Wiz-War' which has just gone back into print but the new version looks Horrid and the prior print is impossible to find. Seen a couple sites advertising the prior version but they all seemed dodgey after looking into them.

          • @Damannation: Yeah, I did notice that complexity rating. Don't think I've seen it that high before.

I loved the original Isaac game on PC and have played the remake a little. I do like Edmund McMillen's art style. I even have his Tapeworm game. I've never really splurged on a board game before. Binding pf Isaac would be nice as my first I think. Wow, I just looked him up just to check some info. Did not realise he is the developer behind Super Meat Boy. I should play that again.

            • @ozbs25: Yeah i definitely havent seen a complexity that high.
Yeah this is the most I have spent on a board game by far, generally wont spend over $80 and happy to wait till most games i want go on sale.
Was watching a guy play Super Meat Boy (wouldnt want to say that around the wrong people…) last week, looks like it gets pretty intense.

  • Good game, not sure if it's $130 good, but I guess that is becoming the going rate these days.

    • Ive had my eye on it the last 6 months and this is by far the cheapest for the monumental edition. Considering the base alone is $100 seems the better option. Though I agree, its a lot and by far the most i have paid for a game so hoping its worth it.
