Asus TF201 or Samsung Tab 2?

one is quad core and the other is dual core, one is minimum 32G and the other is 16G. does these matter? can the difference in CPU be felt when it's only used for general surfing (including watching online videos) and watching video clips/files ?

thanks

  • What about galaxy note 10.1? Or tf300t?
    Tf201 has wifi and gps problems so you might want to stay away from that, tab 2 is dual core and seems like a low end tablet in my opinion.. I have a TF300T and it's great however I enjoy the finish of the ipad and most likely trade mine for it

  • There's big difference between Tegra 2 and Tegra 3, so yes, the performance does matter. With my Tegra 2 tablet (Acer Iconia A500), I can't even play some YouTube HD videos smoothly. 1080p never works.

  • ASUS OFC!!

  • prices for the note and Tf300 are out of my range; i'm really just looking for a table to do general surfing and watching videos on planes/cars but yes if it cannot play HD videos off youtube it will be a worry, in saying that, i don't often watch videos in HD but who knows, all videos might be in HD in future.

    • +1

      I thought TF201s were generally more expensive than TF300s, at least they were when I bought my TF300. I couldn't be happier with my TF300, it was a great buy for under $500 including dock!

  • I wouldn't recommend the Tab 2.0 - it has outdated hardware (even when it was released), a fairly laggy UI (from what I've seen) and poor build quality (IMO). The TF201 or even the TF300 feel much more premium and are more aesthetically pleasing, I think, despite the latter being plastic.

    You should look into the new Nexus 10, if that's not out of your price range, or a Nexus 7 if you don't mind going 7"

  • Jonaseymour: indeed a great buy on your TF300. why are they generally cheaper than TF201?

    ProspectiveDarkness : didn't realise the Nexus comes in 10". will check out the prices but are the specs much better than better than the Asus IYO ?

      Nexus 10 - Google Play Store

      The Nexus 10 was just announced a week or so ago, and won't start shipping until the 13th of November.
      The specs are pretty impressive:
      * 2560 x 1600 resolution
      * 2GB RAM
      * 1.7GHz Dual Core A15 processor (model: Exynos 5250)

      The TF201 has:
      * 1280 x 800 resolution
      * 1GB RAM
      * 1.4GHz Dual Core A9 Processor (Tegra 3)

      I've never used a TF201 personally (though I read most device reviews that cross Engadget or The Verge), but the specs on the N10 are better - though the plastic casing won't give as premium a feel as the TF201 (most likely). The Nexus 10 should also receive timely and guaranteed updates from Google, though Asus has been the best in delivering non-stock updates of all the OEM's.
      Keep in mind also that the TF201 has the WiFi and GPS issues, from the aforementioned aluminium casing.

      Overall, the specs are better on the N10, in my opinion, but since I've used neither tablet, I can't comment on which is the better device. (Though I lean towards the Nexus, personally)

      Nexus 10 Review

      • Nexus 10 is wifi only though?

        • I'm fairly sure the TF201 is WiFi only too, and even if it did have 3G, I highly doubt the connection would be great, given the existing WiFi and GPS issues.
          Besides, the OP didn't mention 3G as a requirement, and the N10 may receive a 3G update in the future.

        • Asus is WiFi only too.

        • Fair enough. I wasn't sure if the OP was looking for wifi only or if he/she wanted 3G as well.
          I mainly use my tablet when Im out of the house, so I need the 3G for my wireless data account.

    • I believe the tf201 has a nicer build quality with the aluminium finish (which adds wifi and gps issues…) and also a brighter screen I believe… might be some more differences though.

      I personally love the storage capacity of the TF300 32GB + 2 microSD lots and a usb slot (with dock) so for me the transformer was an clear winner, but if storage is not a huge issue for you, I'd go the nexus 10. can't really beat that value…

      • True, if productivity is a necessity, the Transformer probably wins out by a long shot, due to the enhanced connectivity and battery life given by the dock.

        But for pure consumption, I would probably say to go with the N10, where a combination of OTG & cloud storage, or one of these can be used to overcome the limited storage. (The Nexus 10 has no expendable storage ports, for the otherwise uninformed)

  • Buy the Nextus 10 or Asus. Samsung take forever to update their software….

    I've owned Apple, Acer, Asus, Motorola, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony tablets in the past two years.

    For WiFi only devices, I'm going to stick with Nexus for now. Apart from Asus, the rest take forever to update their Android revisions.
