Hi all.
Grateful for some tips.
Heading off to Italy in May and navigating phone options.
I have a legacy Telstra F&F post paid plan and this is my regular number. It's also the contact I have entered for most of my travel bookings.
I also have a 3 UK sim that I usually use when I travel.
I have found info on dealing with Telstra prepaid when travelling but not post.
Obviously I don't want to pay Telstra ridiculous roaming rates or do anything to trigger these.
In the past I have just replaced the Telstra SIM with 3 SIM and just checked occasionally for SMS received.
However these days with 2 factor verification it's a bit trickier. I can't think of too many occasions this will matter but I'd prefer to keep this option open. Also provider notifications.
I have a dual SIM phone so will keep both SIMS.
Any advice on settings (iPhone) or pitfalls (unexpected Telstra charges) would be appreciated as Telstra is pretty opaque.

Do you have voice of wifi activated?
If so, leave roaming off and just use data from a secondary data sim on your phone, or a local wifi network…
(note that voice of wifi 'may not' work on some wifi networks…)Thanks for the info. Looks like the end of my relationship with Telstra! Better spend those Telstra Plus points… In that case I may be better off porting my number to another provider before I leave.
yeah definitely.. the lowest plan is $62, which is ridiculous
A $52 increase ha ha
Use Wifi Calling Option it is free over Wifi and you will be able to use your phone as normal with no Roaming Charges
Thanks. How do I do this exactly? Switch off roaming and data. Retrieve SMS when I have wifi connection?
Open the Phone app .
Tap More. Settings.
Tap Calls.
Tap Wi-Fi calling. If you don't see this option, it's because your carrier doesn't support this feature. You can use Wi-Fi calling without a service on some carriers.Thanks. It's on already and roaming off so nothing to do.
Wifi Calling is the way to go. Just leave your sim as is and turn off roaming in settings. Then turn on wifi calling.
- If on an iPhone you'd go to
settings -> mobile -> select sim under "sims" menu -> turn on wifi calling and turn off roaming
When you're in italy get an eSim and use local data on that sim. You'd be able to make and receive phone calls through your telstra sim through wifi without issues.
If you have issues, just force the telstra sim to use a different carrier while overseas. It can be done under (settings -> mobile -> select telstra sim -> network selection -> select another network that automatic.

Thanks for all the help! I think I'll convert Telstra sim to eSIM and stick with my 3UK for data. With free wifi everywhere, and downloadable maps apps, there's no need for much data anyway.
Why would Telstra charge ridiculous roaming rates?
