Windows 8 - can I use upgrade code to upgrade Win7 on MacBook instead?

I bought an HP laptop last month with Win7 and registered for upgrade. Received the code from Microsoft to upgrade to Win8.
Can I pay $14.99 and upgrade the win7 from my MacBook Pro instead. Don't want to upgrade HP to win7.

    I'm sure it would work, but it would be in breach of the license agreement.

    Actually the official website for the $14.99 offer states that you are allowed to use the upgrade on a different machine.

    "While the offer will be limited to eligible customers who purchase a qualified PC, the upgrade may be installed on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying operating system (see Windows 8 System Requirements)."
