Amaysim 15% off Prepaid Mobile Broadband 10GB Data Pack - $84.91

380
SAVEMBB10

Amaysim is currently running a 3 day promotion on their 10GB data pre-paid mobile broadband. 15% off for New Customers only, i.e. $84.91 for 10GB with 365 day expiry. Those are probably not for the high-end users but casual users that spreadout usage over a year time. It also comes with something like $40 of call credit when I activated mine last year. I had one for my 3G tablet.

  • From memory Amaysim use Optus Network?

    Should also note that the simcard is free and you can transfer or request a new number if required :)

  • Usage is rounded at 1 MB? I wonder over what period that is counted? Because if you are checking your email every 15 minutes and each time is 1 MB then that would add up quickly.

    Found it;
    https://amaysim-media.s3.amazonaws.com/legal/amaysim-Price-T…

    2.3. Calculation of Charges for Mobile Data

    2.3.1. Charges for the use of Mobile Data are based upon 1 MB increments per session. Sessions that make up part of 1 MB will be rounded up to the next full 1 MB increment. The number of MB used will then be multiplied with the charge as set out in the Price Table below.

2.3.2. A data session is a data transaction between your mobile handset and an Internet destination such as a website or the database for a smartphone application. Your handset controls when a session starts and when it ends. amaysim cannot influence this. For example, depending on how your handset operates, browsing a series of webpages may be a single session, or a session may start and end each time when your smartphone is updating your email or you activate a smartphone application.

    Second edit;
    Someone else has already queried this exact question;
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2753624?start=0&tstart=…

    The most likely answer was;
    On older phones, even with 3G there was never the constant use of a data connection. My old phones would literally warn me that they were going to initiate a WAP connection. With the iPhone though it assumes it can make use of cellular data whenever it wants hence the massive international data bills in the first few months of the iPhone and then the options to turn it off when you're roaming.

    rufus001, I don't have an answer for you but I would suspect that the iPhone is initiating and tearing down data connections on a fairly regular basis rather than keeping a single connection active. If they are rounding up to 1MB I'd think you'd go through your allowance pretty quickly on it if you use the iPhone as it was meant to be used. Email for example - mine polls a single account once every 15 minutes and if that counts as a single session that's 96MB a day according to that document.

    • When I was playing around with the trial unlimited last year I only clocked up a few hundred MB for the month. I left my Android smartphone's mobile data on and I believe it only starts a new session if you've dropped the connection, e.g. going through a train tunnel. So in my case it didn't keep initiating new connections all the time. I don't know how the iPhone behaves though.

  • Hey Scott, do you have any discount code for PAYG sim?

    • +1

      Sorry no. I can't remember them having discount on PAYG before either.

      • thanks, just though i ask if you're on their vip list :)

  • would this be good for non tech parental's ipads? it is a bit hard to judge how much they use.. if anyone else has the same situation please comment on what they do.

    • It's adequate for normal smartphone users, but I'd hesitate to recommend it for pads. Those devices will tempt people to watch videos which will eat up bandwidth.

  • Thought amaysim was Telstra? There te quite a few company's using Telstra, if amaysim is Telstra go for it!

    • +1

      Optus.

    • "Powered by the Optus 3G network". I got excited there for a moment DEvok

  • will that be 4g compatible ?

  • Anybody successfully used amaysim on a Asus Transformer? Keen to get one but after not being able to get Virgin broadband working on my tablet not confident amaysim will either.

    Im not saying this is a bad deal. Lets get that out there. Especially for lower use!!
    But i know i use my mobile data alot more.
    10gig means only 833MB per month. Less so because of 1Mb increments.

    If you are one to use a bit more, other plans come in cheaper; and include calls.

    Using amysim (theoretically $7.05p/m) has 833MB per month (ROUNDED UP PER MB)
    $84.91/10gig is $8.41 per gig

    Using Live Connected $11.99p/m has 1500MB per month (ROUNDED UP PER kB) + $500 calls (which I dont even really use)

    $143.88/18gig (12x1.5) is $7.99 per gig

    tl;dr
    If you plan to use more than 833MB a month/10gig a year then
    $4.94 per month more gets you 1500MB, in KB increments and the ability to make calls.

    • thanks, I didn't know about Live Connected before :)

      The one year plans are more about flexability than value for money.

      You can't really compare something that lasts 365 days as opposed to one that lasts 30.

      Think about Vodafone's different prepaid phone offers. The 365 day plan gets you jack all as opposed to like some mega cap they have that lasts for 30 days lol.

      The consumers they target are in different categories.

      If someone was to go on both of these, but end up using 4 gigs in one month, but 50 MB in other months, this will be better than live connected.

      Yeah, with the 10 gig, you're paying for more than just the data, you're paying for the fact that it can last a whole year as well. :)

      • Indeed. It's not really replacing your regular phone plan, but more for the flexibility.

        I use bugger all on my tablet — except when I go out travelling/on holidays (which only happens a few times a year). My parents also use those year long prepaid MBB as they are only in Australia 3-4 months in a year. A regular monthly plan just does not make sense.

    • Go over your 1500MB, and it is 45 cent a meg……

    • +1

      This, but with Vaya which is $11/month
      Resulting in $7.33/gb
      Yayyyy for hair splitting :)

  • I tried amaysim months ago, speed wise isn't that good. I live approximately 25 km away from Sydney cbd and on average I was getting 3-6mb/sec, download. Where as Telstra 6-16mb/sec.

    No this wouldn't work on 4G or LTE.

  • Just upgraded my Nokia 6220 on Just Mobile $15 prepaid plan to an iPhone 4 on a $29 Woolworths Mobile prepaid. It looks like I'm on course to average 860MB/half-quarter(10.3GB/year) and sweet firetr#ck all of phone/sms usage (since I predominantly use the wifi - which I adorably pronounce 'wiffy'). So anyhoo… this $84.91 Amaysim prepaid deal has my attention. What do you wise long-time smartphoners reckon?

  • Would one trade in his automotive that costs 4.075[L] per 1000 MBs
    for one which consumes '8.410[]' per 1000 MBs.

    Not really a hard solution….

    meh. I might get 3 X $26.10 recharges adding to 1 existing $3.20 recharge (acknowledging a promised $20 Gift Card funds) for a Net total balance $81.5/20GB. I can safely alternate this program, interspersed with other offers as these are published OZB while fully appreciating not all operate tablets to wonderfully complement their limited inch-size 'telecoms' :)

    But rather agreeing with what the original poster sagely advised— …probably not for the high-end users but casual users that spreadout usage over a year time.

  • There might still be some 8GB over 180days $39 Dodo SIM-only starter packs available at some DSEs. It uses the Optus network. http://dicksmith.com.au/product/E6949/dodo-mobile-wireless-b…
