ALDI Mobile Receiving SMS in Japan and Singapore No Roaming

Hi, does anyone have experience with Aldi mobile prepaid plan in Japan and Singapore without roaming activated - can you still receive Australian SMSs ? Good for account verification etc. Don't want to activate roaming. Thx.

Receiving SMS would require roaming to be enabled.

    • Why, don't ALDI support WiFi Calling?

If they do, you need to leave data roaming off…

      • Aldi may be different but wifi calling for Telstra can work regardless of whether roaming enable or not if you're overseas.

          as can most other networks.

I’ve been in Japan for a year with an Aldi SIM PAYG $10 and have been receiving SMSes for free. Although I’m pretty sure you have to enable roaming on the account, as I did that after a month in (YMMV since Aldi recommends you do it before leaving the country), and I haven’t been charged for anything (just make sure mobile data is not using your AU SIM, etc.)

I used it in conjunction with a local eSIM so I can have both services active.

    • Although I’m pretty sure you have to enable roaming on the account

I'm with Boost and had data roaming off and used a secondary data e-sim and calls and sms worked fine.

      • Looks like with Aldi mobile you have to enable it to get service. Once I turned roaming off from my Aldi account page, signal dropped and I couldn’t receive calls or SMS.

I had Wifi calling enabled too, so it seems to be like a general roaming setting for us.

  • amaysim as well, right? (receive banks code smses for free) do we need to do anything or asking amaysim for anything? enable roaming is by asking provider, or my toggling in mobile phone setting?

  • There’s roaming for data (turn it off) and roaming for calls/sms. Keep the latter activated

    • Keep the latter activated

Then you can't use Voice of wifi to make calls. It will try and use the local network you are connected to, instead of the data sim.

      • OP is asking about receiving sms

        • Which you can do without roaming…

That's VoLTE and would use expensive roaming data.
VoWifi uses Wifi hotspots for calls and works without roaming data.

But despite what should be a perfect solution, you can't use data from the second sim card to make data calls from the first.
Need to seek out wifi hotspots, or hotspot yourself from a second phone.

Just to clarify, you need to activate Roaming in the website (Aldi) and you will be able to receive SMS overseas. You don't need to activate data roaming (on the phone).

  • Thx all, I might just turn on Roaming in account but not turn on data roaming on phone.

  • Is there much delay in receiving SMS in Japan , fast enough for verification purposes?

    • They were pretty much instant for me. There are times where the message didn't come through, and a quick airplane mode on and off did the trick.
