May seem expensive at first, but it has over 30 movies across 30 discs (including both the cinematic and television versions of Scenes From a Marriage and Fanny and Alexander) which makes the relative value pretty decent.

Is one of the rare region-free Criterion releases also.

Includes heavy hitters such as Persona, Autumn Sonata and The Seventh Seal as well as loads of deep cuts and special features.

Not quite the complete works of Bergman, but pretty darn extensive.

I got this for Christmas and have watched 5 films so far (Persona, Autumn Sonata, Winter Light, The Virgin Spring and Cries and Whispers). Each has been beautifully presented from restorations done in 2017.

Also comes in a beautifully presented 'book' and has an actual book included full of essays and various writings.

Basically, good shit!

May have been slightly cheaper around black Friday last year (~$286), but seems to hang around ~$500 as of late

I've only seen Persona, good (profanity) movie

If you're unsure about the collection, maybe find a way to seek out Autumn Sonata if Bergman is of interest to you. Not quite as 'artsy' as Persona, but boy, does it leave you feeling its tremendous effect afterwards

  • Bergman is great, once you get up to Summer Interlude in his filmography the bangers start hitting. I stopped collecting CC / blu-rays but definitely recommendable.

Criterion are the best dvd/bluray producing company ever, although their reputation took a bit of a hit when about a dozen or so releases pressed at a certain bluray plant developed bronzing & eventually became unplayable. Used to collect their dvds back in the day. For a brief period they started producing dual format dvd/bluray releases which were superb. Others like BFI were doing the same, so I guess for a while there Criterion felt they had to match their competitors. BFI outdid Criterion in one respect, their releases included SDH for everything, something I've never seen any other company do.

Back in the day, Criterions were available from various independent online retailers at reasonable prices. Sometimes B&N used to have half price sales. These outlets have mostly long gone, or been incorporated into other companies. All that's left is Amazon & lately prices are generally high.

Bergman was a quality film-maker, but his ouevre thematically left much to be desired, & let's say was definitely of a certain persuasion. He had his demons.

Note for fussy collectors; this boxset, like most of their larger ones, houses the blurays in pockets/slots within the cardboard sleeves. This can result in difficulty removing & inserting the discs & scratches.

I particularly like the way they support lesser-known auteurs. The kind of “real” directors who live and breathe cinema, and who you’re unlikely to find showcased elsewhere.

      For example:

    • Sometimes B&N used to have half price sales. T

B&N still do a half off sale every year, as does the Criterion website. Otherwise they are available on Amazon discounted from RRP, as well as sites like Deep Discount, WOWHD etc

      • Last time I checked (years ago), BN shipping had increased significantly. DD was sold years ago, & their prices increased. It was good time for buying CC's for a while though!

        • If you like Criterion, should check out Radiance films - they’ve put out some wonderful releases in their first year.

          • @Randolph Duke: Thanks, but my movie buying days are over. Radiance looks ok, but nothing special. There's been a load of boutique labels over the years that have come & gone. I wouldn't be surprised if the team there have had prior experience with other labels, Second Run, Eureka/MoC, Arrow etc.

I'm a fussy little pussycat and I absolutely hate CDs, DVDs or Blu-rays being housed in those stupid cardboard sleeve slots. It promotes scratches and tears the cardboard no matter how careful you are taking them out or popping them back in.

      • +1

Yeah, I have to agree. I don't mind discs having their own paper/cardboard sleeves, like a lot of the large classical music box sets, but Criterion made a bad price conscious decision for those big sets.

    • "Note for fussy collectors; this boxset, like most of their larger ones, houses the blurays in pockets/slots within the cardboard sleeves."

It's not just fussy collectors. I rip all my 'discs and without the slightest shadow of a doubt, disks that are housed in cardboard sleeves cause the most trouble regardless of origin. Since I have more Criterion Collection box sets I notice it more with them eg the Wong Kar-Wai boxset had a failure rate of 29% although I didn't have any disks fail to read from the 'Bergman box set.

      • I always liked their older double disk packaging, the really thick plastic ones with dual side openings & with the big centre spindles. I also liked their Eclipse set packaging with the slimline cases, although the covers holding the discs were pretty thin.

They pay you to watch them?

I’m a boomer and well aware of Bergman's movies although I have never seen one and have no intention to do so.

References and platitudes to his films were common in newspapers, TV and movies in his heyday often in a manner to show or mock elitism.

In any case, Bergman certainly made his mark on cinema.

This seems like a great collection, is there one for Clint Eastwood or Charles Branson? 😀

is there one for Clint Eastwood

It sounds as though you've been easily swayed by anti-intellectualism rhetoric. Maybe you ought to watch one and decide for yourself?

I mean, I don't watch comic book movies, but that's only because I don't have the time

      • How do you identify a Bergman movie fan or vegan.

        They will tell you.

        • +1

          yeah good one mate

  • I have trouble finding a good region-free blu-ray driver since they always come and go all the time (and you never know how good they actually are). Granted I could just use a PS5 but I don’t have one either. Is there even an established way to watch multi region blu rays?
