Laptop Recommendations for Work - Budget ~ $1-1.5k

Hi guys. I’m looking for a basic work laptop for business. It will be mostly used for document processing and web browsing.

The requirements are:

  1. Screen size 15-18 inch
  2. Not too heavy: need to carry to work and back everyday.
  3. Decent battery life: 5-8hrs minimum

Preferably to be able to get from a local store in Brisbane.

Thank you all for helping out!

  • Screen size 15-18 inch
    Not too heavy: need

    Pick one

Picking one is for kids. I want it all.

  • New or pre-owned? Windows or Mac? You may need to go smaller display to get light weight.

    • Windows. New prefered. I don't need it to be super light, just not too heavy to carry it around.

just go with a used Dell Xps, or Lenovo yoga line ups. They are best IMO for any possible upgrades, specs, design & comfort, price, repairability, (and not beign a dodgy company that sells junk). You can also try the lenovo miix lineup (ones that come with a sim card slot for easy internet access on the go). Lenovo might be more suitable if you need touch, convertable option otherwise if dont need touch go with dell instead.

Microsoft surface laptops are okay too (but I personally would avoid them due to horrendous repairability and upgradability)

Asus ones (i'd also avoid just from past bad experiences)

    • Dell xps is a bit out of my range i think, how is the Inspiron ones?
btw where do i search for used ones?

btw where do i search for used ones?

FB marketplace and eBay, if you want a bit future proof get 16GB RAM (ssd's are usually upgradable tho). if you can wait, then wait for a deal.

Dell xps is a bit out of my range i think, how is the Inspiron ones?

Upto you but I wouldn't (they are likely to have lower battery IMO), may be see lenovo range even like ideapad is good too (or ideapad yoga)

are you okay with 8 GB ram ?? if so this could be a very good one - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186286654135

screen is 13 inch tho, but way way below your budget too only AU $346.8 with eBay plus

        • the price is so tempting… but i really need a bigger screen, its so hard looking at tiny screens…

        • what do u think about the thinkpads? i found this one for just over 1k.

@Zanosaur: You gonna have 3-6 hrs or less of battery life. And you probably gonna need to carry charger or a powerbank with u most times.

Very good upgradability wise and specs are decent too other than display which is 1080p only ( but probably more than good enough for your use ??).

If u gonna buy directly from Lenovo then look for cashback upsized or some student discount

Have a look at this too https://www.centrecom.com.au/lg-gram-17-wqxga-i5-16gb-ram-51…

1 TB ssd (or 512 GB idk their listing is weird, regardless dual m.2 ssd slot) 16 gb ram more than full hd display and very light weight 80wh battery (easily 6-9 hrs + for everyday use in actual reality unlike a lot of others that just boast ridiculous battery lifes like Microsoft)

Just be careful repair parts might be more difficult to source than dell or lenovo (still way way better than like Microsoft or some Xiaomi one)

  • Lenovo ideapad pros are nice.

    • Thinkpads are much better built.

    • 5k+ aud… what u on about?

        Wait for a sale ?

        It looks good though…

        It has Autostereoscopic 3D technology.

    $1 - 1.5k

The minimum cost of $1 shows dignity,

up to $1500 shows desire and desperation.

  • Gonna hijack this thread too if that's ok op. Looking for a work laptop for around same budget, mostly going to be using a lot of anydesk and browsing. Good screen is a bonus for all occasional movie during travel.
