Please Give Your General Booking Flight Tips

Hey guys,

I am going to Bali in July though I am currently shopping around for a decent deal and noticed it's quite frustrating looking at the flight cost jump every 10 minutes.

What is annoying me is that I found a return flight for around $620 on skyscanner yesterday but today can't find anything under $750, but I will wait during the weekdays cause apparently it's slightly cheaper then?

Furthermore, I went into incognito chrome and the flights were around $50 cheaper!

Google flights are ok but seems the incognito trick didn't really work as prices were roughly the same.

Can any share any general tips when searching for deals? Or am I utilizing the best method? Or should I just continue doing what I am doing and just book when I feel the price and flight time is right?

Don't look until you're ready to book. Stop looking after you've booked.

  • Recent Virgin airline deal (expired) was really good for Bali, ifs around $500 return. Thus watched for any deals.

Some says that you should only search in incognito, then buy it in normal search.

  • The sweet spot for Bali (DPS) is flying Batik Air https://www.malindoair.com/au/

My biggest advice is do research on the cheap deals that are heavily advertised. My personal example is Hamilton Island had some great flight prices and we instabooked when they came out - turns out it was in the middle of HI Race Week, which means although you can get flights there in the middle of the week, every single accommodation option and restaurant is booked flat out. There are other examples like Japans "Golden week" where most of everything closes down as a result of multiple public holidays in quick succession, or Karneval in Germany which just recently passed(I visited family but literally every tourist spot was either closed or very whittled down as a result, even Koln cathedral was half closed.

So yeah just make sure that the cheap prices aren't because its during a bad season or there is an event that would completely change the city to what you were expecting. Basically research the dates before you add to cart lol

I said this before & will repeat it.
The best time to book is the very first time you start looking.

Having been travelling internationally for 40 years, and the last 15-20 years or so booking over the internet I have never, never, never found a cheaper price than when I first start looking. A few hours, days etc later the price will either be the same or higher. I recall a few times I had some erroneous idea that prices might come down in a few days or a week later (must've gotten some information to make me believe that). Jumped online and prices for same flight had almost doubled. Constantly monitored for a few days and was resigned to the fact I missed out.

I've tried all the tricks - clearing cache, different browser, different device.

From what I understand, airlines release blocks of seats with cheaper, cheap, bit more, more and so on and as each block gets taken then prices move up to the next block.

You MIGHT luck upon a sale but I never have.

  • if you're willing to gamble, try wait till May for Jetstar's birthday sale.

if you're willing to gamble, fly Jetstar. lol

      • literally shaking rn so excited to gamble

  • If flying during or close to school holidays buy as soon as possible.

If flying during school term, wait for a Jetstar sale.

  • If you see a price that you think is good - book it. You never know how long tickets will hang around at that price for.

Occasionally you might miss a sale, but more often than not prices will go up the longer you wait.

I say this as a person who has been left annoyed at themselves multiple times for not booking flights in the hope of holding out for a better deal, only to end up paying more than I would have or missing out completely instead :)

  • Won't you look at that? Jetstar has just dropped a sale to Bali for you. $199 one way.
