Recommend Me a 4 Person Tent - Beginner / Noob

Hi everyone, I need an easy to set up 4 person tent. Would prefer to spend under 200 (I see there are cheapies for around 100ish). For camping once a year for a few nights at a time. Don't need anything fancy but it does need to be easy to set up.

Planning to go in summer only, no rain?
    Car camping or hiking?
    With kids or no kids?

Camping out the back of a car or hiking?

A 'person' is easily taken up by backpacks etc for hiking as example, but that stuff and other items can be put in the car with the other option.

Coleman Instant Up are pretty easy to put up. Used one for the first time last year, and got it fully up in about 15mins. I’d recommend the minimum 6 person tent for 4 people

2 adults 2 kids - summer camping, hoping no rain - car camping.

So youll need a 6-8 person tent to allow space for stuff. Look for something with a covered entry sp ylu can enter/exit the tent while lut of the rain.

      • Plus, ill add that quick setup is less relevant unless you are only doing single night stays. Easy setup is important and tends to align with quick(er) setup, but easy setup isnt always the quickest.

4 person tent means it fits 4 people lying side by side. Like someone else said, get a bigger rated tent to have some wiggle room for your things.

For your budget, something like this is fine https://www.kmart.com.au/product/6-person-instant-tent-42898702/

Although you don't necessarily need an instant up tent, even a regular tent you can figure out easily as a beginner.

Spend the money on a Coleman instant up 8p silver series and if you want really good quality, gold series if you can. I have a 4p gold for myself (I go camping more often) and 6p silver for the kids (wife joins me in the gold) when we family camp.

If you can’t afford the Coleman, this is on clearance and is a reasonable approximation of the Coleman

  • gumtree/marketplace are often a good place to look for camping gear, because people often:

    1. get really into it and upgrade their gear a lot
    2. realise they hate it and sell all their stuff

It's not a bad idea to pick up something second hand and find out which of these categories you're in yourself.
