You now have 5X more free storage in Proton Drive!

Dear Proton community member,

We’re excited to announce our largest-ever free storage increase. You can now store five times more data in Proton Drive.

Keep up to 1 GB in your mailbox and up to 5 GB for your files and photos in Drive — more than many other leading cloud storage services.

Make Proton Drive your everyday cloud backup
With an extra 5 GB of storage, you can protect more files, documents, and memories with end-to-end encryption. This will help you take full advantage of some of our latest features:

Encrypted photo backup: Back up photos and videos directly from your phone to your secure cloud with our mobile apps.
Seamless syncing: Sync files and folders from your computer using our desktop apps and access them securely on any device.

To help you make the most of Proton Drive, we’re rewarding you with 3 GB of free additional storage when you complete three simple actions:

Add a file or folder
Create a shareable link
Protect your account with a recovery method
You have 30 days to complete the actions. If you do them all in under 30 days, you’ll automatically receive an additional 3 GB of free storage for a total of 5 GB, allowing you to protect even more files and folders with end-to-end encryption. You will receive an email in your Proton Mail inbox confirming your additional storage.

    Thanks

    Neat very easy signup process

  • Do they have an actual API for backup yet?

  • I clicked on the site and it does not mention anything about the 5 GB Proton Drive.

  • Back up photos and videos

    These days, 5 GB = 10x video (1.5 mins)

    • +1

yeah, this happened to me the other day when i recorded a short video. realised it was recording 4k 60fps, file size was 500mb. dropped it down to 1080p lol

      • 4k 30fps 1.5 mins 500mb, 60fps should be 1GB I think lol

        • Depends entirely on the bitrate of the codec

          • -1

@incipient: Same bitrate, double the frame means double the size, from what I understand.

            • @bcYield: The file size depends on the codec, but yes doubling the frame rate will double the file size.

Here is a review of Proton Mail if anyone is researching as I am.

    https://cybernews.com/secure-email-providers/protonmail-revi….

  • +1

Still only 500mb for mail and 2gb for drive in my account. Don't use it much for that reason.

    • Follow these steps to add 3GB of storage (2+3) Proton Drive

      • Apparently it’s time limited, so if you have an older account and never upsized the mailbox, you might need to contact their support.

  • +3

Proton drive for 5gb is pretty good. However the lack of a searchh function is driving me insane, apparently due to encryption

    • It appears on their roadmap but no ETA, unfortunately

    • +1

      Tuta has search

    • Ya it's frustrating.

    • +1

lack of search for drive or email??

      • +2

I don't use the mail. There's no search whatsoever for the drive.

On a desktop, I can use search everything but on mobile i dont have anything for this

        • -1

I found a niche way to get search on proton drive that requires you to set up proton drive sync/desktop app and leave the computer on for this to work.

          1) Set up Tailscale
          2) Use Search Everything Tool above - enable HTTP server.
          3) On a browser on the mobile device, type in the tailscale address into the address bar. whoila. you now are accessing search everything, that will include not just the proton drive but ALL files on your PC, via tailscale.

in fact… with this, why do I even need cloud storage… *contemplates what I just stumbled upon. Could easily just do this with a regular shared folder or FTP without search everything, just tailscale. I guess I can upload stuff and keep them in sync among multiple computers.

  • +3

I just created an account but I can only see 500M for mailbox and 2GB for drive

    • +1

      same here

    • +2

Follow these steps to add 3GB of storage (2+3) Proton Drive

      • +1

        Cheers, that worked a treat!

  • Is there a special process to get that extra? I just got 500 MB of mail storage and 2.00 GB drive

    • -1

      Got the catch:

Need to complete few steps to get Double your free storage to 1 GB ….
like auto forwarding from Gmail :(

      • you get 29 days to do so

      • +2

make a new gmail account? lol

        • but it's free and i'm too lazy to do anything apart from complain ;)

          • +3

@barg99: Point is .. it should have been mentioned in the original post

    • Yes, I followed this process and got the email notifying additional storage has been added.

  • +1

Confirmed 1gb mail and 5gb drive.

  • +3

Link from the previous deal to get the 1GB Storage

Here are four actions you can take to get the most out of your Proton Mail inbox:

Discover how our privacy features protect you
    Set up auto-forwarding from Gmail
Change account logins to your Proton address
Get the Proton Mail app on iOS or Android
Once you have taken these four actions, we will upgrade your storage to 1 GB. With 1 GB of storage space, you can keep even more of your emails and attachments secure and private. You have 15 days to complete all actions.

  • Convenient for skiff.com refugees

    • Unless you've got a custom domain

      • You can move to Zoho for something like $30/year

        • +1

Zoho is best for that price for a custom domain email address + Mailbox + Distribution group + Aliases.

I have been using it for about 3 years now for personal use.

I have set up to use my domain.
          - Created a distribution group.
          - added my main account as a member.
          - enabled moderation in the group.
          - use that group's email address to sign in to all other shopping or random websites where an account is needed.
          - my main email address remains free from the data grabbers.
          - and I can kill /change the group email anytime to stop receiving spam or marketing emails.

          • @myspacebarisbroken: Can you explain how the moderation stuff works? Do you essentially have a heap of random aliases that get directed to the one mailbox, and then you use ‘moderation’ to flag as spam or something? What’s the use case?

            • +1

@R1ngSt1nger: It quarantine emails that fails SPF/DMARC/DKIM checks, additionally there’s a functionality to block email/domain specific to the group.

I used to create random aliases earlier that routes all emails to one mailbox. But I found out that I can create multiple aliases for the group itself so I do that now.

I signed up for an airline recently and they send me promotional emails, however their emails always gets moderated for failed SPF checks, I get a notification in my inbox notifying of emails in moderation and then I can either allow or reject the email from there.

        • Yeah, but they aren't that privacy focused

          • @ldd-mn: It'll be interesting to see how privacy focussed Skiff actually were in the coming years.

Purelymail.com was mentioned as an alternative in the ArsTechnica Skiff article comments section. US$10/annum

            But, it's another startup.

            • +1

@ESEMCE: The weirdest part for me about Skiff was that they promised to have security audits done, yet never published them or even showed proof that they happened. Purelymail is probably fine, but it's run by a single person.

          • @ldd-mn: I know, I don't use it for financial or any important stuff either.

  • +2

I can confirm that if you are an existing proton mail member with 500mb and you haven't followed the usual upgrade steps (auto forward, install proton mail app etc) in the last one month you can still get the upgrade.

I opened the Proton storage app and uploaded a small file onto Proton cloud storage today. And received an email stating “we’ve upgraded your storage space to 5 GB” screenshot here. And I also noticed my mail storage changed from 500mb to 1 GB too.

And I also noticed my mail storage changed from 500mb to 1 GB too.

Huh thanks for that , I too dd the Proton Drive thing and thought welp, no Mail upgrade for me as I've been using Proton Mail for years.. but your posted prompted me to check and you're right, thanks :)

      • Awesome! No worries :)

  • Does this apply to exisiting email account holders ?

    • +1

Yes. I just provided the detailed steps that I followed above. Received an email that confirms they upgraded my storage. Ive provided a screenshot as well.

      • Thank you for the details provided above. Will follow the same

        • Perfect.

      • Is your account less or more than 30 days old?

        • +1

If the question was for me, my account was more than 30 days old. Still I got the upgraded storage today following the steps I performed as stated above.

    I love ProtonMail 😍

    • Why? Is it much better than Outlook or Gmail?

  • +2

Proton has automatically upped my drive to 5gb of my existing account without needing me to do anything.

    • +1

      Same here.
Email notification was waiting in my inbox without me doing anything.
      Thank you Proton!

      • same here too, nothing required for existing users

  • How does 15gb google drive using cryptomator compare against this?

    • Cryptomator isn't free on mobile devices, where this is. Google is also tracking metadata (when/where you connect, even if the content is encrypted) whereas Proton doesn't.

  • Than you I did this but still on 2gb I really like Pronto but 2gb just not enough to start using it 5gb still not much to make it a ongoing solution but thank you

Too many services, some of us only care about a VPN and would prefer it cheaper.

    • Well, they literally offer VPN free.
That's in addition to offering VPN only plans, with multiple tiers at that, so pay only for what you need.

      • I know but too far from Sydney so only useful for browsing the Web…

        • I'm guessing you're taking about their Free tier and agree it's not practical as a daily.

After reading my reply that they offer a VPN only plan, with multiple tiers within it, I'm curious, did it addresses your comment?

Proton are worth supporting financially, just my opinion.

    Introducing the Proton Foundation
Since our start as a company created by scientists who met at CERN 10 years ago, Proton has never been led by people who are driven by the maximization of profit. Whether it’s through the millions of dollars of grants that Proton has contributed toward defending freedom online, or the fact that we have never raised prices on existing users, as an organization we have always put people ahead of profits.

In order to defend Proton’s values far into the future, we’re happy to announce the creation of the nonprofit Proton Foundation, which is now Proton’s primary shareholder. The foundation, with its legally binding statutes, ensures Proton will remain independent, self-sufficient, and community-first in perpetuity, and it commits the financial success of Proton to the public good. You can learn more at the foundation website or in the announcement blog post.

Billions of people use document editors like Google Docs and Microsoft 365 that can scan your data and are not secured with end-to-end encryption. Now you have a free alternative thanks to Docs in Proton Drive.

With Docs, every keystroke is encrypted, so your work stays safe from data breaches, online surveillance, and can never be fed into AI models. Now you can collaborate on contracts, notes, creative writing, and more, knowing your drafts and comments are private. Take back control of your documents — try Docs in Proton Drive today.

We are making Proton VPN free in 20 countries with a history of censorship or political interference that have elections this year. The hope is that with online freedom and privacy protected, democracy can thrive. As a result, Proton VPN became the most downloaded app in Venezuela in recent weeks, and we hope to continue having this outsized impact around the world in places where democracy is most under threat. Thanks to your support, initiatives like this are possible, and they are changing the world.

Hackers have already stolen over 1 billion records so far this year in attacks on healthcare providers, ISPs, and more. Find out if you’ve been affected with Dark Web Monitoring for credential leaks, available in all paid Proton plans.

In April, the US government extended and dramatically expanded its warrantless surveillance program. This is just one part of an array of tools Americans use to spy on civilians and reinforces why Proton is based in Switzerland.

Proton Mail has a new Android app. In response to your feedback, we rebuilt it from the ground up to improve performance, add a new conversation view, and many other under-the-hood enhancements. Get the app.

We’ve also launched a new writing assistant, currently available to Visionary and business customers, called Scribe. It saves you time writing and proofreading emails, and it can run locally on your device, making it one of the first privacy-first writing assistants. Learn more.

In April, we announced that Standard Notes, an end-to-end encrypted note-taking app, is joining the Proton family. Like Proton, Standard Notes is open source and community-driven, making it a perfect fit for our mission. Get Standard Notes.

Proton VPN is now the world’s largest and fastest VPN network after our recent expansion to over 6,500 servers in 112 countries. We have also made enhancements to all of the Proton VPN client apps in response to community feedback — including a redesign of the Android app, more feature parity for Linux, Stealth for Windows, and making the browser extension free for all users. (Has anyone tried their VPN in Aus? How is it for speed?)

In the last 50 years, society has transitioned from cash payments to digital payments that big banks and Big Tech can monitor, which has eroded our privacy. These trends have handed immense power to central institutions and intermediaries whose interests are not aligned with the individuals they serve. Last month, we launched Proton Wallet, a safer way to hold Bitcoin, in early access in an effort to reverse this trend.

    • Agreed. Recently I’ve been moving away from free data-harvesting services and into paid privacy-focused services like Proton for emails and basic storage, and Ente for 2FA and photos. I recommend the free tier of Standard Notes for syncing notes between devices. I’ve been with them since before Proton acquired them.

      • I've been using the Google authenticator…bad idea?

        • -1

2FA/MFA codes are probably not really a privacy issue so I don't think its a terrible idea like using some of their other services is.

Nevertheless using an open source alternative like Aegis, or Ente mentioned above, is definitely a better idea.

The best idea if you want to really secure your accounts and make them phish-proof, and are willing to spend a little cash to do so, is to use hardware tokens such as Yubikey's + Yubico authenticator. You'll need to buy 2 keys, one as a backup in case you lose the primary. Or with OnlyKey you can make an encrypted backup so you only need one.

        • +1

Considering I have many other choices now, I prefer not having my data harvested & sold on so I don't use Google Auth.
Google openly tracks, logs and sells a slew of metadata it harvests from your auths.
