Double Glazing Glass or Magnetite Replacement

Got similar quotes to replace the glass with Argon Gas infill and Low E Coating (don't really know what this means) or to just use Magnetite replacement glass over the top.
Which would be the better and preferred option. I don't know all that much about double glazing, other then I need this window better insulated.

Much appreciated.
Thanks.

  • Im going to assume this is for a house and you're replacing monolithic pre 1988 glass?

Why double glazing vs say, 6 or 7mm double laminate glass?

In an older home, unless every single gap, crack etc is made good, double glazing wont make huge differences in terms of energy efficiencies vs laminate.

This is a handy list of Uval comparisons

I've just put in 6.38mm comfort plus neutral which has a rating of 4.4.

Compared to the minimum double glazing, that's 4.5.

Guaranteed I did not pay double glazing prices!

    • "6 or 7mm double laminate glass?"
If I am not mistaken, the thinnest float glass one can get is 4mm. If you order a laminated sandwich of 2 x 4mm it is going to weigh quite a lot. Not sure if old frames will handle that weight…

We went with UPVC double glazing rather than Magnetite. Difference between single and double is night and day - so happy we did it. Much quieter, cheaper to heat and cool the house. Would definitely do it again. Definitely go double glazing.

  • Thanks for the information Ben and blitz. House is actually on the newer side, but has aluminum frames.
Who specializes in Laminated Glass, as I am no handy man?

    • Any reputable glazier should have this in the list of options. Definitely worth shopping around as quotes can vary wildly atm.

Also worth noting that the aluminium frames themselves are a conductor so you gain heat in summer and lose heat in winter. You’ll need to install a thermal break in the frame as well to get the most out of any double glazing.
