Cost Savings Advice and Top Tips

Is there a sticky / pinned or existing topic that covers the top things to do in saving money from everyday purchases?

I have found the pinned topic of comparison sites which is really good, looking for something complimentary that lists the top 10 /20/30 things you could do to reduce your costs without offering any financial advice.

Reviewing deals and posts on here its apparent there is an advanced knowledge of gift card purchases, stacking and other ways to reduce the effective cost of a purchase.

Appreciate everyone situation is somewhat unique to them and their circumstances.

I'm working through the main ones - Mortgage rate analysis, Insurance quotes and utilities supplier comparisons.
Car - i'll be looking to do an EV via novated lease in 2H24 which is beneficial to us.

Keen to get into the next set down i.e.

  • Groceries - is there a better source of gift cards. I currently get 4% through employer Benefits app for Coles and Woolies. How can i stack anything else on top of this?
  • Public Transport - I've heard i can top up my card at Woolies using vouchers, which is 4% off there as well. Does this work or any other savings options?
  • Mobile plans - planning to come off Telstra when contract finishes in June and then re-sign when JB HiFi offer there big gift card incentives.

We have cut out under utilised subscriptions and services.

To personalise it a bit - we are a family with 2 kids under 5 both adults around 40.

Thanks
Chris

top things to do in saving money from everyday purchases?

    Get somebody else to pay.

  • How can i stack anything else on top of this?

10% off twice a month on your Woolies shop…

  • Gday.

we normally ALDI shop with left over at woolies.
2x mobile services with woolies mobile so we get 10% discount twice a month.

buy toys second hand, as much as possible, top ups from aliexpress - still, those lego bits add up !

aside from that, we dont do much savings - because regular expenses are groceries, housing, and childcare.

Unless we start eating plain food, which i'm ok - but the family members won't like that, then there isnt much saving.

    Car service, local mechanic
    Insurance: shop around.
Internet: switch every 6 months for cheaper rates
    Kill netflix, do amazon only

not many savings to be made unfortunately, without cutting off childcare; or reducing quality / quantity of meals.
we're eating into our savings - that were intended for a home renovation, but idk what will happen.
We're in hope that we'll make it over this rough patch until the kids start school and then we save $800 a week.

    • buy toys second hand,

Even better, join a toy library if possible

Many toy libraries are not free.

        • Read my comment again, you numpty. I never said it was free.

            No. Once is enough.

      • my local council library doesnt do one. so we gave up.
once toys are done with us they get donated to childcare. the childcare people are lovely people.

        • My local toy library is separate from the regular book library and a paid membership but very cost effective.

  • vpn region change netflix, youtube and adobe suite has saved me a lot. spotify would be good too but just seem to keep seem to sign up with vpn successfully.
sure there are apk workaround for android and ad blockers but i just cbf for the asking price for vpn subs.

i share the costs of disney and apple one subs with a few other members, makes it very reasonable (especially the apple one sub)

As someone who recently moved to NSW, my top tip to save money is to move out of NSW.

i spend 15 mins googling where are the best prices for each item im looking to buy before making my trip to ColesWorth. Good thing i live in a suburb where both are not too far from each other.

Other tip is buy your vegetables from Asian groceries. Way cheaper there.

  • I would be very cautious about novated leasing an EV. If you pay the balloon payment you're stuck with a car that needs battery replacement. 5 year old petrol Rav4 with regular service will go for a very long time, it'll be in the $20k zone, & again avoid the old battery (hybid).
If you have solar, you charge the EV at home during the day and it's mainly city driving, yes maybe consider it.

Before you make any purchase check your budget and it will curb your appetite for exuberate expense.

Always go for the best value never buy rubbish never buy the greatest or you'll lose. The only exception to the rule is if the greatest is commercial grade and built to last.

Do the research and wait for the item to come on sale or used listing. - Set an email notification.

An emergency fund is the best insurance policy.
